WHAT WE ARE LEARNING - WEEK COMMENCING 4TH MAY 2026

Last Updated: 01 May 2026 @ 00:00 AM

Clever Cats and Clever Kittens Next week, the Clever Cats and Clever Kittens will be learning about VE Day. To celebrate we will be hosting a special VE Day stay and play, we would love for you to join us on Friday the 8th of May from 4-5pm. During the week, the children will be making their own medals, inspired by those given to soldiers. They will also enjoy role-playing in our new doctor’s practice, caring for patients and treating broken bones. In literacy, the Clever Cats will be writing invitations for their parents and carers to attend our VE Day celebration, while the Clever Kittens will be practising the letters V and E. In maths, the Clever Cats will be exploring 3D shapes and the Clever Kittens will be focusing on recognising 2D shapes. Our song of the week is “The Grand Old Duke of York” and our book of the week is “The Gordon Star”. Ladybirds This week the Ladybirds have been enjoying working on our colours through a fabric dance, calling out the colour we have before moving to the music! We have loved to make our own animal pictures using stencils and crayons while looking at pictures of our own pets! Next week the Ladybirds will be looking at VE Day, we will be exploring in the home corner that is set up as a picnic area to develop our imaginative play! On the craft table we will be able to explore with different materials all in the colours of red, blue and white to create our own buntings. In the tuff tray we will be exploring in red, blue and white rice, using spoons and forks to work on our scooping skills to help us feed ourselves at dinner time!

Butterflies Next week we will be celebrating VE Day with a range of fun, sensory activities. During the activities the Butterflies will explore red, white and blue materials, enjoy music and movement sessions where they can walk, clap and stamp to the rhythm and take part in a mini “street party” picnic with their friends. These activities support children to develop friendships with others and grow in independence, sometimes choosing to do things by themselves. Through songs and group play, they will begin to develop effortful control, listen to simple instructions and engage through gaze, gesture and early talk. We will also introduce new vocabulary such as flag, colours and party.

A lovely way to build confidence, communication and social skills while celebrating together.
