Children 1st Derby Road Nursery School is situated within walking distance of Long Eaton town centre. It is easily accessible from the train station and bus routes. The nursery has been refurbished throughout to offer spacious and bright learning areas for babies, toddlers, pre-school children and for those in 'out of school' club aged up to twelve years.

The nursery has split the age-appropriate rooms over two levels and are uniquely designed to stimulate and inspire young children’s minds.

A team of dedicated staff ensure the children’s needs are nurtured in a home-from-home environment. Each staff member believes in strong parent partnerships in order to deliver seamless care.

The staff are fully trained and are supported by a designated early years practitioner to deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework.

The nursery features an extensive garden area which has been designed to maximise the potential for outdoor play, with carefully chosen, age-specific equipment.

As a 1st time parent, I was extra picky with my daughter's nursery but the manager and her team at children 1st @ Derby Road made me feel I would be happy to leave my child in their care as soon as I walked through the door. In the couple of weeks that my daughter has been there, she's loved every moment
and it shows when she's at home. I would highly recommend the manager and her team to anyone I know.

when I wanted my son to start a nursery I had a few viewings booked at 3 nurseries around me my first viewing was at Children 1st @ Derby Road, straight away I knew this was the right nursery for him and didn't bother viewing the others. I felt so welcomed and at ease from the beginning. My then 2 and
a half year old felt so comfortable with the staff and happily went off to play while I spoke to the manager who is absolutely lovely along with every member of staff! Everyone has a smile on their face and are always upbeat and happy. My little boy has such a good relationship with the staff, they are all excellent at their job and I know he's in excellent hands with all of them, they have helped him progress so much in his speech and his letters and writing his name and so much more. I choose to keep him at this nursery instead of sending him to a school nursery because I'm so happy with how the nursery is run and I'll be so sad when he leaves to start big school!

I am very pleased with how my son has come on since attending Children's 1st nursery. The staff are really lovely and I feel reassured that he is safe and being looked after well and feel happy about leaving him there.

My 2 boys are at this nursery at the moment and they absolutely love it. No tears when going in and always leave smiling because they've had a great day. I am kept informed about what they are learning, how to help at home with bits and what they are most interested in. I also have another son who went
to this nursery too, he loved it just as much. The staff are so friendly, approachable and actually listen to you.
I highly recommend. :)

I attended a visit to the nursery and was very impressed, as a teacher myself, I felt I had high expectations for a nursery setting when I began searching for my son. I wasn't disappointed! Greeted happily and met by the manager both me and my son were made very welcome. All staff were happy/smiling/interacting
with children around them, very stimulating environment, a wide range of activities for children to access alone or to complete alongside adults. Snack and water areas clearly zoned and outdoor provision well facilitated. Very happy with this as my choice of nursery.

Choosing a nursery for our son was not a job that we took lightly. We viewed many nurseries within the area but so so pleased we went with Children 1st. The bright, safe and secure environment was welcoming from the start. All staff are very friendly and have been there for our child since he joined
the nursery at 10 months old. He is now almost 4 and is within the early years unit. He is developing well due to the fantastic opportunities he is given on a daily basis. The teaching and learning is second to none and we are consulted with on a daily basis about our child's development through the early years log online, learning journey and the staff team knowing our son inside out. It is evident that our son is cared for by the very best practitioners in the industry. I can not recommend this nursery enough.

My little boy has been attending the nursery since I returned back to work in April. I know that I do not have to worry about him whilst I'm at work because he's always really well looked after. My little boy is smiling when I drop him off and smiling when I fetch him. I know he's had a great day. He
has a diary so I know exactly what he's been doing throughout the day and what he has eaten as well as how much he's slept. The eyLog (early years Log) is great because I get to see pictures/videos of how much fun he's having. The staff are brilliant and always have time to talk to you about your child or to discuss any problems you may have. I cannot recommend this nursery enough!

A wonderful nursery. I'm very pleased to have my son here. The comments book which tells me about his day is a great touch and the occasional picture using the Early Years app always brightens up my day. The food is also excellent and has a good healthy balance to it. I'd recommend it without hesitation.

My son has been at this nursery for over 2 years. I find the staff are incredibly helpful and very welcoming. Nothing seems too much trouble. I loved the diaries we were given when my son was in the younger groups and now he is older, the staff give us the same information verbally. The food seems to
be healthy and varied. The equipment in each room is plentiful and regularly changed and the children seem to have many learning opportunities and activities. The nursery uses an online system where you can check on the progress of your child. My son seems very happy there. I would recommend this nursery to others looking for quality care for their children.

My son has been attending this nursery since 2014 and we have been extremely pleased with his progress. He's a sensitive soul and the nursery are fully aware that he can take a little longer to settle than others and have adapted very well to his needs. Although he still cries when I leave him some
days he has never said he doesn't want to go and when I collect him he's always so excited to tell me about his day. The amount of time they spend outside is brilliant, they will spend most of the day outside if they can. The nursery staff are kind and professional. I have never had a single complaint in the two years my son has been attending. I highly recommend Derby Road nursery.

This nursery is simply brilliant in every aspect. It is coming up to 7 months since my daughter joined and even from the start there were measures in place to help her settle in and it went brilliantly with no tears. In fact now, every time we pull up in the morning and I say "we're at nursery" she
has the biggest smile on her face! The manager and the team have been very supportive with my fussy eater and she has come on leaps and bounds since joining here. She loves to play and comes home with lots of things that she has made. She has a brilliant time here and they treat each child as an individual and listen to your requests you have for your child. I am so pleased we picked this nursery, it has been brilliant. There is so much to stimulate and no 2 days are the same. I fully believe this has been crucial to her development and I highly recommend this nursery. The staff are brilliant, very friendly, always smiling and it is just the environment I want for my little one.

Kate Horsley

Job Title: Nursery Manager Joined: 1995

My name is Kate Horsley and I am the Derby Road Nursery Manager. I have worked for the company for just over 29 years. I started in 1995 when I joined as a trainee nursery nurse. Over the years I completed my NVQ level 3 and then went on to do senior, deputy and management training. I am also the Nursery SENCO.


I have worked in several other Children's 1st Nurseries and have been set many challenges and given many opportunities to develop myself, constantly learning new things along the way.


As well as working full-time and running a thriving nursery I am also a full-time mum to 3 young children. Amelia is 18, Alfie is 14 and Arthur is 10 years old All of my children attend a Children's 1st Nursery and Out of School setting and love their time in them. I leave them feeling confident that the care they will get is as good as what I can provide for them.


I have only ever worked for Children 1st after joining when I left School. There has never been a reason for me to look elsewhere. I have always been more than satisfied with my own professional development and very happy in my job. I look forward to growing further within Children 1st and learning new skills which will help my team and I “Lead the Way & Shape the Future”
