Dicky Birds Day Nursery had gone through a period of staff shortage in 2022 with many experienced staff leaving. This meant that there were occasions when they had to turn children away because they just didn't have the staff available to meet the required ratio. However, they seem to be fully staffed
now and the new staff have been wonderful. The food is also delicious (I've tried it!) and my little one frequently has more than one serving. Management can do a better job of communicating staff changes, such as giving parents sufficient heads up about staff leaving, introducing new joiners etc. But otherwise, the team are great and my little one is happy there.

Amazing nursery, my son loves it here and skips in most days. The staff are incredible! He’s always learning and out and about in the outdoors which is great. He’s learning lots of sports which I think is so important and one of his favourite parts.

Hard to overstate how big a part of our lives nursery is as working parents with no local family support - we’d be lost without Dicky Birds Day Nursery. We’ve had three children go through two Dicky Birds settings, before, during and after the pandemic years and it has been a consistently brilliant
experience for our family, mainly thanks to the love and care of the talented staff who really make it a second home. It’s been transformative for all our children’s confidence. Our third child is currently at Maple Road and loves the setting and all the staff so much, she toddles in and out of there every day beaming. I live for the photos of the messy play (the staff are extremely creative and I especially love that I don’t have to feel guilty about not doing messy play at home!), garden time and the trips to the river and cherish the weekly updates on what they are learning so I can share in the same songs, books and themes at home. Early years is undervalued, but we are so grateful for the Dicky Birds team

We love Dicky Birds Nursery. My son started here six months ago when he was one. He adores going and he’s grown in confidence so much.
The staff are so supportive and kind. I feel like they really know my son and they care about all of the children.
They do varied activities and the food is really
good. I couldn’t ask for more from a nursery and its staff!

I will split my review into the child development and overall nursery management categories. Regarding development, I think that the practitioners are doing a fabulous job. Our daughter adores the nursery and knows the names of a decent number of practitioners she had interacted with and also the names
of the children in her room. We are receiving regular updates on her progress. Management-wise, there used to be quite a few issues with the staffing shortages that negatively affected parents in the mornings as we had to wait for staff replacements and had been given at short notice. I assume that this had also been putting a high stress load on the practitioners (who had been handling it amazingly well) and consequently children. However, the situation seems to have improved. On the food note, the meals that they serve for lunch and tea seem varied and healthy, but the breakfast is not nutritious enough (no eggs), at least from what I've seen.

We love Dicky Birds. Our older two attended another DB nursery, and my middle one attended Maple Road for a few months when we moved. We tried another nursery with our youngest because it had slightly longer hours and was in a more convenient location for us. But we missed DB, the quality of care, the
lovely staff and the ethos so we came back and are so pleased. It’s even better than we remember. The staff have been great in both rooms so far. My son bounces in every morning and is happy when we pick him up. I couldn’t recommend the nursery more highly.

Staff go above and beyond to make sure your little one is safe, cared for and happy. We can speak to them about issues we are having regarding difficulties with getting our child to sleep, potty training etc and despite being super busy they give you that time and advice which is really helpful. We
attended a lovely Christmas event that the nursery put on which was fab, my daughter had lots of fun and it was a chance for the parents to meet too. Food and drink were great and once again staff really went that extra mile, on a Friday evening I might add- which we all know is precious time to unwind at the end of the week. Really appreciate their efforts.

We have had my daughter at Dicky Birds for a couple of years and overall have been impressed. The nursery has a nice range of facilities and activities. They make the most of the outdoor space and my little one enjoys the regular walks to the local parks and river.
We have got to know many of the staff
during our time and have been impressed with their dedication and enthusiasm. Managers are easily accessible and often present in the children's rooms.
My little one is excited for nursery each day and always comes home with a smile.

We have been with Dicky Birds for quite some time. Our firstborn daughter is now at school and our youngest is turning three. Over the years there have been some minor changes in regards to the management team and the company ownership, but this doesn’t seem to stop the amazing team to continue providing
a nurturing environment full of wonderful experiences. The staff are very friendly and knowledgable.

Always enthusiastic about learning and fun all mixed in together.
It’s well run with managers always on hand and room leaders always keen to talk to parents every day about the day’s activities.
Activities are varied - walks, learning, science experiments,

My son previously attended many years ago. My daughter currently attends and is in the Starlings room. She started her journey in the Ducks and has worked her way up the rooms. She is very excited to go in every day and see her friends and the team in the room. I can not fault the care that we have
received and you can see how hard all the staff work in the nursery. She comes home happy which is what my main hope is. The nursery displays as you enter the nursery are fantastic and very appealing! As a family, we cannot find a fault with the nursery.

My son and daughter attend the nursery full-time and every day you can see their happy faces so eager to go and play and have a great time with their daily activities.
As a parent, I’m really happy with how welcoming and professional the nurses are with all the care and dedication they put into my
children.
I would recommend the nursery 100%. It is worth every penny!

Our son loves going to Dicky Birds. The space provides a rich and safe environment to explore and learn. The staff are all friendly and engaging with the kids. I have been so impressed with our key worker. She takes a genuine interest in his learning and development and always takes the time to tell
us what he's been doing.
I really like the fact they take the kids out to the river etc and the outdoor space is a nice and educational environment.
Suggestions:
- put the menu on the door or include what they have eaten on their daily slip
- more regular updates, photos and info would be good when a child is just starting as this can be a daunting time for parents leaving their child for the first time
- providing a packing list for day one would be really useful!
But on the whole, a really positive experience and had no major issues.

All of the key workers in my child’s class are outstanding. They are passionate about giving children the best start and this comes across in the way that they interact with my child and me.
When my child started to stand on her own they seemed as excited as I was. My child is always happy to go to
nursery.

Three children have been through or are at Dicky Birds, Maple Road. They have enjoyed it (even the one who pretends not to as she likes playing games with the staff). They have formed strong bonds with other children, their key persons in each room and the carers in general.
There was an issue with
food for a short period but management listened to feedback and the food is better than ever.
I really like all the staff and see that they care for my children really well.
I would recommend to other parents.

We couldn’t be happier choosing Dicky Birds Day Nursery.
My son absolutely adores every single member of staff and so do we.
Being only with me and his dad for the first two years of his life due to Covid I thought it would be extremely difficult for all three of us to deal with the separation anxiety
but we had amazing support and my son settled in very fast!
We are so grateful for the love and care he is receiving from all staff.

Our son has been with Dicky Birds since late 2018 and has been through 4 of their rooms. We've been very happy with his development and he has built strong relationships with most of the staff. The team think hard about how to engage the children and provide a wide range of activities. He is always
bringing home art and seems to learn a lot about the world through activities - a dinosaur egg hatched in the nursery this morning! Dicky Birds has good facilities for kids of all ages - whether sleeping rooms for babies or outdoor play areas for bigger children. The outdoor space is limited, but they use their location well and spend plenty of time at the river, local parks or at forest school.
They did an amazing job during the pandemic - they offered flexibility on places and fees, increased hygiene and put the kids first. This did lead to changes, but the management team remain committed to making the nursery a warm and welcoming environment.

I couldn’t be happier with Dicky Birds, Maple Road. The staff are so kind, warm and attentive. I have seen my shy little girl become a confident, playful, well mannered and well-fed little cherub. She runs into school each day to hugs and smiles from all and clearly enjoys her day there. She learns
so much there and comes back to tell us all about her day - her vocabulary is astounding. We had recently emigrated to the UK when we enrolled our child in Dicky Birds. Our greatest anxiety around moving to the UK was whether she’d be happy and settle into nursery having had her own nanny her whole life. Thank heavens for the team - they have taken all those fears away from us and we are forever grateful to them. We are number one fans of Dicky Birds and highly recommend them.

Our child has had the utmost care shown to her. All staff are incredibly patient, understanding and great with kids. The staff communicate well with the parents and are always on hand to answer questions.
There is a wide range of activities they do each day to keep the children entertained which is
important to keep them interested and learning.
They eat well-balanced meals and there is plenty more if they require two and sometimes three helpings.
I have seen each day how much our child enjoys nursery, loves the teachers and often doesn't want to leave when it's time to go home. Our child's language, social skills, confidence and manners have improved vastly and we are incredibly proud and happy to send them to Dicky Birds!
Thank you to all who are involved in this wonderful nursery!

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.871 for Dicky Birds Day Nursery and Preschool Surbiton, Maple Road is calculated as follows: ( (230 Excellents x 5) + (34 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 264 Ratings = 4.871
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.88 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Dicky Birds Day Nursery and Preschool Surbiton, Maple Road is based on 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 125 number of registered child places is 25. 22 Positive Reviews ÷ 25 = 0.88
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
