Children 1st Toton Nursery School is situated in Toton, with easy access from Long Eaton, Chilwell and Beeston, close to local bus routes. The nursery has been beautifully refurbished throughout; with bright, open areas for babies, toddlers, Early Years and out-of-school children, from 0 – 12 years.

The friendly, enthusiastic staff are all fully trained and very experienced, and staff to children ratios are better than Ofsted recommendations, so you can be sure of the very best care for your child. They provide a fantastic nursery school environment, with the added experience that comes with a designated Early Years Practitioner, and also offer fully grant funded places for children aged 3 and 4 years.

Outside there is a fabulous garden designed to maximise the potential for outdoor play, with carefully chosen, age-specific equipment. Children are encouraged to choose their own activity with a huge variety of options both in and outside.

My daughter loves the nursery and the staff, they are so loving and caring towards her. It makes me so happy to be at work knowing she is so well looked after with people she trusts. She learns new things everyday and comes home super happy, thank you to the Bobtails room.

We have been taking our girls here since September 2023 and have experienced no issues. The staff are supportive, the space for the children and the activities are perfect for them, they have a range of foods and always explain clearly about their day.

The nursery is simply amazing. They show true care for all children. My eldest started at the bungalow at one year old and stayed until she started school this September. And now my youngest is in the bungalow. Both girls love/loved nursery and wanted to go every day of the week. It makes going to work
a little easier knowing the girls are with people who care and know them inside out. I can't thank the staff enough or recommend them enough.

I cannot recommend Children 1st highly enough, my son goes to the one on Banks Road in Toton. He comes home happy, clean and always looks like he has had the best day. I find the nursery attentive, understanding and very caring towards my son, perfect when you find it hard to leave them anyway. They
have been super supportive with his potty training, which mirrored what we were doing at home with him, resulting in a quick transition from nappies to pants at just 2 years old. He eats well and is always learning and having fun with his friends. He has been at this nursery since he was 10 months old and he is now 28 months.

Fantastic level of care provided to the children in all age groups. My daughter has attended for the last two years and has made some wonderful friendships with many of the ladies, not just her own key workers. All the staff make you feel very welcome and communication is fantastic. Can't fault this
nursery, we have been very well looked after. Special mention to my daughter's key workers in the Peter Rabbits' room.

Children 1st @ Toton has been absolutely outstanding in their care of my children, their communication, support, organisation, delicious food, activities and provision for the children and so much more. Best nursery I have ever experienced, I wish I had sent my first two. The standard is exemplary in every single way. I’ve never once had even the slightest issue with anything. Absolutely fantastic nursery! Staff are all so friendly and are excellent at their job. I feel really confident leaving my children here knowing they are safe and cared for by the best staff who clearly love working with the children. I'm really sad that one of my boys will be leaving here to go to
school soon as the staff in the pre-school room are so nurturing and friendly - I really couldn't ask for a better place to send my sons. The graduation performance was so well organised and was such a lovely event so thank you to the staff for organising this! Honestly, you do not get this experience everywhere! Do not hesitate if you are thinking of sending your children here!

You couldn’t wish for a better nursery for your child! My little boy has been going here since he was 2 and has been in a few different rooms during his time there and each one has been just amazing. The staff are exceptional, caring for the kids so well and being so kind and fun for them. Special shoutouts
to two members of staff who our son has just adored his time with, and another member of staff who runs the early years team so well and works so hard. The management team are also brilliant, nothing is ever too much trouble. Just a five-star nursery all over!

We’ve had children at Children 1st @ Toton Day Nursery for five years now and I honestly can’t recommend it enough. We’ve been beyond happy with every stage of nursery, from the baby room up to early years. The staff are honestly amazing and both my little ones have loved it. My youngest is due to leave
this summer and we’ll be sad to leave the nursery. The staff go above and beyond for the children and have made their first steps in education a fun and memorable experience. 5/5!

Amazing nursery, I recommend it to so many people! The staff are friendly, professional and approachable, they give great feedback each day. The rooms are kept clean and the resources are great.
Recently, we've attended Father's Day stay and play in the baby unit and also graduation in the preschool
room. The graduation ceremony was wonderful and I'm sure there wasn't a dry eye in the house (parents and staff!) Each child was provided with a goodie bag of photo memories along with handmade keepsakes which were so thoughtful and will be treasured.
We are welcomed every morning with happy faces and both of my daughters love spending their days at nursery.
Thank you to all of the staff who work so hard to make it an amazing and happy place.

A fantastic nursery - my daughter has been very happy here over the years. The staff work hard to make it an interactive, fun, developmental and caring setting!
Each of my daughter's key workers has been exceptional, taking the time and energy to get to know her and helping her to grow! One, in particular,
in early years will have a special place in her memories!

We have had such a positive experience with this nursery. My daughter is in the baby room and the staff have made us all feel so welcome. Everyone is just so friendly and happy! My daughter settled in really quickly and I love seeing pictures and videos of her smiling and babbling away. I know she is
well looked after and I feel comfortable leaving her there. We had a look at a number of nurseries before deciding on this one and it really was the best decision we made.

An all-round positive experience. Never had any problems.
They were really accommodating when my little one started due to me finding a new job and unsure of start dates etc.
It's always clean, I'm impressed with the facilities for all age groups.

Katie Smeeton

Job Title: Nursery Manager Joined: 2008

Hello, my name is Katie Smeeton and I joined Children 1st in 2008. I began my childcare journey as an apprentice, where I completed my Level 3 qualification in Childcare. During my training, I gained so much knowledge and understanding of early years education, which shaped my passion for the profession.


I’ve had the opportunity to work across three of our sites, developing my skills and experiences along the way. This journey has led me to my current role as Nursery Manager.


I hold a Level 3 in Childcare, alongside DSL training and First Aid in the Workplace.


I am especially passionate about working with Under 2’s and supporting their early learning and development. I love welcoming new families into the nursery, and as a manager, I’m able to build those important relationships from the very first phone call or visit, starting strong parent partnerships.


I take pride in supporting families and am passionate about maintaining positive, healthy relationships with them throughout their nursery journey.

Hello, my name is Laura Harrison and I began my journey with Children 1st in 2007. I started as a Level 3 Early Years Educator after completing my qualification at college, but it’s throughout my time here that I’ve gained the most valuable experience and knowledge.


Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work in three different nurseries, developing my skills and progressing from Senior to Deputy, and now to my current role as Nursery Manager.


I hold a Level 3 qualification in Childcare, along with DSL and Paediatric First Aid certificates. What I love most about my role is building strong relationships with families, supporting them through those important early stages of nursery life, and watching their children grow in confidence, curiosity, and independence.


I’m passionate about providing high-quality care and creating a warm, welcoming environment where every family’s nursery experience is a positive one.
