Set within the Welbeck Estate, just outside Worksop, Child First Nursery offers children an unusually spacious environment in which to learn, explore and spend time in nature. With access to the wider 5,500-acre estate, the setting makes the most of its surroundings to provide experiences that extend well beyond the traditional nursery environment.

Children are introduced to a broad range of activities and skills, including horticulture, art, dance, music, cooking, nutrition and the natural world. Facilities include a music cave, sensory room, outdoor art room, allotment, fire pit and covered outdoor sleeping area. The nursery even has its own rare-breed chickens, giving children further opportunities to learn about animals and the natural environment.
Both indoor and outdoor spaces have been designed to encourage curiosity, creativity and active learning. The extensive grounds of the Welbeck Estate provide additional scope for children to experience the outdoors and develop an appreciation of the world around them.
Food is freshly prepared by an on-site chef, with locally sourced produce used wherever possible. Mealtimes form part of the nursery experience, complementing children's opportunities to learn about food, cooking and nutrition.
Child First places particular emphasis on its team of specialist practitioners and chooses to staff the nursery above the minimum legal requirements. During the settling-in period, each child is given the time and support they need to become comfortable and confident in their new surroundings, with their individual happiness and wellbeing remaining the priority.
The nursery is open from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm and offers free parking for families. While its estate location may mean travelling a little further for some parents, Child First aims to make that journey worthwhile through the breadth of space, experiences and opportunities available to children.

This nursery is certainly one of a kind, with amazing staff who really put the effort into helping your child progress and settle in. My little one started in October 2024 and struggled to be away from myself in a new environment with new people but the staff were compassionate and comforted her throughout the process and she now loves going to nursery to see the staff and her friends. The outdoor exposure they get is fantastic and suits my little one perfect as she's a very outdoorsy girl while also doing lots of fun indoor activities throughout the day.
If you're looking for a nursery that are compassionate and dedicated to caring for your child, then this place is certainly the one.

My little girl started at Child First Nursery at the start of January 2025. This is her 4th week being there and we know she is enjoying it. We've already seen a difference in her confidence and her normal self. The staff there are amazing too which I think helps. The big one for me is the daily updates that parents get through about their children. The nursery are always updating what the children are doing, what they're eating, any activities they do and anything else that's important. It's just really good to know.
This nursery is brilliant for any parents who want to take their children. I can't recommend it enough.

My daughters have both attending Child First from a young age. They love attending and have lots of fun whilst in the nursery setting. We have lots of plus points but also several detractors.

My daughters have both attending Child First from a young age. They love attending and have lots of fun whilst in the nursery setting. We have lots of plus points but also several detractors. The outdoor space is a real plus. No other nursery in the area has the space like Child First meaning that the majority of the year they are outside exploring. From care and attention to organisation, we've found Child First to be somewhat disappointing. The staff work hard but it does feel at times like they are busier than they should be. Belongings are not looked after, and the peg room is constantly a mess meaning you have to search high and low for clothing.
Mixed messaging from staff regarding accidents, means you are left feeling rather displaced. My daughter had a fall whilst in their care and fractured her skull and spent a week in Sheffield Children Hospital. Although not entirely their fault, this incident has left us questioning the nursery more than before.

I'm truly sorry to hear that you feel this way; we have genuinely cared for both of your daughters since they were little. I have personally been there to support you throughout your journey with us, so I'm quite disheartened by your review. Regarding your daughter's unfortunate accident almost a year ago, (which you praised the team for dealing with it so quickly and professionally), we supported you out of hours and were in constant contact offering any help we could give. You chose to keep your daughters with us after that incident, one has since started school while the other is still enjoying her time here. We are a busy nursery, but are always in ratio and often over staffed to offer support to all spaces. We strive to maintain a busy yet supportive nursery environment, always ensuring that staff/children ratios are met.

The staff are incredibly warm, attentive, and truly dedicated to the well-being and development of the children. Our baby has blossomed in their care, showing wonderful progress in social skills, creativity, and confidence. The facilities are top-notch, always clean, safe, and equipped with engaging and age-appropriate activities. The communication with parents is excellent, keeping us informed about our baby's daily experiences and milestones.

The best decision we ever made was to send our son to Child First Nursery. We decided to send him to nursery to help with his social skills and talking and he's come on leaps and bounds since starting in October. The nursery is perfect for him as he loves being outside in nature. He is so excited to go when we tell him it's nursery day. He gets out the car and can't get in there quick enough. The staff are amazing, it's lovely to see how the staff has gotten to know our son as a person, as when he wasn't sure about it at the start they encouraged him by tailoring activities to what he likes so he would feel comfortable. They are great at communication and updating you on how his day is going, we also get frequent observations about how is he developing, which is lovely to hear, (especially with photos). The manager is really lovely and will support you in anyway she can.
I would recommend this nursery to anyone. Everyday again and again. My son adores it and I know yours will too!

The setting and facilities are amazing and allow the little ones to spend most of their time outdoors. The staff are excellent and very attentive to the little one's needs. They sing, read, and plan activities to do with the children each day. Everything is logged on an app so parents can see what their child has eaten, nappy/toilet visits, accidents, etc.
The staff go out of their way to accommodate you and are very quick to respond to any queries.

All the staff are so kind and welcoming, the outside spaces are brilliant if you have an outdoor-loving child and I have always felt supported by the management team if I have any queries or issues. Just recently I was required to cut gluten out of my son's diet until his coeliac screen came back, straight away I was met with support by the space leader who kindly asked for a list of the things he liked to eat and she would add it to the shopping list for the next week. She said she would make him a little box up with his gluten-free snacks and food. I was very reassured that he would be supported with his gluten-free diet.
My first child came here and enjoyed it and now my youngest loves it too. The best nursery around!

Picking up my daughter always reminds me why I am so pleased and feel lucky we were told about this nursery. I arrive outside of this old building with its walled-in gardens, with direct access to the gardens via a secure entrance point. They are outside. Not a small fenced minimal area, but a green field full of real activities. Most of these sustainable built areas are lovingly put together using recycled timber and materials from around the historic Welbeck estate. My daughter is often playing with her nursery friends, often with a member of staff (for me not essential as she gains her own independence co-playing). I sit at the outdoor tables under a shelter and chat with the staff as they tell me about her day. The staff are so friendly and attentive.
My daughter is in her nursery clothes because she lives her day to the fullest and she will need a bath! She is smiling, and for me, she will have been outside in a safe space... bumps and dirt included!

I have over 20 years of experience working with children from newborns to teenagers. I began my career whilst studying at university and worked as a 1:1 with a 4-year-old boy with autism; this sparked an interest in how the mind works, especially in children. I then worked in a mother and baby unit, supporting young mums and their children and teaching them about life skills, how to care for their children, and how to look after themselves. I worked for Nottingham City Council for 10 years as a senior residential social care worker with children ranging from 4 years to 19 years, with learning disabilities, autism, and mental and physical disabilities. I love weekends away with my family, very spicy food, live concerts and long walks with my dog.
