Children 1st Derby Road Nursery School is situated within walking distance of Long Eaton town centre. It is easily accessible from the train station and bus routes. The nursery has been refurbished throughout to offer spacious and bright learning areas for babies, toddlers, pre-school children and for those in 'out of school' club aged up to twelve years.

The nursery has split the age-appropriate rooms over two levels and are uniquely designed to stimulate and inspire young children’s minds.

A team of dedicated staff ensure the children’s needs are nurtured in a home-from-home environment. Each staff member believes in strong parent partnerships in order to deliver seamless care.

The staff are fully trained and are supported by a designated early years practitioner to deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework.

The nursery features an extensive garden area which has been designed to maximise the potential for outdoor play, with carefully chosen, age-specific equipment.

It is a lovely environment for the children and my child clearly enjoys it. They have great outdoor spaces which they often utilize. Unfortunately, the entry to the nursery has an awkward doorway with a ridge that prams get stuck on as you try to hold the door open whilst manoeuvring the pram. There
is also very little room to leave your prams during the day. I find it a little on the expensive side as the "15hrs free" childcare is not really free as they only accept the 15hrs as 3hrs a day Mon-Fri wrap around. Also, they charge for bank holidays even though the children don't attend and charge 50% for Christmas week; again even though the nursery is shut.

The staff at Children 1st @ Derby Road are caring and attentive from Jemima Puddle Ducks through to Peter Rabbits.
My son has needed additional support and the staff have gone out of their way to ensure his needs are met at all times.
Communication is clear through the daily diary and allows me to
know what my children have been doing throughout the day. The caring nature of the staff have made my return to work easier and I feel happy knowing my children are being safely looked after and needs are met by all staff. Thank you to everyone.

Couldn't be happier with the nursery. Friendly, caring staff who couldn't do more for the children. You can see the bond the children have with all the staff. My son feels happy, safe and secure at the nursery. He regularly brings items he has made home and the eylog is great for getting regular updates
and messages. As parents, we are more than happy with the care and attention our son receives.

The staff at the nursery are extremely engaged and friendly. My son has always enjoyed nursery and it's clear to see how he's developed over the last year and a half. I have 3 young children and I was quite worried about returning to full-time work. I contacted the nursery manager and asked if all three of my children (a baby, a pre-school child, and a school going child) could attend the nursery. From that first email to date, the nursery staff have been amazing
in how they respond to parents and how they look after the children and engage with them. They are aware of the pressures on working parents and do their best to share what the children do at nursery. Their eyLog is a fantastic way to see photos and videos of my children learning and playing. I feel less guilty about not being with my kids full-time when I see how much fun they have at nursery. The children eat nutritious and tasty meals and are well-cared for all day. There are additional activities like learning foreign languages and dancing as well. I strongly recommend Children's First at Derby Road for their excellent care all the way from babies to out of school activities.

My daughter has been attending from age 1 and now is 4 1/2, due to go to school later this year. I have been very impressed throughout her time at nursery, I always felt she is safe and cared for. Her development has been promoted by staff, and now even more so in early years. She has learnt her letters
and numbers entirely through nursery classes, she is able to write her name etc I am constantly surprised by her development. The staff are genuinely interested in updating us as parents and clearly engage with her during her time there. She speaks about her time in nursery with fondness relating to the activities, her friendships and the staff. I believe her time in the early years will have prepared her extremely well for school. I can't praise the nursery highly enough for a well rounded care package. We moved out of the area 12 months ago and were unable to find a local nursery which compared with Children 1st.

Due to a hospital stay and ill health I have had to put my son into nursery for lots of extra days and the staff have all been amazing at helping him cope. Giving him extra attention and cuddles when he needed it and making sure they eased my worries by reporting back how he had been each day. My son
has some special needs and the nursery have helped to apply for funding to get him some extra support. They have kept me informed and gone through the completed forms, asking for my opinion. The staff always greet me and my son with such warmth and have really taken the time to get to know him and his quirky little ways. They always point out all the great things he can do and make me feel proud of him and what he has achieved. He loves this nursery and feels 100% safe there - I am so glad I found Children 1st.

My daughter has been going to Children 1st @ Derby Road for over a year now. All staff in baby's, bobtails and peter rabbits are always happy to help and advise with what my daughter needs while she's at nursery. They're all very friendly and my daughter seems settled when at nursery.

My daughter is very happy at nursery and has a great relationship with her keyworkers who are kind, caring, helpful and fun. My daughter has developed in many ways since joining Children 1st at 10 months old.
This is a lovely clean nursery with a great range of outdoor play areas and activities for
children of all ages.
I have every confidence in her care, the staff are attentive and the updates, both in her daily diary and on Eylog are informative.
I feel relaxed knowing that my daughter is in safe hands.

We are sadly moving home and have struggled to find another nursery closer to home that is at the same standard as Children 1st @ Derby Road. I literally can’t praise this nursery enough. All the staff are very friendly and caring, whilst maintaining professionalism at all times. The facilities are
very good and constantly evolving to adapt to the learning and development of the children. My little girl leaves each night with a snack for the journey home which is a lifesaver for the long commute we have!
It is always been a clean, warm and friendly atmosphere. The manager and deputy managers are also very good and approachable. They have a good knowledge of all the children on site and their development plans. The staff use an EY log which is a brilliant tool in seeing how your child is developing and capturing the milestones that we miss whilst she is at nursery. We are very sad to leave and we wish we could keep our little girl there as it has contributed to a huge part of our development!

At a stressful time in our family life, the staff at Children 1st were reassuring, friendly and supportive. Going back to work and leaving your baby is a difficult decision but the staff put our minds at rest and we feel confident to leave our boy.

My daughter has attended Children 1st for just over a year and will shortly be joined by her little brother. My wife and I are extremely satisfied with the service provided and the updates given about our daughter's progress. She loves attending the nursery and has made a lot of friends as well as developing
her own personality - of which there is a lot! Her confidence has grown and she is very expressive and communicative.


My daughter enjoys the variety of activities available to her as well as the regular opportunity to dress up and attend nursery led community events.


The nursery have supported us in any requests we may have; there is a sense of an extended family and I appreciate that the staff take the time to get to know the children's family as well as the child but also maintain high levels of security, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all the children.


I have no hesitation in recommending this nursery.

My son has recently just left Children 1st @ Derby Road to go to school.
Derby Road has been supportive, helpful, caring and have shown him so much love and attention and helped make these days at nursery enjoyable, fun and he has learnt so much.
He has always been so happy and the staff are all fantastic.

My husband and I were of the view that we would have to lower our expectations of a nursery having viewed others prior to viewing this nursery. That was until we met the manager who showed us around. I was completely blown away with the facilities on offer, the outdoor space, the food choices and most
importantly the staff that work there. I also noticed how clean the nursery was compared to others and the behaviour and manner of the children impressed me along with the staff. Our son is our first and he has been attending for a month now and he has settled extremely well. He’s always happy to be left and we are updated daily with what he’s had to eat, activities he’s done and how he’s been. This is very reassuring for any parent. His key worker is great and always greet him with a smile. Our son's eating has improved as have his social skills and he’s only been there a month. The app the nursery has is also brilliant and keeps parents updated which again for any working parent is excellent.

Our son is always enthusiastic about going to nursery, which is very reassuring after the tears when he started last September. The staff are always friendly and welcoming, and we find her keyworker, and his other main carer, is genuinely interested in making sure he is happy, settled and able to develop
and learn. The daily feedback we receive is invaluable to us, and they are always willing to answer questions and are personable. We feel he gets a varied and balanced diet, are extremely pleased he only gets water to drink, which is reflected in the fact he mainly eats everything! Inside and outside the nursery seem stimulating, and a nice place to have fun and learn.

Since our little boy joined Children 1st Nursery we have seen a huge development in his confidence and social skills.
All of the staff in Bobtails have given him time to settle at his own pace - and continued to reassure me he would get there eventually. Which he has! He loves nursery now and my husband
and I are more than sure we chose the right one for him

Kate Horsley

Job Title: Nursery Manager Joined: 1995

My name is Kate Horsley and I am the Derby Road Nursery Manager. I have worked for the company for just over 29 years. I started in 1995 when I joined as a trainee nursery nurse. Over the years I completed my NVQ level 3 and then went on to do senior, deputy and management training. I am also the Nursery SENCO.


I have worked in several other Children's 1st Nurseries and have been set many challenges and given many opportunities to develop myself, constantly learning new things along the way.


As well as working full-time and running a thriving nursery I am also a full-time mum to 3 young children. Amelia is 18, Alfie is 14 and Arthur is 10 years old All of my children attend a Children's 1st Nursery and Out of School setting and love their time in them. I leave them feeling confident that the care they will get is as good as what I can provide for them.


I have only ever worked for Children 1st after joining when I left School. There has never been a reason for me to look elsewhere. I have always been more than satisfied with my own professional development and very happy in my job. I look forward to growing further within Children 1st and learning new skills which will help my team and I “Lead the Way & Shape the Future”
