Bringing Learning to Life: Our Duckling Hatching Experience ??

At Tiny Toez, we are always looking for meaningful, hands-on ways to bring learning to life and this spring, something very special has arrived across all of our settings… ducklings. ?? As part of our ongoing commitment to enriching our curriculum and supporting children’s understanding of the world, we have introduced duckling hatching experiences in every nursery. This exciting initiative is more than just a moment of wonder, it’s a carefully planned opportunity to support children’s learning, curiosity, and connection to the natural world.

From the moment the eggs arrive, the children are fully involved in the process. They observe the eggs in the incubator, talk about what might be happening inside, and learn about the care and patience needed to support living things. When the ducklings begin to hatch, it’s a truly magical experience, one that sparks awe, questions, and meaningful conversations.

Through this experience, children are developing a deeper understanding of life cycles, growth, and change. They begin to notice how living things need care, warmth, food, and water, helping to build early empathy and responsibility. These moments link directly to our Understanding the World curriculum, where children explore nature, living things, and the environment in real and memorable ways.

Our duckling project also supports our wider commitment to climate action. By giving children first-hand experiences with living things, we are helping them to form early connections with nature. Research shows that children who develop a love and respect for the natural world from a young age are more likely to care for it as they grow. At Tiny Toez, we believe these small, meaningful experiences lay the foundation for environmentally responsible futures.

Of course, alongside the learning, there is plenty of joy too! The children love watching the ducklings waddle, hearing their gentle cheeps, and helping to care for them under close adult supervision. These shared experiences create lasting memories and a real sense of excitement in the nursery.
