Very friendly, helpful team. Always there to offer advise, most recently so on potty training, they are always on hand and support what we do at home to be consistent which is important. Keep up the good work.

As a new mum of my first baby, sending her to nursery was just terrifying for me. It wasn’t a route I particularly wanted to take (no one wants to return from maternity leave but it has to be done in some situations!) We were recommended Children 1st by a friend and thought we’d just take a look. From
our first visit with the nursery manager, I knew this was the place my girl was going to thrive. The manager is truly incredible and you can tell from the moment you meet her, that this isn’t a job to her, she loves those children as her own. One of the staff members is my girl's key worker and you can tell already they work so well together, she gives her cuddles when needed and that’s what I wanted. Nothing is too much for the girls at Children 1st. They literally put your children first and the rest just follows naturally.
Reply from David Hancock, Chief Executive at Children 1st Derby Road Nursery SchoolIt’s so lovely to hear about both you and your little ones' Children's journey. I’m so pleased to hear how much your little one enjoys attending our Derby Road setting as well as the ease you feel while she’s there. My daughter has type 1 diabetes and the staff have been absolutely outstanding with their support. The team have learnt all about her needs, pump and glucose monitor and have taken it within their stride giving her the best possible care. They ensure that her needs are met and make sure that she is
involved with the other children, keeping things as normal as possible for her. My daughter's sugar readings are always really good when attending nursery and if the team ever have any issues, they will always call to make sure they are doing the best they can.
Huge shout out to one member of staff, in particular, who smashes monitoring my daughter's diabetes and take such a calm and caring approach. She is now a diabetes expert for sure!
My daughter is always so well cared for. She is always made to feel so welcome and even on her off days, the staff do all they can to make her feel happy when there.
I cannot rate this nursery enough or thank them for all they have done for my daughter - we will forever be grateful!

The progress our little boy has made since starting here is nothing short of remarkable. He loves nursery and has developed good relationships with all the staff there. The staff are friendly and genuinely care about your child. I also like how they are very good at providing emotional support and cuddles
etc. which has been really important for his development and feeling safe and secure etc. So glad we chose this nursery.

From the initial enquiry to now three months into his nursery journey, all the ladies have been amazing. Such a lovely environment and always happy. My little girl started in January 2023 and loves going to nursery. Dropping her off at nursery is one of my favourite parts of the day because the atmosphere is so positive and happy and I always feel like I and my daughter are the nursery's number 1 parent and child. They all make time to say hello
and make you feel really welcome every morning. I don't usually pick up as my partner does but when I do, again, they always pay alot of attention to you as the parent and make sure that their attention is fully on you while the pickup/drop off is happening.
If my child has ever felt sad when I've left, I know that she will be so well cared for and I know her tears will only last a few minutes and the carer's full attention will be on her until she feels better again. I also feel that they push her education as and when it's needed and prompt me to which I appreciate; as a first time mum, I don't always know what targets I should be striving for!
Reply from David Hancock, Chief Executive at Children 1st Derby Road Nursery SchoolWhat a lovely review and thank you for taking the time to write it.
I am so glad to learn that both you and your daughter are enjoying our nursery so much. Your remarks about my colleagues at the nursery really are delightful. Our ethos is to put both children and parents first and the team works very hard to ensure drop-off transitions and pick-ups are focused on; we like to ensure parents go away with any anxieties.
Again, thank you for your comments, the team will be super happy.

Since starting the nursery, my child has been very well cared for, communication is great and his needs have always been met. Even through illnesses and through dietary restrictions (due to sensitivities and intolerances) the staff have always gone above and beyond to take care of my little one.

Excellent nursery, the staff are all really friendly and create a lovely atmosphere for the kids. The activities they plan are always varied and interesting and they spend a lot of time playing outdoors which is perfect for my little one.
They offer a great variety of snacks and meals, my little one

We are so pleased with how our daughter is cared for at Children 1st, she is so unbelievably content at nursery and in the baby room. Her keyworker is truly wonderful, she knows our child so well and understands and meets her needs each week that she attends. The rest of the Gemima Puddleducks team
are so lovely, welcoming and always have been approachable. Updates on our child's day and general progress are frequent and informative. Helping us see just what she has been working on development wise and how much she has changed in her short time at the nursery.
Our daughter's learning and development has come on in leaps and bounds. The meals all sound delicious and our child seems to eat everything up!
It really is an outstanding nursery.

We are always welcomed into the building and all staff seem to recognise, if not know my child's name which is lovely. We feel confident to ask for feedback and question anything we are not sure of or little things our child may say which we need context to.
The updated building and new play equipment
look great and our child is always engaged in play when we collect.
The only thing I think which could improve is for staff who are new to a room, covering or when we move rooms, is to introduce themselves to us, I like to know the names of who is looking after my child and although they may seem to know my child, if I've never met them a "hello, I'm....." would be fantastic.

I am really happy with my 4 year old attending this nursery, the staff are all so attentive and kind, my little boy feels very comfortable with them all and often speaks freely with them, he certainly views the male staff as his own friend and speaks of him often in this light. He is always so excited
to go which has definitely made him ready to attend 'big' school in September, so I'm very relieved Children 1st Breedon House has helped prepare him for this big milestone. Thank you!

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.897)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.897) out of 10 for Children 1st Derby Road Nursery School is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 44 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 44 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.897 for Children 1st Derby Road Nursery School is calculated as follows: ( (477 Excellents x 5) + (44 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 526 Ratings = 4.897
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Children 1st Derby Road Nursery School is based on 44 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 143 number of registered child places is 28.6, which has been reached with 44 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Nursery Manager Joined: 1995

My name is Kate Horsley and I am the Derby Road Nursery Manager. I have worked for the company for just over 29 years. I started in 1995 when I joined as a trainee nursery nurse. Over the years I completed my NVQ level 3 and then went on to do senior, deputy and management training. I am also the Nursery SENCO.

I have worked in several other Children's 1st Nurseries and have been set many challenges and given many opportunities to develop myself, constantly learning new things along the way.

As well as working full-time and running a thriving nursery I am also a full-time mum to 3 young children. Amelia is 18, Alfie is 14 and Arthur is 10 years old All of my children attend a Children's 1st Nursery and Out of School setting and love their time in them. I leave them feeling confident that the care they will get is as good as what I can provide for them.

I have only ever worked for Children 1st after joining when I left School. There has never been a reason for me to look elsewhere. I have always been more than satisfied with my own professional development and very happy in my job. I look forward to growing further within Children 1st and learning new skills which will help my team and I “Lead the Way & Shape the Future”
