Children 1st Derby Road Nursery School is situated within walking distance of Long Eaton town centre. It is easily accessible from the train station and bus routes. The nursery has been refurbished throughout to offer spacious and bright learning areas for babies, toddlers, pre-school children and for those in 'out of school' club aged up to twelve years.

The nursery has split the age-appropriate rooms over two levels and are uniquely designed to stimulate and inspire young children’s minds.

A team of dedicated staff ensure the children’s needs are nurtured in a home-from-home environment. Each staff member believes in strong parent partnerships in order to deliver seamless care.

The staff are fully trained and are supported by a designated early years practitioner to deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework.

The nursery features an extensive garden area which has been designed to maximise the potential for outdoor play, with carefully chosen, age-specific equipment.

My son has settled into the nursery wonderfully. People in the nursery are great with him and he's taken to them brilliantly. He runs into the nursery so excited every day and his progression since starting is amazing. Highly recommend it and couldn't be happier with the nursery and how it is ran. Thank

Children 1st @ Derby Road is an outstanding nursery! My son has been attending since he was 10 months old he's now 2 years. The staff are so knowledgeable about child development, as well as being warm and caring towards the children (and parents!). Last year my son was seriously unwell in hospital
and had several weeks away from nursery. The staff were amazing in supporting him to return when he was well enough and even sent a card and gift to him in hospital. The children eat well balanced freshly cooked food by the in house cook and get involved in so many games, activities and themed days and weeks. The communication between the nursery and parents is great, using their own app to record diary entries and sending messages through the online portal. My son has really grown in confidence and developed so much since attending the nursery. He loves spending time with his friends and 100% of the time has a huge smile on his face when he's collected.

Very enthusiastic staff. My child really enjoys going to this nursery and has been developing quickly. Good communication via the daily diary and development logs. Frequent photo updates via the app are great.

Both my sons went to Children 1st @ Derby Road Day Nursery from when they were babies until they went to school and we now use the holiday club.
Each of the rooms caters for the needs of the children perfectly and the staff are so friendly.
The managers and the rest of the higher team were always
great at helping with any queries and I never felt like I couldn’t ask for help.
The boys loved going to Children 1st which made it so much easier to do so. They loved all of the activities and playing with their friends. In all rooms there were elements of learning through play. In the ‘early years’ part of the nursery, they learned the basics of writing, letters and numbers which put them in good stead for school.
I couldn’t recommend the nursery enough and wouldn’t choose to go anywhere else.

I can’t believe my son will be heading off to school in September and this will mark the end of a significant period in our lives as a family; his older sister went to school last year after also attending nursery for almost four and a half years.
The staff are attentive and caring, both children
have their favourites and my daughter still hugs hers whenever she gets the chance. The staff have become an extension of our family and I will always be grateful. Choosing a nursery/school seems like such a huge decision but I genuinely have never regretted choosing Children 1st Day Nursery, I have every confidence that they put the needs of the children first and are supporting these young people to transition successfully into school and beyond.
At home we (attempt to) replicate the principles: kind hands, sharing is caring, indoor voices. I welcome the introduction of cultural celebrations, allowing children to explore diversity. Thanks for helping them develop and constantly supporting me too!

My little girl goes to Children 1st Day Nursy. As my first, I was so worried and scared but the manager and the team are great at keeping me up to date on how she is doing, her food, mood etc. on the day and her development. She's been at the nursery for a year now and I can't get over how much she
has picked up and learned. The team always are happy to see her and really make her feel special and included. Would recommend to anyone.

Excellent nursery. Both my children have attended this nursery since they were under 1 and the care and support to their learning have been outstanding. The staff go the extra mile to ensure they get the best out of the children and develop great lasting relationships. Both my children are now in school
but we continue to use the nursery for after school care and holiday club and both of these services they provide continue to be outstanding and I personally think the best in the local area.

Brilliant staff, very caring and understanding, my daughter has come along so well and is always happy to attend nursery and to see all of the staff and pupils. Excellent nursery! Our little boy is extremely happy at Children 1st @ Derby Road Day Nursery, he has grown so quickly in confidence and is very attached to the lovely staff who are so caring to him. Their activities are well thought out and our son enjoys them all very much. We feel that the staff genuinely care a great

We are really happy with how our daughter is developing, especially with the difficulties faced in the last two years. She is always happy when she returns so we know she is well looked after. Despite not being able to enter the building, we always feel involved and connected with what she is up to.
All the staff are friendly, the variety of activities are great and the quality of the food and general care is first-class.

The sing-along at the carols around the tree event was a beautiful evening, so nice to see everyone join in and having the added extra of a hot chocolate and treat was an amazing touch. My son loved singing along. Nursery have done themselves proud on how lovely the evening was presented. Couldn't recommend
them more highly. 10/10. Amazing nursery.

Children’s First @ Derby Road Day Nursery is an outstanding provider. They have nurtured and cared for my little boy for just over a year now and he continues to grow in confidence. Our 2-year-old loves nursery, similar to our eldest who went previously. She can’t wait to go every day. The staff and setting are lovely, and during Covid, it was all handled very well, I thought, with regular updates. Highly recommended.

Kate Horsley

Job Title: Nursery Manager Joined: 1995

My name is Kate Horsley and I am the Derby Road Nursery Manager. I have worked for the company for just over 29 years. I started in 1995 when I joined as a trainee nursery nurse. Over the years I completed my NVQ level 3 and then went on to do senior, deputy and management training. I am also the Nursery SENCO.


I have worked in several other Children's 1st Nurseries and have been set many challenges and given many opportunities to develop myself, constantly learning new things along the way.


As well as working full-time and running a thriving nursery I am also a full-time mum to 3 young children. Amelia is 18, Alfie is 14 and Arthur is 10 years old All of my children attend a Children's 1st Nursery and Out of School setting and love their time in them. I leave them feeling confident that the care they will get is as good as what I can provide for them.


I have only ever worked for Children 1st after joining when I left School. There has never been a reason for me to look elsewhere. I have always been more than satisfied with my own professional development and very happy in my job. I look forward to growing further within Children 1st and learning new skills which will help my team and I “Lead the Way & Shape the Future”
