Children 1st Toton Nursery School is situated in Toton, with easy access from Long Eaton, Chilwell and Beeston, close to local bus routes. The nursery has been beautifully refurbished throughout; with bright, open areas for babies, toddlers, Early Years and out-of-school children, from 0 – 12 years.

The friendly, enthusiastic staff are all fully trained and very experienced, and staff to children ratios are better than Ofsted recommendations, so you can be sure of the very best care for your child. They provide a fantastic nursery school environment, with the added experience that comes with a designated Early Years Practitioner, and also offer fully grant funded places for children aged 3 and 4 years.

Outside there is a fabulous garden designed to maximise the potential for outdoor play, with carefully chosen, age-specific equipment. Children are encouraged to choose their own activity with a huge variety of options both in and outside.

Staff would be delighted to show you and your child around and answer any questions you may have.

Excellent nursery. I could not ask for any more from a nursery. Has given my 5-year-old a great head start in life before going to school and my 1-year-old has now just started at the same nursery. Great staff who are friendly and always will accommodate.

The staff are very caring and professional, they really take the time to know your children.
The facilities are adapted to suit the children’s needs and development which gives our kids great freedoms and responsibilities for themselves.

A great nursery that our daughter looks forward to attending. Her key worker and colleagues have built up a really good relationship with her. The communication from the nursery is excellent and it's great seeing photos of what our daughter gets up to during the day. Would highly recommend!

We had previously used the nursery for our 2 older children who attended as 3 year olds. Unexpectedly we needed to put our 10mth old in nursery. We had to organise this very quickly and we were apprehensive never having ‘a baby’ in nursery before. The Children 1st @ Toton management and team were very
supportive and reassuring. We love the atmosphere and the variety of learning available in the baby bungalow and our little one settled immediately. I also really appreciated the time the staff took to document all my little one's needs, likes, dislikes and routine so they could make him as comfortable as possible. I can’t recommend this nursery highly enough. The staff are amazing and most importantly our little one is very happy, safe and always has a brilliant time. I would recommend any parent to go and visit and see how you feel about it for yourself.

My son absolutely loves this nursery, sometimes so much I don't even get a "goodbye" when dropping him off.
The staff are friendly, happy and always show a genuine interest in him.
The daily diaries showing his activities for the day, food and nappies is really handy too. I can't praise this nursery
enough, we will be moving further away soon and I refuse to find a nursery closer to us. They are absolutely brilliant!

Fantastic nursery, our daughter continues to come home very happy every day and is always happy to return and excited to see her carers. We get daily interaction with the staff including photos of what she has been up to and are very happy with her development.

Over the winter months, my child has had terrible skin with no official diagnosis or answers. Everyone has been very understanding and helped immensely with keeping track of what was happening and changing dietary requirements several times. I can understand that this must be tricky especially as this
would keep changing as we had been given different information from doctors and health visitors. The understanding and patience from the nursery made me feel that I wasn't being a nuisance and my daughters best interests were important. A certain member of staff in particular, went above and beyond to help my daughter and it was highly appreciated.

Fantastic nursery! My son loves coming to nursery and so did my daughter when she was his age. The staff are always kind and friendly when spoken to and they are willing to help if we have any concerns. I love how we can receive photos of what my son has done each week and see his development progress.
It is so nice to hear how good he is at nursery! It is useful to have the online diaries, so we can have a quick look at what he has done that day. Continue with the brilliant job that you are all doing at Children 1st @ Toton!

My child loves coming to nursery. She will smile when I pull up into the car park. We are greeted with a smiley face when dropping her off at the door and she will happily go inside. I love how I receive pictures of the different activities she is doing each week and I know where she is at with her
development. The daily diaries are very useful so I can see what she has eaten, her nappies and a little bit of what she does each day. The staff are very kind, friendly and happy and I feel I can approach them about anything.

I couldn’t recommend Children 1st enough. My little boy always comes home happy and smiling. They always provide good meals and keep you up to date with what your child has been doing that day. All of that’s staff are always friendly on drop off and pick up.

Children 1st @ Toton is an amazing nursery. It feels like we are leaving our little boy with family when we drop him off. The staff are all so kind and caring, including the receptionist. They recognise each child's needs and go out of their way to encourage and support them. We had the option of moving
to the school nursery but we are so happy with the level of care and development, we chose not to.

My son attends the nursery and always seems happy to go when collected at the front door. I’ve always been contacted if he is unwell or in need of medication, so I feel he is very safe and cared for. The staff are always doing learning activities with him too, which I like.

They always go the extra mile and really are excellent. Their opening hours are longer than the competition too, allowing us a greater degree of flexibility as a working couple. The food seems great, and our son always comes back with lovely stories about friends and staff.

My son was an introvert before, but since he entered this school, he has become a lot more cheerful and happy. The staff are also very helpful, both the place and the environment are bright and clean. I really like and recommend it here.

Absolutely amazing staff, they are all so friendly and have been amazing with our child. We have never had any issues with our child since the day he started back in May 2021. Our child is very quiet and shy, so we were very worried when he first started, but the team at the nursery made it all so easy
for us.

Katie Smeeton

Job Title: Nursery Manager Joined: 2008

Hello, my name is Katie Smeeton and I joined Children 1st in 2008. I began my childcare journey as an apprentice, where I completed my Level 3 qualification in Childcare. During my training, I gained so much knowledge and understanding of early years education, which shaped my passion for the profession.


I’ve had the opportunity to work across three of our sites, developing my skills and experiences along the way. This journey has led me to my current role as Nursery Manager.


I hold a Level 3 in Childcare, alongside DSL training and First Aid in the Workplace.


I am especially passionate about working with Under 2’s and supporting their early learning and development. I love welcoming new families into the nursery, and as a manager, I’m able to build those important relationships from the very first phone call or visit, starting strong parent partnerships.


I take pride in supporting families and am passionate about maintaining positive, healthy relationships with them throughout their nursery journey.

Hello, my name is Laura Harrison and I began my journey with Children 1st in 2007. I started as a Level 3 Early Years Educator after completing my qualification at college, but it’s throughout my time here that I’ve gained the most valuable experience and knowledge.


Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work in three different nurseries, developing my skills and progressing from Senior to Deputy, and now to my current role as Nursery Manager.


I hold a Level 3 qualification in Childcare, along with DSL and Paediatric First Aid certificates. What I love most about my role is building strong relationships with families, supporting them through those important early stages of nursery life, and watching their children grow in confidence, curiosity, and independence.


I’m passionate about providing high-quality care and creating a warm, welcoming environment where every family’s nursery experience is a positive one.
