  • Bright Horizons West Hampstead Station Day Nursery and Preschool, London
Bright Horizons West Hampstead Station Day Nursery and Preschool is a beautiful Victorian villa, renovated to a high standard, designed to bring the outdoors in. The big windows maximise the feeling of light and space within the building.

Unlike some London nurseries, the nursery has a large garden at the rear where children can play sports, ride bikes on a cycling track with traffic lights and enjoy sensory experiences.

The nursery facilities are well-maintained and clean, creating a safe and hygienic environment for the children. The rooms are bright and inviting, with a variety of age-appropriate toys, books and learning materials available. Children also benefit from dedicated areas for different activities, including quiet reading corners, creative play zones, and outdoor play spaces. The nursery follows a structured curriculum that is designed to promote holistic development in the children, with the staff engaging the children in various educational activities, such as storytelling, arts and crafts and group play.

With a dedicated team of specialist teachers in the studios who are supernumerary to all the wonderful nursery mentors, children are nurtured and looked after as unique and individual children, ensuring that they bring out the best in each and every one and help them to discover and maximise the potential of their talents while also developing confidence in all areas.

Parents are regularly updated on their child's progress, including daily reports and parent-teacher meetings. This open line of communication helps parents stay involved in their child's development and ensures that any concerns or questions are addressed promptly.

The nursery received a rating of 'Good' by Ofsted in August 2022.

Our son has been at this wonderful nursery for 9 months and he is now 3.5 years old! The staff are caring and enthusiastic - and the facilities are beautiful. He loves the friends he has made over the years - both other children and staff members. They provide perfect experiences for each age - from
yoga to art class, to French and now learning to count, read and write! Highly recommend.

This nursery is very good. The staff is caring and try very hard to provide an outstanding environment for the children. I have felt comfortable leaving my child in the care of this nursery!

The settling in period for my daughter did not go as planned as the lady looking after her left straight after the settling. No one informed me of this situation previously and I only discovered it on a Friday evening. In general, the care is good but the staff are quite reactive and you always need
to ask questions. For example, you need to ask to have your child's review or in general just to know if your child is progressing. They are quite good at keeping your current child routine and she seems to enjoy the playtime there.

I just wanted to take a minute to recognise all the hard work the teachers and support staff in pre-school put into the safety, care and teaching of my daughter.

My daughter has benefitted greatly and I'm fully confident that her years attending Active Learning has prepared her for the next stage

of school.

Excellent pre-school! My daughter who attends full time has blossomed under the care and supervision of the firm, kind, knowledgeable staff. My daughter loves the range of activities (sport, dance, French, art, yoga and more) and has a real bond with her outstanding key person. The home-school partnership
is really emphasised and we truly appreciated the support in my daughter's potty training and "picky eater" phase. My husband and I feel confident that our daughter will be well-prepared for "big school" next year, thanks to her experience at Active Learning, West Hampstead.

Our son has been going to this nursery for six months and it's been good overall. Permanent staff are great, but I do agree that there is a high turnover of people and there seem to be new faces about all the time. Not sure the reason why there is high turnover, but there is clearly an issue underlying
there. Apart from that, it's been a great experience overall, people are friendly and they do care well for the children there.

Good nursery with attentive staff that really care for the growth and well being of our son.
We had a period with a lot of staff turnover but this seems to have settled down now to allow the kids some continuity.

Two members of staff in particular are doing a fantastic job in the toddler room and we are glad that another member of staff has also joined the room.
However, we are very concerned that for months there has been a lack of consistency of other staff in the room.

Practically every day there are

different people there when we pick up our son.
He is still very young and needs consistency of care, which is not currently being provided.
We are concerned that despite this being an issue for months, there have been no appointments of other permanent staff for this room.

Good permanent staff, however too many temporary personnel. Management needs to review the reason why staff are leaving and address this matter at the earliest. With regards to food, I believe that carbs (i.e pasta) need to be given less and replaced with more vegetables.

I have 2 children at the nursery, one at pre-school and the other at the toddler group.
While I'm happy with the pre-school, and can only say good things about the permanent staff in both rooms, I will not recommend this nursery because of the management.
1. There have been frequent management changes
at this nursery in the last 2.5 years since my first child joined. These frequent management changes cause staff members to leave and give a sense of lack of stability to the place.
2. The current manager, who replaced one of the best managers this nursery had, has made some poor changes:
- she turned one of the toddler rooms to an office for herself, at the expense of the children.
- as a result, there's a huge toddler classroom instead of 2 separate, intimate rooms, which this age group desperately needs.
- too many agency staff are brought in, and there's a new face in the room almost every day.
- permanent staff don't have enough time to dedicate to each child as a result.

The most important factor in recommending this nursery is that the staff is really caring and look after the child in a very loving fashion. In addition, the facilities are great with a large outside space.

Pros:
Our child is well looked after and we feel she's in a safe environment.
Staff and management are very kind and personable.

Cons:
Rooms, toys & equipment need a refurbishment as they look quite old.
The current room gives off a smell which could be from an old rug that needs replacing.
Webcam

feature is great but the resolution is too low to be able to see much.

We are a family from Brazil, living for one year in London. We chose the nursery because they seemed the best option in the neighbourhood, and we were right.
Since the beginning, they treated our 3-year-old son with care and attention, which made him learn English and adapt very quickly. We are very
happy with his learning and adaptation since then, and he loves the school - always commenting about his teachers, who have been doing an incredible job.

Our daughter has been at Active Learning West Hampstead for 6 months and really enjoys it. The staff are fantastic and the range of activities they do are brilliant. They have taken time and care to get to know her and she looks forward to going. Her independence and confidence have really grown
since she has started and all the staff both teachers and management know her well. I would thoroughly recommend the nursery to anyone who was considering it.

My daughter first attended this nursery when she was 8m old. The staff in the baby room helped her settle very quickly and over the last 7m she has grown in confidence and learnt so much. She is now in a new room (1-2year olds) and could not be happier. She eats well, sleeps well and learns so much.
The staff support and care for her so well, this is an excellent nursery.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.090)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.090) out of 10 for Bright Horizons West Hampstead Station Day Nursery and Preschool is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.916 for Bright Horizons West Hampstead Station Day Nursery and Preschool is calculated as follows: ( (98 Excellents x 5) + (9 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 107 Ratings = 4.916
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.174 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Bright Horizons West Hampstead Station Day Nursery and Preschool is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 164 number of registered child places is 32.8. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 32.8 = 0.274
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
