Children 1st Derby Road Nursery School is situated within walking distance of Long Eaton town centre. It is easily accessible from the train station and bus routes. The nursery has been refurbished throughout to offer spacious and bright learning areas for babies, toddlers, pre-school children and for those in 'out of school' club aged up to twelve years.

The nursery has split the age-appropriate rooms over two levels and are uniquely designed to stimulate and inspire young children’s minds.

A team of dedicated staff ensure the children’s needs are nurtured in a home-from-home environment. Each staff member believes in strong parent partnerships in order to deliver seamless care.

The staff are fully trained and are supported by a designated early years practitioner to deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework.

The nursery features an extensive garden area which has been designed to maximise the potential for outdoor play, with carefully chosen, age-specific equipment.

My 16-month-old son started full-time in May and is so happy. He is loved, cared for and nurtured every day by the amazing staff at Children 1st @ Derby Road. We get lovely updates from the team and our boy is very very content. Thank you for making it so easy for me to go back to work!

I was a bit sceptical when I first decided to pop my little one who was just about to enter his 2's in a nursery setting. The way the staff at nursery made us feel assured was very helpful. My boy was made comfortable from day one and I am surprised to see the boost of confidence in his personality.
There are regular updates from the nursery as and when the activities are conducted and in spite of being a bit busy at times the key workers make sure to update us about the day of our little one!
Overall, a good nursery setting.

Children 1st - Derby Road is a wonderful Nursery and learning environment. Our daughter has been attending the nursery for around 17 months since she was 11 months old, and she looks forward to seeing her peers and key workers every day she is there. All of the staff are kind, caring and approachable
and have a lovely manner with the children. Thank you for being wonderful, we are so lucky to have found such a lovely place for our daughter to get the best start in her learning journey!

I have used this nursery for my three children, my youngest is now in the early years room. All the staff are wonderful with the children, it has always felt safe and comfortable I have never had any problems and the staff clearly care so much for the children and their jobs. In the early years, my
son has learnt so much already and will be very ready for school thanks to the staff. The nursery is currently having a renovation and it is looking wonderful. No other place I'd send my children.

Children 1st @ Derby Road is a fantastic nursery. I wouldn't send my children anywhere else. The staff take the time to really get to know the children and their personalities. My daughter and I love the nursery. All the staff are so lovely and welcoming so highly recommend them. When my friends and family ask about nursery I have nothing but good words to say to them. My daughter loves nursery and always has, but since being at this nursery my daughter has grown up so much.
She's happy and can't wait to get to nursery the following day.

The staff are really friendly and make you feel welcome. The staff are amazing with the children. The nursery is always clean and you can tell they take pride in their work. It always seems the children are happy whilst there thanks to the staff. My child hates leaving me however, once there, absolutely
loves it. She has really settled there as she has really good bonds with the teachers and has made a few more friends now.

I cannot praise and recommend this nursery enough! They are amazing in every way possible. They really care for the children that attend there. My son has been going there for nearly a year and has settled in so well, he runs into nursery every morning with so much excitement to see his friends and

The nursery has been a great place for my son to learn and play. He has been supported greatly by staff and staff have also helped us as parents. My sons development, not just educational but personal, has been amazing since he started in April 2022. I cant thank the staff enough for what they do.

We could not be happier with the staff at Children 1st @ Derby Road. My son has grown in confidence socially and academically in the past year whilst attending the nursery.
The staff have been fantastic and made him feel very at home. You get such a warm and friendly feeling as soon as you walk in.

Children 1st @ Derby Road is an outstanding nursery! My son has been attending since he was 10 months old he's now 2 years. The staff are so knowledgeable about child development, as well as being warm and caring towards the children (and parents!). Last year my son was seriously unwell in hospital
and had several weeks away from nursery. The staff were amazing in supporting him to return when he was well enough and even sent a card and gift to him in hospital. The children eat well balanced freshly cooked food by the in house cook and get involved in so many games, activities and themed days and weeks. The communication between the nursery and parents is great, using their own app to record diary entries and sending messages through the online portal. My son has really grown in confidence and developed so much since attending the nursery. He loves spending time with his friends and 100% of the time has a huge smile on his face when he's collected.

Both my sons went to Children 1st @ Derby Road Day Nursery from when they were babies until they went to school and we now use the holiday club.
Each of the rooms caters for the needs of the children perfectly and the staff are so friendly.
The managers and the rest of the higher team were always
great at helping with any queries and I never felt like I couldn’t ask for help.
The boys loved going to Children 1st which made it so much easier to do so. They loved all of the activities and playing with their friends. In all rooms there were elements of learning through play. In the ‘early years’ part of the nursery, they learned the basics of writing, letters and numbers which put them in good stead for school.
I couldn’t recommend the nursery enough and wouldn’t choose to go anywhere else.

I can’t believe my son will be heading off to school in September and this will mark the end of a significant period in our lives as a family; his older sister went to school last year after also attending nursery for almost four and a half years.
The staff are attentive and caring, both children
have their favourites and my daughter still hugs hers whenever she gets the chance. The staff have become an extension of our family and I will always be grateful. Choosing a nursery/school seems like such a huge decision but I genuinely have never regretted choosing Children 1st Day Nursery, I have every confidence that they put the needs of the children first and are supporting these young people to transition successfully into school and beyond.
At home we (attempt to) replicate the principles: kind hands, sharing is caring, indoor voices. I welcome the introduction of cultural celebrations, allowing children to explore diversity. Thanks for helping them develop and constantly supporting me too!

My little girl goes to Children 1st Day Nursy. As my first, I was so worried and scared but the manager and the team are great at keeping me up to date on how she is doing, her food, mood etc. on the day and her development. She's been at the nursery for a year now and I can't get over how much she
has picked up and learned. The team always are happy to see her and really make her feel special and included. Would recommend to anyone.

Kate Horsley

Job Title: Nursery Manager Joined: 1995

My name is Kate Horsley and I am the Derby Road Nursery Manager. I have worked for the company for just over 29 years. I started in 1995 when I joined as a trainee nursery nurse. Over the years I completed my NVQ level 3 and then went on to do senior, deputy and management training. I am also the Nursery SENCO.


I have worked in several other Children's 1st Nurseries and have been set many challenges and given many opportunities to develop myself, constantly learning new things along the way.


As well as working full-time and running a thriving nursery I am also a full-time mum to 3 young children. Amelia is 18, Alfie is 14 and Arthur is 10 years old All of my children attend a Children's 1st Nursery and Out of School setting and love their time in them. I leave them feeling confident that the care they will get is as good as what I can provide for them.


I have only ever worked for Children 1st after joining when I left School. There has never been a reason for me to look elsewhere. I have always been more than satisfied with my own professional development and very happy in my job. I look forward to growing further within Children 1st and learning new skills which will help my team and I “Lead the Way & Shape the Future”
