Children 1st Toton Nursery School is situated in Toton, with easy access from Long Eaton, Chilwell and Beeston, close to local bus routes. The nursery has been beautifully refurbished throughout; with bright, open areas for babies, toddlers, Early Years and out-of-school children, from 0 – 12 years.

The friendly, enthusiastic staff are all fully trained and very experienced, and staff to children ratios are better than Ofsted recommendations, so you can be sure of the very best care for your child. They provide a fantastic nursery school environment, with the added experience that comes with a designated Early Years Practitioner, and also offer fully grant funded places for children aged 3 and 4 years.

Outside there is a fabulous garden designed to maximise the potential for outdoor play, with carefully chosen, age-specific equipment. Children are encouraged to choose their own activity with a huge variety of options both in and outside.

My little one goes to children 1st in Toton and I can’t even begin to describe how much he loves being there. I love that I get updates on what my baby is doing during the day when I’m not with him, I also got the most beautiful handmade Christmas gifts from my baby made by the staff and my baby, they
were so lovely they made me cry when I received them! Every day I drop my baby off he gladly goes straight into the staff members arms and waves me goodbye. I also like that my baby is well fed and gets a varied diet of nutritional foods! I can’t thank the staff enough for the love and care they provide my son with. On special days and dates the nursery always go the extra mile such as birthdays, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day.
Just want to say a big thank you and I fully recommend this daycare for your child.

The nursery has options for early drop-off at a cheap rate. The staff are friendly. The nursery has an electronic check-in and check-out system, as well as an app to keep parents updated. My son is very happy here.

Staff at all stages have been wonderful. My son is absolutely thriving here and I never worry about leaving him. They are fantastic! A change in room really unsettled him and they made a lot of effort to help him, it was very much appreciated.

The nursery offers settling-in sessions for new children. Children are assigned a key worker and are given a bag and a day book to take home with updates about food, toileting, sleeps, etc. Varied meals are prepared onsite. The staff are friendly and caring. There are handovers every day and regular
parent’s evenings. The nursery space itself is clean and there are lots of toys and resources. Everything is in good working order and is well maintained. There is a big outdoor space with a whole host of toys and the children go outside in all weathers. They do all kinds of activities with the children, including baking. There are quite a lot of dress-up days, so brace yourself for that! There is a parent app, where weekly observations of your child’s development are uploaded, along with pictures of the activity they are completing. Parents are given a key fob to gain access to the nursery and electronically sign in and out. There is a home-from-home feel and genuine care here for all.

A fabulous nursery! We always speak highly of Children 1st Toton. Both our girls have a great time here. Everyone is so friendly, and super thorough with feedback and we particularly find this nursery very creative in the tasks they set the children. Overall super happy here!

I can’t speak highly enough of this fantastic nursery. They care for the children like they were their own. They do such lovely presents and gifts that the children have made for Christmas, it really adds something special that they have taken time to do that. I don’t think they realise how lovely that
is for the parents. Nothing is too much trouble and I always fell that I am a individual parent as is my child rather than just a number. This is my second child going though Children 1st Toton and I wouldn’t hesitate to to recommend other parents to them (I have a few that are already there after the recommendation). Thank you for all you do for not only the kids but the parents and carers too.

Children’s 1st Toton are simply amazing! My children absolutely love going. The love and attention that goes into caring and educating the children is exceptional.

The staff are lovely and attentive, they do various activities with the children and it’s nice that the kids have the opportunity for different experiences such as meeting the firemen, understanding the recycling process, baking bread. I loved the apple story for teaching the children the importance
of being kind. The team went above and beyond to deliver a great nativity play and I can see the growth, development and confidence within my child.

I've had 2 children attending the nursery and they both really enjoyed it. Its staff is very friendly, always listens to us (i.e. in terms of nap times or nap length etc) and the teaching in the older groups is really good too. The baby unit is so lovely and I like how there are covered outdoor spaces
so whatever the weather, the kids can go out.

The staff have been so supportive of myself and my daughter whilst going through some health issues this year. The manager rang to see how my daughter was the day after she had a medical procedure. Her keyworker has been great, keeping me and the staff up to date on any changes or concerns. I feel the
communication throughout the nursery is fantastic, all staff are fully aware of my daughter's condition. My daughter is very happy and content going to this nursery, would highly recommend it.

My youngest child is currently at Children 1st Toton and he has been attending here for a while now. The staff here are nurturing and caring, they have an amazing curriculum in place, offering the children brilliant experiences throughout their setting. Both my eldest and youngest children have absolutely
loved their nursery experience and are both “school-ready” by the time they leave.
They are a wonderful team of staff and I cannot sing their praises enough. I would recommend Children 1st Toton in a heartbeat!

Lovely educational nursery my daughter is 3 and has been here since 1.5 years old she loves being at Children 1st Toton. She has a great bond with all staff and made lovely friends but has also come on leaps and bounds since starting, brilliant nursery, would highly recommend it to anyone!

We are very happy with Children 1st. All the staff are polite and obviously care a lot about the children. I always feel welcome and the facilities are clean and age-appropriate. Office staff are polite and extremely helpful. Activities are well planned and you can clearly see the learning intentions
while still following children’s interests. I feel that my daughter is well cared for and the staff have helped her settle into nursery very well.

Lovely preschool, the staff plan some wonderful activities for the children such as making post boxes and baking bread and even gave him a lovely welcome booklet. My son seems very happy attending Children 1st Toton.

My three-and-a-half-year-old son has thrived beautifully under the care of the nursery's dedicated staff. I'm constantly amazed at the new skills he's picking up and it's clear that the team is not only attentive but also highly skilled in fostering individual growth. Their hands-on approach has been

Katie Smeeton

Job Title: Nursery Manager Joined: 2008

Hello, my name is Katie Smeeton and I joined Children 1st in 2008. I began my childcare journey as an apprentice, where I completed my Level 3 qualification in Childcare. During my training, I gained so much knowledge and understanding of early years education, which shaped my passion for the profession.


I’ve had the opportunity to work across three of our sites, developing my skills and experiences along the way. This journey has led me to my current role as Nursery Manager.


I hold a Level 3 in Childcare, alongside DSL training and First Aid in the Workplace.


I am especially passionate about working with Under 2’s and supporting their early learning and development. I love welcoming new families into the nursery, and as a manager, I’m able to build those important relationships from the very first phone call or visit, starting strong parent partnerships.


I take pride in supporting families and am passionate about maintaining positive, healthy relationships with them throughout their nursery journey.

Hello, my name is Laura Harrison and I began my journey with Children 1st in 2007. I started as a Level 3 Early Years Educator after completing my qualification at college, but it’s throughout my time here that I’ve gained the most valuable experience and knowledge.


Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work in three different nurseries, developing my skills and progressing from Senior to Deputy, and now to my current role as Nursery Manager.


I hold a Level 3 qualification in Childcare, along with DSL and Paediatric First Aid certificates. What I love most about my role is building strong relationships with families, supporting them through those important early stages of nursery life, and watching their children grow in confidence, curiosity, and independence.


I’m passionate about providing high-quality care and creating a warm, welcoming environment where every family’s nursery experience is a positive one.
