Springthorpe is a large nursery located between Erdington and Sutton Coldfield in Birmingham. The nursery provides childcare and early years education for children aged 0-5 years.

At Springthorpe, they understand that choosing a nursery is a task that parents want to be as simple as possible. They believe in creating calming, safe, and playful settings through an open-ended approach to early years learning.

The staff plan rich, varied, and imaginative activities which are tailored to each child’s interests and curiosities. The bespoke garden area has been designed in such a way that children can’t help but want to get outdoors (come rain or shine) and stretch those little legs.

Children aged 0-3 years may only book full-day sessions. We do not offer half-day sessions to children aged 0-3 years. The minimum number of sessions for children aged 0-3 years is two full days per week. If you book less than three full days, one of those days must be either a Monday or Friday.

Springthorpe Day Nursery and Pre-school is an excellent nursery. The staff are highly professional, they care about each individual child. They have helped me with my child's development, the safe-guarding has been excellent in relation to his needs. They provide excellent opportunity for learning and
have great facilities - in and out door. Excellent management. I feel very lucky to have such a nice nursery.

My son has been attending Springthorpe Day Nursery & Pre-school since September 2023 and I can honestly say that it’s the best decision we have ever made for him. His confidence has improved immensely, his speech and cognitive skills improve every day and he has made some amazing friends in both the
staff and other children in his group.
The staff take such amazing care and put so much love into their work. I am put at ease knowing that my son is so well loved and taken care of.
We are especially impressed with our son's key worker who is honestly an angel in disguise (every member of staff) our son adores her!
I cannot recommend this nursery enough.

My son was going there up until July. We decided not to send any of my other children because we feel it went downhill and not because of the staff I would say the manager.
A very high staff turnover which I was told was because they are trying to get the right staff and let go of old staff that don’t
fit what Tommies are trying to uphold. I was told this by the area manager. Which is fair enough but they only started letting me know who was looking after my son after I spoke to her. Previous to that, there were people there with no uniform.
My husband and I were not happy with the manager and her attitude towards my husband for a “misunderstanding” which wasn’t a misunderstanding at all, the manager lied. Along with other things that happened where I wasn’t listened to or just ignored.
The area manager was professional when she contacted me and obviously, she tried to sort the situation but I feel it’s my responsibility to tell other parents my situation.

We completely understand your concern regarding staff turnover at the nursery. Unfortunately, nurseries and other childcare providers across the sector are having significant difficulties in recruiting. However, it is vital that we do everything we can to ensure that we hire the right people to care for the children in our care. While our stringent recruitment procedure may mean it takes us a little longer to hire staff, we believe this is the correct approach to take.

In regard to your other concern, we can only apologise for the breakdown in communication on our part. We believe this relates to a graduation event which was due to be held at the nursery. While we accept that the date of the event should have been communicated to you and your husband in a more productive way, we assure you that there was no intention to mislead you.

We would like to offer you the opportunity to discuss your concerns further. Should this be something you wish to do, please feel free to reach out to us.

My daughter has been attending the nursery since April, and for the short time she has been there, she absolutely loves it here. Myself as a parent, I am so pleased with the nursery and cannot fault a thing. All of the staff are welcoming, friendly and always approachable for chat. I am constantly updated
with what my daughter eats, when she sleeps and what activities she does in the day via the app. She has come on leaps and bounds with her confidence since attending the nursery, and I have total peace of mind when she is there. We are encouraged as parents to be involved with our childs development, with monthly activities to do at home, and we are asked to submit information on what our children do outside of nursery. I honestly cannot think of a single bad word to say.

Management behaviour and attitude are greedy and disgusting. Springthorpe kept refusing entry for my child and requested PCR test results, even if she was not ill. Staff didn't do as much as at least measure her temperature, instead kept refusing her entry from day to day while I saw other kids walking
into the nursery with a severe cough. After contacting DfE and finding out no nursery is allowed to request PCRs for toddlers, the manager started to lie saying she never requested a PCR test.
At the top of this, I paid full month fees and stop bringing my child as the manager wouldn't let her in. A month later she was cheeky enough to call me to request another month's payment, as an excuse I was told I didn't give notice in writing, but at the same time in 1 month's time nobody even called to ask if the child is alright, if she's coming back or how she's doing, I received a phone call only when they were after money. I feel disgusted remembering this awful experience. Avoid this place!

We pride ourselves on the service we provide to parents and go to great lengths to ensure that parents receive a great customer experience, so it is a shame that we have not met your or our own expectations on this occasion.

At the time of the issue you have referenced, the guidance we were following from the DfE was that children displaying symptoms of Covid-19 either needed to self-isolate for 10 days or secure a negative test result before attending the nursery. As you decided not to test your child (neither PCR nor LFT), our policy was that your child would then need to self-isolate for the required period. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused, however, we were duty-bound to follow the guidance in place at that time.

Staff are always very friendly. My son has struggled with being upset going, but they have really looked after. He looks forward to going now, which I didn’t think would happen, but that is all down to how reassuring and wonderful the staff are. The app is excellent as we get updates throughout the
day.

Very happy with the childcare provided. My child really enjoys his time there. The staff are great, and the place is very clean, and there is plenty of things. There are lots of activities for my child to explore. All information is in the app.

I would highly recommend this nursery. Both my two older children attended the nursery, and 10-years later, when I had my youngest, I still chose nursery. After looking at several different nurseries, I still found this one was the best.

If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 number of registered child places is 12, which has been reached with 22 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Thank you for taking the time to discover Springthorpe Day Nursery. My name is Lucinda Rumble (call me Lou), and I'm the Nursery Manager here. I have more than 20+ years' experience in early education and am a Mum of three myself.


Since earning my childcare qualifications in 1999, I've spent my career creating learning environments where every child feels seen, nurtured, and encouraged. I believe I bring a wealth of leadership to the team here, having spent more than 15 years as a Nursery Manager.


I joined Tommies because our ethos here matches my own. We focus on warm relationships with families, provide thoughtful care for the children entrusted to us, and create purposeful learning opportunities through play that develop confidence and independence.
