WHAT WE ARE LEARNING - WEEK COMMENCING 25TH MAY 2026

Clever Cats and Clever Kittens Next week in Preschool, we will be exploring caterpillars and butterflies. The children will learn about how caterpillars grow and change into butterflies, introducing new vocabulary such as “chrysalis” and “spinning” as we discuss each stage of the life cycle. We will also be celebrating change and growth as the Clever Cats become Graduates, linking this special milestone to how butterflies transform and grow. The children will be focusing on the letter Z while also recapping all of the letters we have learned so far through a range of fun phonics and mark making activities. We will also be practising writing numbers and continuing to build confidence in forming letters correctly. To support physical development, the children will enjoy dancing and moving like caterpillars and butterflies, using movement and music to explore how they move and change. Ladybirds Next week the Ladybirds will exploring Butterflies and Ladybirds through the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar with a range of fun and engaging activities. They will investigate different fruits in the home corner, using their senses to talk about textures, colours and tastes while developing their imaginative play skills. The children will also create their own favourite fruits using stencils and paint, encouraging creativity and fine motor development. In our Hungry Caterpillar themed tuff tray, toddlers will enjoy hands-on sensory exploration, counting, sorting and retelling parts of the story through play. These activities will support communication, creativity, and early literacy skills in a playful and exciting way.

Butterflies Next week our babies will celebrate May Day with ribbons, butterflies, ladybirds and springtime sensory fun! The children will enjoy exploring mini flower baskets filled with petals, leaves and colourful ribbons, gentle flower-scented playdough and nature-inspired songs such as 'Ring a Ring o’ Roses’, 'Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush' and 'Five Little Ladybirds'. Babies can wave and swish soft ribbon wands, play peekaboo with bright scarves and enjoy special grown-up-and-baby movement time together. We’ll also get creative with baby-safe painting, handprint butterflies to take home and musical ribbon shakers for a joyful sensory experience.
