Bright Horizons West Hampstead Station Day Nursery and Preschool is a beautiful Victorian villa, renovated to a high standard, designed to bring the outdoors in. The big windows maximise the feeling of light and space within the building.

Unlike some London nurseries, the nursery has a large garden at the rear where children can play sports, ride bikes on a cycling track with traffic lights and enjoy sensory experiences.

The nursery facilities are well-maintained and clean, creating a safe and hygienic environment for the children. The rooms are bright and inviting, with a variety of age-appropriate toys, books and learning materials available. Children also benefit from dedicated areas for different activities, including quiet reading corners, creative play zones, and outdoor play spaces. The nursery follows a structured curriculum that is designed to promote holistic development in the children, with the staff engaging the children in various educational activities, such as storytelling, arts and crafts and group play.

With a dedicated team of specialist teachers in the studios who are supernumerary to all the wonderful nursery mentors, children are nurtured and looked after as unique and individual children, ensuring that they bring out the best in each and every one and help them to discover and maximise the potential of their talents while also developing confidence in all areas.

Parents are regularly updated on their child's progress, including daily reports and parent-teacher meetings. This open line of communication helps parents stay involved in their child's development and ensures that any concerns or questions are addressed promptly.

The nursery received a rating of 'Good' by Ofsted in August 2022.

I find Bright Horizons, West Hampstead to be a lovely environment for my daughter and I can see she is genuinely happy. She is always happy to see the staff and her friends. They do lots of activities like painting, learning, role play and outdoor activity. I like the updates on the app and I find that
the team are always friendly and very engaged with my child. I like the emphasis on learning about other cultures and religions too. There were some issues earlier in the year, which seemed to be down to staff shortages with covid, but when this was raised, it was dealt with and there was a strong improvement as a result, which is positive. Overall, very happy. It is a shame there is no sibling discount, but I understand this is a policy set in place for some time. Would definitely recommend.

We joined this nursery in December and the teachers and everyone has been wonderful. My daughter adjusted very quickly and now enjoys going there every day! The food is great and the room/garden is very spacious.

A lovely nursery that have always taken great care of my son and daughter.
I send my kids there five days a week and they have developed incredibly since they have started. The staff are very friendly and always keep us updated on what they have been achieving.

My daughter had attended this nursery since the age of two and a half years. I did worry how she would settle but was delighted at her response to the warm environment. She has made many new friends there and had flourished. She has also made strong relationships with the staff. Since lockdown, the
parents have not been allowed in the building (understandably) and I do miss seeing my daughter interact and having such fun. But I’m grateful the nursery remained open. We have had a very positive experience and I’m glad we chose this nursery. I feel my daughter has had an excellent early years start and we will both be sad to leave for school. Thank you Bright Horizons.

The nursery settled my child very well despite the short period till he was comfortable and enjoyed his time at nursery. He remembers the name of his primary carer very fondly. It was very sweet of the staff to make a farewell card for him which was most appreciated. Many thanks!

Both my son (3) and daughter (7) attended West Hampstead Station Bright Horizons since they were 6 months old. The staff have always been professional and caring. It’s clear the teaching staff adore the children and work hard to develop and nourish them. Both my children enjoyed their time at the nursery,
evidenced by their daily smiles at drop off and collection. The management team have been equally excellent, welcoming and professional and handle changes well (eg. Covid and staff changes). Although the nursery is more expensive than some others in the area, I have never once regretted the decision to send both my children or contemplated another setting during their Early Learning stages. I would definitely recommend this nursery to others.

Both my kids have been at the nursery for this year. There has been a management change since a year ago, that tremendously improved our experience. Teachers have been amazing, really caring for our children and help them learn and grow. Our kids were very happy at school - leaving the building singing!
Also during the Covid period, there was extra cleaning and safety measures taken.

My child is very happy at the nursery. The outdoor play area is quite spacious. The staff are friendly and approachable. Face to face is now obviously limited due to Covid but they are always happy to speak to you about your child. The assistant manager is very diligent and focused, quick to reply to
email and resolve issues.
My only constructive criticism would be about the quality of food and level of nutrition in the meals e.g pasta, bread, crackers etc prior to the pandemic the quality of the food was much more varied.

Our child has thrived since attending West Hampstead Station Nursery. He has full varied days and lots of time outside, which was very important to us. The staff are excellent, as is the communication even in spite of Covid restrictions in place.

I could not recommend this nursery more. My son has been at the nursery for almost 2 years and I've seen him grow leaps and bounds. Given that he's allergic to many things, he is well looked after by staff, who are all just lovely! However, we did struggle a bit in the beginning with getting his name
put up on the allergy board and his name on his coat and bag hanger, but once that was resolved, everything was wonderful.

My son has been here since 2019 and has made friends and has visibly grown in his time there. I do have a few suggestions for improvement:
1. Coming up with an app on which existing parents of children can get updates/feedback/progress reports through the day - this would essentially omit the need
for the paper review at the end of the day which I feel is sometimes filled in haste and not always very useful and tends to be an unnecessary use of paper.
2. Since my son has joined pre-school, I don’t hear of any extra activities such as foreign language learning, yoga etc. which I know he enjoyed so it would be good to see more of this as well as learning based on his current level
3. A better variety for breakfast (such as porridge etc).
However, all in all, the staff are very pleasant and the hours are convenient for working parents. My son looks forward to going every morning so I am happy with that.

We've seen positive changes with the new management team but there could still be more effort made to communicate with parents - pictures during the day and personalised comments and feedback. It still feels a bit like processes are not consistent and that more staff is needed. They also could make
an effort in terms of the variety of menus offered to children and healthier options. Otherwise a nice space, kind staff and always many fun activities keeping the children happy. Convenient opening hours for working parents.

Our settlement period was 2 months long.
1 Extremely high staff turnover. During the settlement of my child, there were only 1-2 permanent people across the two baby groups the nursery has (1-2 people were on holidays) and the rest were agency staff that changed every day! I wasn’t even able to remember
their faces! Obviously, the babies get frustrated being left with strangers every day.
2 On a good point, management was quite open to sharing information during the hard times: kept parents up to date with the recruitment process, made staff shifts available to be viewed.
3 Settlement procedures need to be reviewed. Now the staff just takes the new coming baby for a certain period of time (1-4 hours) and let the baby cry-it-out. I believe this could be done in a much softer way: let parents stay with the baby in the room for a few times then leave only for a short period (5-15 min) for the first time. I believe it’s also helpful to invite staff to visit families at home as some schools do.

Active Learning West Hampstead is an excellent nursery. Having experienced a terrible childcare provider prior to the Active Learning Nursery, we were relieved to experience excellent care for our son in the baby room. The staff are extremely caring and friendly and we appreciate the time they take
to inform them us about our sons day when we pick him up. The communication with staff and management is great and we have experienced great flexibility with regards to changes in his nursery hours. We could not have chosen a better nursery for our son.

We feel the children are well looked after in the nursery and despite it being a big setting, each child is known by all teachers and admin staff. The activities proposed are good and give a nice structure to the week. The teachers seem to prepare the children very well to go to school and the pre-school
program is a good mix of play and learning. We feel our child develops well and is happy to go to nursery every morning.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.090)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.090) out of 10 for Bright Horizons West Hampstead Station Day Nursery and Preschool is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.916 for Bright Horizons West Hampstead Station Day Nursery and Preschool is calculated as follows: ( (98 Excellents x 5) + (9 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 107 Ratings = 4.916
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.174 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Bright Horizons West Hampstead Station Day Nursery and Preschool is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 164 number of registered child places is 32.8. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 32.8 = 0.274
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
