WHAT WE ARE LEARNING - WEEK COMMENCING 25TH MAY 2026

Clever Cats and Clever Kittens Next week in Preschool, we will be exploring caterpillars and butterflies. The children will learn about how caterpillars grow and change into butterflies, introducing new vocabulary such as “chrysalis” and “spinning” as we discuss each stage of the life cycle. We will also be celebrating change and growth as the Clever Cats become Graduates, linking this special milestone to how butterflies transform and grow. The children will be focusing on the letter Z while also recapping all of the letters we have learned so far through a range of fun phonics and mark making activities. We will also be practising writing numbers and continuing to build confidence in forming letters correctly. To support physical development, the children will enjoy dancing and moving like caterpillars and butterflies, using movement and music to explore how they move and change. Ladybirds Next week we are excited to explore all things butterflies and caterpillars! Our story of the week is The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and the children will enjoy listening to the story and beginning to recall some of the foods the caterpillar eats and what happens during his journey.

At our focus table, children will explore simple story themed pattern activities. To support physical development, we will also be using the sports hall where the children can move freely and flutter around like butterflies while practising their movement and spatial awareness.

Butterflies Next week the Butterflies will be exploring butterflies and caterpillars through sensory play, movement and stories. We will be sharing The Very Hungry Caterpillar using simple words, pictures, props and actions to support early listening and engagement.

We will explore some of the foods from the story through sensory experiences, such as looking at, touching and talking about different fruits. Children will also enjoy simple mark making and pattern play inspired by butterflies and caterpillars.

To support physical development, we will use the sports hall to move freely, crawl, toddle and wave scarves like fluttering butterflies. We are looking forward to a week full of sensory exploration, movement and early storytelling experiences!
