Due to a hospital stay and ill health I have had to put my son into nursery for lots of extra days and the staff have all been amazing at helping him cope. Giving him extra attention and cuddles when he needed it and making sure they eased my worries by reporting back how he had been each day. My son
has some special needs and the nursery have helped to apply for funding to get him some extra support. They have kept me informed and gone through the completed forms, asking for my opinion. The staff always greet me and my son with such warmth and have really taken the time to get to know him and his quirky little ways. They always point out all the great things he can do and make me feel proud of him and what he has achieved. He loves this nursery and feels 100% safe there - I am so glad I found Children 1st.

My daughter has been going to Children 1st @ Derby Road for over a year now. All staff in baby's, bobtails and peter rabbits are always happy to help and advise with what my daughter needs while she's at nursery. They're all very friendly and my daughter seems settled when at nursery.

My daughter is very happy at nursery and has a great relationship with her keyworkers who are kind, caring, helpful and fun. My daughter has developed in many ways since joining Children 1st at 10 months old.
This is a lovely clean nursery with a great range of outdoor play areas and activities for
children of all ages.
I have every confidence in her care, the staff are attentive and the updates, both in her daily diary and on Eylog are informative.
I feel relaxed knowing that my daughter is in safe hands.

We are sadly moving home and have struggled to find another nursery closer to home that is at the same standard as Children 1st @ Derby Road. I literally can’t praise this nursery enough. All the staff are very friendly and caring, whilst maintaining professionalism at all times. The facilities are
very good and constantly evolving to adapt to the learning and development of the children. My little girl leaves each night with a snack for the journey home which is a lifesaver for the long commute we have!
It is always been a clean, warm and friendly atmosphere. The manager and deputy managers are also very good and approachable. They have a good knowledge of all the children on site and their development plans. The staff use an EY log which is a brilliant tool in seeing how your child is developing and capturing the milestones that we miss whilst she is at nursery. We are very sad to leave and we wish we could keep our little girl there as it has contributed to a huge part of our development!

At a stressful time in our family life, the staff at Children 1st were reassuring, friendly and supportive. Going back to work and leaving your baby is a difficult decision but the staff put our minds at rest and we feel confident to leave our boy.

My daughter has attended Children 1st for just over a year and will shortly be joined by her little brother. My wife and I are extremely satisfied with the service provided and the updates given about our daughter's progress. She loves attending the nursery and has made a lot of friends as well as developing
her own personality - of which there is a lot! Her confidence has grown and she is very expressive and communicative.

My daughter enjoys the variety of activities available to her as well as the regular opportunity to dress up and attend nursery led community events.

The nursery have supported us in any requests we may have; there is a sense of an extended family and I appreciate that the staff take the time to get to know the children's family as well as the child but also maintain high levels of security, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all the children.

I have no hesitation in recommending this nursery.

My son has recently just left Children 1st @ Derby Road to go to school.
Derby Road has been supportive, helpful, caring and have shown him so much love and attention and helped make these days at nursery enjoyable, fun and he has learnt so much.
He has always been so happy and the staff are all fantastic.

My husband and I were of the view that we would have to lower our expectations of a nursery having viewed others prior to viewing this nursery. That was until we met the manager who showed us around. I was completely blown away with the facilities on offer, the outdoor space, the food choices and most
importantly the staff that work there. I also noticed how clean the nursery was compared to others and the behaviour and manner of the children impressed me along with the staff. Our son is our first and he has been attending for a month now and he has settled extremely well. He’s always happy to be left and we are updated daily with what he’s had to eat, activities he’s done and how he’s been. This is very reassuring for any parent. His key worker is great and always greet him with a smile. Our son's eating has improved as have his social skills and he’s only been there a month. The app the nursery has is also brilliant and keeps parents updated which again for any working parent is excellent.

Our son is always enthusiastic about going to nursery, which is very reassuring after the tears when he started last September. The staff are always friendly and welcoming, and we find her keyworker, and his other main carer, is genuinely interested in making sure he is happy, settled and able to develop
and learn. The daily feedback we receive is invaluable to us, and they are always willing to answer questions and are personable. We feel he gets a varied and balanced diet, are extremely pleased he only gets water to drink, which is reflected in the fact he mainly eats everything! Inside and outside the nursery seem stimulating, and a nice place to have fun and learn.

Since our little boy joined Children 1st Nursery we have seen a huge development in his confidence and social skills.
All of the staff in Bobtails have given him time to settle at his own pace - and continued to reassure me he would get there eventually. Which he has! He loves nursery now and my husband
and I are more than sure we chose the right one for him

My little one is such a headache to me, she won't go to anyone else. I was restless for two years before I took my little one here. Children's 1st really created a miracle to make my little one stay happy. She is such an alert baby. She must have felt secure and loved in here! Really appreciate Children's
1st and highly recommend it to parents.

A lovely nursery with lovely staff. My daughter enjoys going to nursery, she’s always made relationships with staff and key workers showing their level of care and love for her. My daughter has gained excellent social skills and is learning new things all the time! Her baby sister will be starting nursery
soon, and I know she will have as much fun as her big sister did throughout the nursery!
I must say my daughter always tells me about her dinner when I collect her too! She loves her meals provided by the lovely cook ??

My son has been here since he was 6 months old. Being an only child and me a first time Mum they are always very supportive. My son has grown to be great with others (well most the time). They always update me on the good and bad. The staff are friendly and loving. You see where all your payments go.
Freshly cooked meals, excellent play areas and learning plans. I’m going to be very sad when he has to leave. I know my child is getting the beat care when he is not with me.

My partner and I have been extremely impressed with the quality of staff and facilities at Children 1st @ Derby Road since our daughter started attending a year ago and is now attending full time. We have also recommended Children 1st @ Derby Road to at least two other couples in the area who now have
their children attending. We have found all members of staff to be courteous, professional and always make time to give feedback on our daughters day and always make our daughter feel special. We will definitely continue to recommend their services.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.897)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.897) out of 10 for Children 1st Derby Road Nursery School is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 44 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 44 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.897 for Children 1st Derby Road Nursery School is calculated as follows: ( (477 Excellents x 5) + (44 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 526 Ratings = 4.897
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Children 1st Derby Road Nursery School is based on 44 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 143 number of registered child places is 28.6, which has been reached with 44 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Kate Horsley

Job Title: Nursery Manager Joined: 1995

My name is Kate Horsley and I am the Derby Road Nursery Manager. I have worked for the company for just over 29 years. I started in 1995 when I joined as a trainee nursery nurse. Over the years I completed my NVQ level 3 and then went on to do senior, deputy and management training. I am also the Nursery SENCO.

I have worked in several other Children's 1st Nurseries and have been set many challenges and given many opportunities to develop myself, constantly learning new things along the way.

As well as working full-time and running a thriving nursery I am also a full-time mum to 3 young children. Amelia is 18, Alfie is 14 and Arthur is 10 years old All of my children attend a Children's 1st Nursery and Out of School setting and love their time in them. I leave them feeling confident that the care they will get is as good as what I can provide for them.

I have only ever worked for Children 1st after joining when I left School. There has never been a reason for me to look elsewhere. I have always been more than satisfied with my own professional development and very happy in my job. I look forward to growing further within Children 1st and learning new skills which will help my team and I “Lead the Way & Shape the Future”
