Ofsted rating for Co-op's Sussex Nursery is Outstanding (July 2023)

At Co-op Childcare Sussex they stay engaged with lots of activities from bike school to PE lessons to phonics activities. There's lots of diverse ways for your child to stay engaged and learn at their nursery. They also encourage children with brothers or sisters at nursery to take part in 'Sibling Diaries', a chance for siblings to spend time together and for nursery practitioners to share their experiences with parents/carers.

They have an app called ParentZone which will keep all parents/carers updated on how their little one is getting on, from photos of their day, meals eaten and assessments.

They are big on safety which is why all their staff are paediatric first aid trained and they have 5 Little Pioneers who help to share the Co-op Childcare's core values with their children.

They also have growing areas for food which they also eat as well as having regular visits to their local care home.

At Co-op Childcare Sussex, they house 5 spacious rooms catering for children from 3 months - 5 years with the latest technology, including interactive whiteboards and age-appropriate resources. Outside it has an adventure garden with tunnels, water play, slides, bike tracks and planting area.

A lovely nursery and pre-school. Deserves its recent outstanding Ofsted report. Great, recently refurbished facilities indoors and outside, and attentive and communicative staff and management. Have had our son there from 2.5 (intend to keep him there till he starts primary at 4.5) and would thoroughly
recommend to other parents.

My child is happy here and the outdoor space is great, the only downside is the inflexible timing and having to pay for bank holidays.

Fantastic setting - amazing outdoor space which the children use all year round.

Nappies etc and meals are all provided which takes the stress away for busy parents. My daughter has dietary requirements and it seems no issue whatsoever as all the food is prepared fresh onsite. Also, the hours being

from 7.30-6.30 is fantastic. The nursery is purpose built and is always immaculately clean.

My daughter loves going, always has a lot to say about all the fun activities she has done each day. She also loves the fact the nursery has two rabbits and lots of IT equipment.

Friendly, professional staff.

Would highly recommend the nursery

Me and my wife started looking for nurseries for our 10 month old son back in September 2017. The main attraction for us is that the building is purpose built therefore not a converted house with seems to be all the range in Brighton and Hove these days. We arranged a consultation visit with the co-op
and the process was very simple and reassuring with initial contact prior to our visit as well as completion of security checks. When attending for the initial consultation I was immediately drawn to how positive the children responded to the day-care staff and my mind was made up from that point. So within the pre-checks to the visit and the first impressions I was aware that the most important things for me were taken care of (security, easy-communication and happy children) this was all I required to place my son here and I would recommend it to everyone!

This is a fantastic nursery with lovely modern facilities and an exciting outdoor area for the children to play in. The staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Children are served fresh and varied meals that are prepared on site. They engage the children in a wide variety of interesting activities.
My son loves it here.

Staff were generally good but management appalling, indicated by a number of staff and parents choosing to leave nursery at this time. No qualified teacher in pre-school for a long period and no learning outcomes.

My child has settled in so well in this nursery. The expertise, professionalism and caring nature of the staff in the ladybird room is really impressive. I feel very confident that my child is cared for and stimulated and that they always have his needs in mind. The key worker is incredible at her job
and I completely trust her and she is well supported by others. They always think of creative ideas to do with the children - from smelling different plants and flowers to doing vegetable planting, singing and stories. I do get an impression that communication between management and staff isn't always ideal, there are times when I think the expertise of the staff isn't respected as it should. But the management team do communicate well with parents and are always on hand to answer queries and concerns.

By and large, I would be likely to recommend, although with some issues. Pros - beautiful, helpful, welcoming installations. Staff try hard and are kind, it's very close and convenient to the University of Sussex. Cons - staff turnover rate is way too high, need to improve staff satisfaction if that
is what it will take to achieve greater stability.
Some staff clearly a bit stressed and highly strung.
Reply from Gemma Allardyce, Head of Central Operations at Co-op Childcare SussexThank you for your comments and your recommendation. As well as regular one to ones with all colleagues and annual reviews, we formally measure our Colleague Engagement every year by way of an anonymous survey where every colleague has an opportunity to have their say and make recommendations for things that might improve satisfaction. The results are collated externally and in 2016, 94% of colleagues from the Sussex nursery took part in the survey achieving a platinum score of 92 (out of 100). Colleague retention remains a key objective for us and we do all we can in our power to retain good people.

The team we friendly and helpful and showed genuine care for our son. They communicated with us frequently with their observations of his development and interests when at nursery. The rooms were very well equipped and thoughtfully arranged to provide the perfect play environment.
I would highly recommend

Our experience was fantastic! My daughter was very happy and always willing to come back. We are not joining the nursery anymore as we moved abroad, but we would be if we would have stayed in Brighton. I totally recommend it.

My little girl has been at this nursery since she was 18 months old.
She has loved being in every single room from the caterpillars up.
The staff are friendly, helpful and very engaging.
The facilities are great and she seems to love the food and eats a lot more there than she does at home!
If I
had any more children they would all be going here!

Diet and food are very important for my child, so it was great to know there was a chef on site every day preparing fresh healthy meals. The staff are amazing and very committed to their jobs which are great to see when you are trusting someone with your baby/toddler. At the end of the days, it's so
great to be handed a day sheet. The nursery is also very good at notifying parents of any problems, such as rashes and bumps. The nursery is also very accommodating of any requests you have for your child in regards to diet etc. My daughter is often doing fun and mentally stimulating activities. I believe she is learning a lot mentally and physically, which is great to see that the nursery is not just a place to leave my child for her to be looked after while I am at work but rather a fun filled place with great learning opportunities. I would absolutely recommend this nursery - initially, I had a nanny, however, even that does not compare to how fantastic this nursery is.

My Son attended this nursery for a year and I was extremely happy with his care. The outdoor facilities were amazing and there was a big focus on arts and craft. The food was freshly prepared and the daily reports very informative. They were exceptional when it came to any injuries.

My son loves nursery, and enjoys playing in the large outside space. He had a baby brother a few months ago and is just realising that mummy goes back home with the baby after dropping him off and is struggling a bit with that but the staff in both butterflies and preschool have been excellent with
him.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.894)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.894) out of 10 for Co-op Childcare Sussex is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.978 for Co-op Childcare Sussex is calculated as follows: ( (223 Excellents x 5) + (5 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 228 Ratings = 4.978
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.916 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Co-op Childcare Sussex is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 101 number of registered child places is 20.2. 19 Positive Reviews ÷ 20.2 = 0.941
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
