I love this nursery, it feels like home to us. I have 3 boys, my eldest was there for 3 years, my next is there now and my baby is signed up to start soon.
After seeing the nursery from every angle I can say I would recommend it to anyone. The staff looking after my boys are warm, caring and have
such a bond with them and they come home talking about them.
The management are lovely, very approachable and always there to listen and answer questions.
The nursery food is so varied and lovely to know it's all cooked from scratch. The activities are very varied, inside, outside, messy play, creative, educational and they do so much with the children.
My kids have made best friends here and progressed to school with their friends and always look forward to nursery days.

Staff are all extremely friendly and up to date with the day to day activities of my child. Everyone is very approachable and have assisted me with any queries or concerns I may have had. My child's development progresses on a daily basis with noticeable changes in vocabulary and social skills. Very
happy with communication that I receive either via email, text or via the app.

My daughter started in January when she was a little over 12 months old. She has come on so much since starting nursery and is learning so much. Shes making lots of new friends and really loves the staff there. All the ladies are so nice and wonderful. Would recommend this nursery to anyone. I'm actually
sad that one day she'll have to leave.

General care is ok but have concerns about the cleanliness standards that are maintained.
Examples being;
1 - The Children's toilets obviously soiled and needing cleaning by midday.
2 - Poor efforts made to clean children's hands after messy play/mud kitchen. Not suggesting these activities are
removed but more effort needed to prevent ingestion of dirt by children.
3 - When accidents happen ensure that they are recorded. I've had to ensure that incident records are completed etc.

The nursery is a lovely friendly and safe environment, my child is extremely happy to attend and always happy when I collect her, the nursery has helped hugely with potty training my child and she talks about the staff a lot at home!

Excellent nursery. Both my boys have been there since they were 8 months old. All the staff are attentive to their needs, caring, friendly and supportive in their learning and development and most importantly they have fun there and the little ones love it!
My eldest is in early years and loves learning,
drawing, and writing and the staff have a perfect balance of supporting him in what he enjoys doing and building on his skills without being pushy about it.
Whenever children have been unwell the staff have always made sensible decisions and contact me promptly and appropriately.
I would highly recommend this nursery.

Amazing! My little one goes full time and she loves it. Never wants to leave! Will definitely be staying for next few years. Never have to worry about little one's well being. The food menu is great. Big variety of meals and it must be delicious as it's aways all eaten :)

My son has been going to children 1st @ Derby Road since last sept. I've been very happy with the care provided. The staff are friendly and caring and every time I've gone in are engaged with the children. Any babies who are upset are cuddled and soon distracted by an activity. They do plenty of creative
play and I get weekly photos with activities/progress of my son.
He has a dairy allergy which has never phased them and the meals provided are varied and nutritious. My son would not nap in a cot so the staff happily rocked him to sleep in a pram until he was able to lie down and settle on a mat with the other children. I'm very happy with the nursery and the care he gets.

We've always been delighted with this nursery, right from the first visit. Over the last four years they've cared for our two children. The oldest is now with them for wrap around care, and the youngest is still enjoying daycare. We have never had any cause for concern and if I had to choose a nursery
for my children again I would always choose this one.

Both of my children have been to or are at this nursery. My 15-month-old little boy has recently moved up to the next room after being in the baby room since he was 9 months old. All of the staff are so friendly and welcoming. Even the Ines you don't see on a day to day basis always greet you with a
genuine smile and a hello. I love the set out of the nursery and all the activities that they do with the children. The daily journals are always completed and the app with the pictures and milestones are fantastic and really make me feel like I have a real good understanding of what he is doing every day and all the new things he is learning. I would absolutely recommend this nursery to anyone! My little boy loves it and so do I :-)

My son is a different boy since starting at this nursery. He had always been a bit behind his peers with his speech but has improved so much in his short time here. It's quite incredible! The whole team appear to have done a fantastic job, not just developing his speech and language, but also with his
confidence. He loves it here and is sad when it's weekend/half term etc. Even when we moved from the area I chose to keep my son here and travel each day, as he was doing so well. highly recommended nursery.

My son attended Children 1st @ Derby road since he was 6 months old until he was 4 1/2. In that time I have seen so many changes in him such as his confidence, speech, manners. He loved going and never wanted to come home. All the staff are very friendly.
He now attends the out of schools club after
school and loves it.
Nothing is too much trouble for them if they can help then they will.

As a 1st time parent, I was extra picky with my daughter's nursery but the manager and her team at children 1st @ Derby Road made me feel I would be happy to leave my child in their care as soon as I walked through the door. In the couple of weeks that my daughter has been there, she's loved every moment
and it shows when she's at home. I would highly recommend the manager and her team to anyone I know.

when I wanted my son to start a nursery I had a few viewings booked at 3 nurseries around me my first viewing was at Children 1st @ Derby Road, straight away I knew this was the right nursery for him and didn't bother viewing the others. I felt so welcomed and at ease from the beginning. My then 2 and
a half year old felt so comfortable with the staff and happily went off to play while I spoke to the manager who is absolutely lovely along with every member of staff! Everyone has a smile on their face and are always upbeat and happy. My little boy has such a good relationship with the staff, they are all excellent at their job and I know he's in excellent hands with all of them, they have helped him progress so much in his speech and his letters and writing his name and so much more. I choose to keep him at this nursery instead of sending him to a school nursery because I'm so happy with how the nursery is run and I'll be so sad when he leaves to start big school!

My 2 boys are at this nursery at the moment and they absolutely love it. No tears when going in and always leave smiling because they've had a great day. I am kept informed about what they are learning, how to help at home with bits and what they are most interested in. I also have another son who went
to this nursery too, he loved it just as much. The staff are so friendly, approachable and actually listen to you.
I highly recommend. :)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.897) out of 10 for Children 1st Derby Road Nursery School is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 44 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 44 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.897 for Children 1st Derby Road Nursery School is calculated as follows: ( (477 Excellents x 5) + (44 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 526 Ratings = 4.897
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Children 1st Derby Road Nursery School is based on 44 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 143 number of registered child places is 28.6, which has been reached with 44 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Nursery Manager Joined: 1995

My name is Kate Horsley and I am the Derby Road Nursery Manager. I have worked for the company for just over 29 years. I started in 1995 when I joined as a trainee nursery nurse. Over the years I completed my NVQ level 3 and then went on to do senior, deputy and management training. I am also the Nursery SENCO.

I have worked in several other Children's 1st Nurseries and have been set many challenges and given many opportunities to develop myself, constantly learning new things along the way.

As well as working full-time and running a thriving nursery I am also a full-time mum to 3 young children. Amelia is 18, Alfie is 14 and Arthur is 10 years old All of my children attend a Children's 1st Nursery and Out of School setting and love their time in them. I leave them feeling confident that the care they will get is as good as what I can provide for them.

I have only ever worked for Children 1st after joining when I left School. There has never been a reason for me to look elsewhere. I have always been more than satisfied with my own professional development and very happy in my job. I look forward to growing further within Children 1st and learning new skills which will help my team and I “Lead the Way & Shape the Future”
