My child has settled in so well in this nursery. The expertise, professionalism and caring nature of the staff in the ladybird room is really impressive. I feel very confident that my child is cared for and stimulated and that they always have his needs in mind. The key worker is incredible at her job and I completely trust her and she is well supported by others. They always think of creative ideas to do with the children - from smelling different plants and flowers to doing vegetable planting, singing and stories. I do get an impression that communication between management and staff isn't always ideal, there are times when I think the expertise of the staff isn't respected as it should. But the management team do communicate well with parents and are always on hand to answer queries and concerns.

By and large, I would be likely to recommend, although with some issues. Pros - beautiful, helpful, welcoming installations. Staff try hard and are kind, it's very close and convenient to the University of Sussex. Cons - staff turnover rate is way too high, need to improve staff satisfaction if that is what it will take to achieve greater stability.
Some staff clearly a bit stressed and highly strung.

Gemma Allardyce, Head of Central Operations at The Co-operative Childcare Sussex University Nursery responded to this review on 21 Feb 2017:

Thank you for your comments and your recommendation. As well as regular one to ones with all colleagues and annual reviews, we formally measure our Colleague Engagement every year by way of an anonymous survey where every colleague has an opportunity to have their say and make recommendations for things that might improve satisfaction. The results are collated externally and in 2016, 94% of colleagues from the Sussex nursery took part in the survey achieving a platinum score of 92 (out of 100). Colleague retention remains a key objective for us and we do all we can in our power to retain good people.

Diet and food are very important for my child, so it was great to know there was a chef on site every day preparing fresh healthy meals. The staff are amazing and very committed to their jobs which are great to see when you are trusting someone with your baby/toddler. At the end of the days, it's so great to be handed a day sheet. The nursery is also very good at notifying parents of any problems, such as rashes and bumps. The nursery is also very accommodating of any requests you have for your child in regards to diet etc. My daughter is often doing fun and mentally stimulating activities. I believe she is learning a lot mentally and physically, which is great to see that the nursery is not just a place to leave my child for her to be looked after while I am at work but rather a fun filled place with great learning opportunities. I would absolutely recommend this nursery - initially, I had a nanny, however, even that does not compare to how fantastic this nursery is.

Our daughter always came home very happy and content. She seemed to very much enjoy her time in the nursery and is looking forward to attending again. It seemed the meals were very nutritious and filling and that she felt very safe.

My son went to the Falmer Co-Op Nursery for just a few months as a pre-schooler and he absolutely flourished there.
The venue is brand new, light, and spacious. It is welcoming. The landscaped garden is amazing for the children to run around and play in.
The meals are balanced and healthy; children are well fed throughout the day.
Last but not least, the staff is absolutely fabulous. Each individual is approachable, caring, dynamic and engaging. Under their encouragement and care, my somewhat shy little boy really came out of his shell. He learnt lots of new skills, had a great deal of fun, and generally grew more social and more confident.
At first, he didn't want to go at all, but in the end, he wanted to go every day, weekends included!
As a parent, I felt confident that my son was well looked after and cared for by professional and committed people who showed him respect, who continuously encouraged him, and made his days there so much fun.

The team we friendly and helpful and showed genuine care for our son. They communicated with us frequently with their observations of his development and interests when at nursery. The rooms were very well equipped and thoughtfully arranged to provide the perfect play environment.
I would highly recommend this nursery to any of my friends.

Our experience was fantastic! My daughter was very happy and always willing to come back. We are not joining the nursery anymore as we moved abroad, but we would be if we would have stayed in Brighton. I totally recommend it.

My little girl loves going to nursery. She has a lovely bond with her key person. The facilities, particularly the outdoors, are amazing. There's also a good range of food for her to try. I think it benefits her social skills and learning to be st nursery.

Staff were generally good but management appalling, indicated by a number of staff and parents choosing to leave nursery at this time. No qualified teacher in pre-school for a long period and no learning outcomes.

My little girl has been at this nursery since she was 18 months old.
She has loved being in every single room from the caterpillars up.
The staff are friendly, helpful and very engaging.
The facilities are great and she seems to love the food and eats a lot more there than she does at home!
If I had any more children they would all be going here!

My Son attended this nursery for a year and I was extremely happy with his care. The outdoor facilities were amazing and there was a big focus on arts and craft. The food was freshly prepared and the daily reports very informative. They were exceptional when it came to any injuries.

This nursery had amazing staff, food and activities for little ones. My child progressed amazingly in her development whilst attending. Easily the best nursery in Brighton and Hove. The management were supportive and understanding and prices were very reasonable.

My son loves nursery, and enjoys playing in the large outside space. He had a baby brother a few months ago and is just realising that mummy goes back home with the baby after dropping him off and is struggling a bit with that but the staff in both butterflies and preschool have been excellent with him.

The facilities at this nursery are outstanding! The outdoor play park is phenomenal and there is even a separate, smaller one for the babies.

My little girl loves the outdoor space but also gets time to develop her learning skills.

Kind and attentive staff have looked after her well.

Returning to work with a 6 month old baby was terrifying. The idea of leaving my baby in someone else's care all day was extremely daunting. However, I couldn't have wished for lovelier carers or a better environment for my little one. The staff have been absolutely amazing at getting my baby settled into nursery life - she is now sleeping, eating and playing happily at nursery all day and seems to be really thriving. I couldn't be more grateful to the lovely staff at the nursery for helping to make this difficult transition as stress-free as possible.

My child has attended the nursery from age 20 months to age 4. He is now leaving to attend school. During his time at nursery, he has been very well looked after and loved by the staff. He has always felt safe and happy at nursery and his care has been exceptional. The environment has been very emotionally nurturing and this has been the most important aspect to me.
Some of the Co-op rules about not assisting children's artwork etc are very odd and I didn't particularly agree with this, although my child didn't notice and was largely unaffected and staff took on board my comments.

This nursery and the staff is the warmest educational institution i have ever been to. Not only is it beautiful structurally, the gardens, the foyer for relaxing, the spacious, fantastically designed classes, the nursery is beautiful psychologically. Need i say more? My only regret is that i do not have sufficient funds to have my two children in full time every week day!

My child (8months) has recently started at this nursery and I have to say the management and room staff have all been brilliant both in alleviating any anxieties I had about leaving him for the first time and is providing him with excellent care each week. He naps well, eats well and plays well and then is so exhausted by his day at nursery that he sleeps brilliantly at night too - what more could a parent ask for!
