My nearly 3 year old has attended the Derby Road nursery since he was 10 months old, I honestly could not recommend this nursery enough. The staff are amazing and friendly and my little one absolutely loves the ladies there he even calls one his best friend. He has formed amazing friendships in his
group and is always excited for the days he attends nursery.
The admin staff are always very helpful too, always on hand to answer any questions I have and are really friendly and approachable.
My little one tells me what he’s eaten at nursery and asks for certain things at home too so I feel the kitchen staff should have some recognition too.
The ey log app they use to communicate with parents is great, I have pictures uploaded and a description of what my toddler has been doing. They also send their next development steps too which is helpful to know as I can also encourage this at home.
All in all amazing staff, amazing nursery.

My daughter absolutely loves Nursery. She always gets so excited when we pull up in the car and she realises where we are. She has come on leaps and bounds since she moved up to Bobtails in September, something both myself and my husband have commented on several times. We’ve recently moved out of Long
Eaton but we think the extra 10 min drive is 100% worth it seeing how happy she is at Derby Road and how much she is developing. We are due another little girl in Feb and already have her booked in. My daughter walks into nursery with open arms and comes out with a massive smile on her face, I know she’s always had a great day. The staff are amazing and you can tell they really care for every single child and us parents, especially the manager. She sold the nursery to us within 5 mins purely based on how passionate she was about everything and the amount of trust, care and respect she showed us.

Our now 4-year-old has been at Children 1st for 2 years now and goes 3 days a week. We have been so impressed by every aspect of this nursery for our little boy! The staff are all friendly, approachable and professional and we know our child is in safe hands. We would highly recommend! They always have
fantastic activities lined up. My child enjoys going which is the main thing!

Children 1st @ Derby Road have many policies in place in regards to COVID-19, where members of staff are very hardworking and are provided with PPE.
My son is currently 18 months old and all of his individual needs are met every afternoon he attends; he started at 8 months old.
Derby Road provides
every child with healthy meals, which my little one loves and always encourage children to eat healthily at home too.
Staff are amazing with feedback at the end of the nursery day always smiling, coming across approachable and being very informative.
The nursery itself is very colourful, has a positive environment, and has suitable toys for all ages, and have policies in place to always ensure this.
Thank you Derby Road!

Very helpful. I’ve recently been made redundant and they have been really helpful, I didn’t want to take my daughter out and they have changed her hours.
I have also noticed a massive change in my daughter, her learning has come on leaps and bounds.

From the moment we were shown around the nursery we knew it was perfect for us. All the staff really care about the children. There are varied activities and the food options are excellent. My very fussy son eats everything. My son had a delayed start to nursery and took a little adjusting to nursery
life but the staff have been so loving and patient towards him. Reception and admin staff are always helpful and obliging with our many requests. Really impressed with their handling of the Coronavirus all staff have been fabulous in such trying times.

Having had this nursery recommended to me by several mummy friends, I can see why. The staff are kind, caring and very professional. They always go above and beyond to help in anyway they can. I love how the home/nursery diary lets me know how my little ones day has gone from what he has eaten to all
the fun activities he has done. The EY log app also records observations and photos too. My transition to return back to work has been made easier as I know my little one is in the best care possible. Thank you to everyone involved.

I felt very comfortable at this nursery from my first visit to see it. The manager is excellent and really put me at ease, she sold it to me at my first visit and even though I went to visit other nurseries after, none of them made me as comfortable as this nursery did.
My child started during COVID
which meant the settling periods were not as are normally, I was still able to go into the nursery for the settling visit which was good. The workers in the room my daughter attends are welcoming and there is very good communication. I am so pleased there is a daily handover book which details what my daughter has eaten when her nappies were changed and what she did that day. There is also an app where photos can be sent by the nursery to show me what my daughter is doing during the day.
My daughter is happy there and there appears to be a wide range of activities she takes part in.

My daughter started at Derby Road at 11-months-old; when we attended the appointment to look around, we couldn’t have been made to feel more welcomed and informed of all the details about the nursery by the manager. We discussed everything we had questions about, and we got all the answers we needed.

My daughter has now had 9-months at nursery, and she has come on in leaps and bounds, she loves it, she gets to play with other children all day, enjoying crafts, messy play, playing in the gardens, storytimes and dancing amongst other things. I love how the nursery keeps me up to date with her development via the app with pictures and comments, and also her daily diary also informs me of how she has done day-by-day.

It is a lovely environment for the children and my child clearly enjoys it. They have great outdoor spaces which they often utilize. Unfortunately, the entry to the nursery has an awkward doorway with a ridge that prams get stuck on as you try to hold the door open whilst manoeuvring the pram. There
is also very little room to leave your prams during the day. I find it a little on the expensive side as the "15hrs free" childcare is not really free as they only accept the 15hrs as 3hrs a day Mon-Fri wrap around. Also, they charge for bank holidays even though the children don't attend and charge 50% for Christmas week; again even though the nursery is shut.

The staff at Children 1st @ Derby Road are caring and attentive from Jemima Puddle Ducks through to Peter Rabbits.
My son has needed additional support and the staff have gone out of their way to ensure his needs are met at all times.
Communication is clear through the daily diary and allows me to
know what my children have been doing throughout the day. The caring nature of the staff have made my return to work easier and I feel happy knowing my children are being safely looked after and needs are met by all staff. Thank you to everyone.

Couldn't be happier with the nursery. Friendly, caring staff who couldn't do more for the children. You can see the bond the children have with all the staff. My son feels happy, safe and secure at the nursery. He regularly brings items he has made home and the eylog is great for getting regular updates
and messages. As parents, we are more than happy with the care and attention our son receives.

The staff at the nursery are extremely engaged and friendly. My son has always enjoyed nursery and it's clear to see how he's developed over the last year and a half. The staff are quick to deal with any issues and keep up updated on our son's development. The manager and her team are a credit to the
Children 1st group of nurseries.

I have 3 young children and I was quite worried about returning to full-time work. I contacted the nursery manager and asked if all three of my children (a baby, a pre-school child, and a school going child) could attend the nursery. From that first email to date, the nursery staff have been amazing
in how they respond to parents and how they look after the children and engage with them. They are aware of the pressures on working parents and do their best to share what the children do at nursery. Their eyLog is a fantastic way to see photos and videos of my children learning and playing. I feel less guilty about not being with my kids full-time when I see how much fun they have at nursery. The children eat nutritious and tasty meals and are well-cared for all day. There are additional activities like learning foreign languages and dancing as well. I strongly recommend Children's First at Derby Road for their excellent care all the way from babies to out of school activities.

My daughter has been attending from age 1 and now is 4 1/2, due to go to school later this year. I have been very impressed throughout her time at nursery, I always felt she is safe and cared for. Her development has been promoted by staff, and now even more so in early years. She has learnt her letters
and numbers entirely through nursery classes, she is able to write her name etc I am constantly surprised by her development. The staff are genuinely interested in updating us as parents and clearly engage with her during her time there. She speaks about her time in nursery with fondness relating to the activities, her friendships and the staff. I believe her time in the early years will have prepared her extremely well for school. I can't praise the nursery highly enough for a well rounded care package. We moved out of the area 12 months ago and were unable to find a local nursery which compared with Children 1st.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.897)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.897) out of 10 for Children 1st Derby Road Nursery School is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 44 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 44 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.897 for Children 1st Derby Road Nursery School is calculated as follows: ( (477 Excellents x 5) + (44 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 526 Ratings = 4.897
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Children 1st Derby Road Nursery School is based on 44 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 143 number of registered child places is 28.6, which has been reached with 44 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Nursery Manager Joined: 1995

My name is Kate Horsley and I am the Derby Road Nursery Manager. I have worked for the company for just over 29 years. I started in 1995 when I joined as a trainee nursery nurse. Over the years I completed my NVQ level 3 and then went on to do senior, deputy and management training. I am also the Nursery SENCO.

I have worked in several other Children's 1st Nurseries and have been set many challenges and given many opportunities to develop myself, constantly learning new things along the way.

As well as working full-time and running a thriving nursery I am also a full-time mum to 3 young children. Amelia is 18, Alfie is 14 and Arthur is 10 years old All of my children attend a Children's 1st Nursery and Out of School setting and love their time in them. I leave them feeling confident that the care they will get is as good as what I can provide for them.

I have only ever worked for Children 1st after joining when I left School. There has never been a reason for me to look elsewhere. I have always been more than satisfied with my own professional development and very happy in my job. I look forward to growing further within Children 1st and learning new skills which will help my team and I “Lead the Way & Shape the Future”
