Situated in the rural area of Chettiscombe, in The Cider Barn, Wooden House Nursery offers high quality early years care and education in a home from home setting.

The nursery has recently undergone an expansion in September 2025, which has included the addition of a brand new pre-school room. This has created additional vacancies for all age groups and allowed for the existing space to be used in a much more flexible way to best meet the needs of all children.
Wooden House is an engaging and stimulating environment, where children are encouraged to be independent, participate and become active leaders of their own learning. Children have direct access to a secure garden outdoors to allow children the chance to explore the natural world and where outdoor learning is a huge part of their every day curriculum.

Following the EYFS curriculum, each day is designed to promote development whilst also ensuring children have fun, socialise with their peers and have the opportunity to explore their own interests which support progress of their next steps.

The team welcome all children and their families to visit the nursery and take a look around, they are sure you will feel right at home from the moment you step through the door.

A lovely setting, great outdoor space, undercover, the children can still get out in all weathers. Caring staff, Help with a smooth drop off.
Good communication between staff and parents, great updates throughout the day!
Reply from Caroline Taplin, Manager at Wooden House NurseryThank you for taking time to complete a review. The outdoors is important for children and as mentioned we are fortunate to have both an undercover area and garden so children can have fresh air every day whatever the weather. We also like to develop good relationships and communications with our families as it is a key part of supporting a child's settling, learning and development so it is great to hear that we are achieving this.

My daughter, Norah attends Wooden House three days a week. She receives such wonderful care from her key worker and all staff in her room. They are all attentive, engaging and greet her with smiles and excitement each morning. Norah looks forward to attending and always lets us know what she's done,
how much she played. I can't fault the setting. Communication is first class, and like previously stated the care is exceptional.
Reply from Caroline Taplin, Manager at Wooden House NurseryThank you very much for your lovely review. It is nice to hear that Norah is so happy at the setting and lets you know what she has been doing during her day. We are always keen to meet and greet the families and it is important to us that we communicate well to those who are the main carers.

Our son joined wooden house in September and it has been a huge success. A lovely small group with lots of interaction with our key worker, we are always informed about his progress and any concerns. He loves all the activities they do daily and getting outside! We couldn't be happier with the experience
an it has made my return to work so much easier.
Reply from Natalie Purkiss, Head of Childcare at Wooden House NurseryThank you for leaving a review of Wooden House outlining how happy you are with the setting and the care and education your child receives. We are delighted that you feel well informed about your child's progress and that you have plenty of interaction with your key person. Our outdoor space is wonderful and definitely a big hit with the children, who learn so much by being outdoors. We are glad that you could not be happier with your experience at the nursery. Best wishes Natalie

My daughter loves going to Wooden House - ever since she started going we have had no problems with her at drop off and she goes to the staff with her arms outstretched and doesn't look back. I think that says it all! She loves being there, the staff are super diligent and the fact they have dedicated
rooms with air con and black out blinds for sleeping is great as I know not all nurseries have this.
Reply from Natalie Purkiss, Head of Childcare at Wooden House NurseryThank you for leaving a 5* review of Wooden House nursery. We are delighted that you are so happy with the care that your daughter receives. Knowing she is happy when you leave is so reassuring as a parent, and we enjoy having her in the setting! We are so glad we chose Wooden House for our daughter's nursery. The nursery has a lovely rural setting with amazing outside space for the children to play. The staff are all very welcoming and friendly and are incredibly attentive to all the children's needs. They very much work with the parents to
ensure that your child's needs are met. My daughter struggled when she first started at nursery as she was very shy and introverted around people she didn't know or in unfamiliar environments. The staff were amazing at helping her to settle into nursery and within just two weeks, we'd already noticed a big difference. A few months on, and she has blossomed. She has so much more confidence now and loves interacting with new people. We've even had family remark on the change and we feel that Wooden House has played a big part in this. The app is great and it's lovely to see the activities that they plan for the children. They also spend a lot of time outdoors which I love.
Reply from Caroline Taplin, Manager at Wooden House NurseryMany thanks for your kind review. It has been lovely to see how your daughter has progressed and grown in confidence. It is so valuable to have good relations and communication with parents so we can work together on processes such as settling in and I think that this has been key for your daughter.

Our son loves being outdoors, so the rural setting and amazing outside space at Wooden House were what first drew us in and really sets them apart from other nurseries in and around Tiverton. The staff are so friendly and caring, and we love getting regular updates through the app each day.
Having previously
had a childminder and after relocating, this was a big change for our 2 year old - he sometimes finds drop-offs hard, but the team have been brilliant at helping him (and us!) through this. We know he's happy there and really enjoys his days. His communication skills have also come on so much since starting 4 months ago too. We're really glad we chose Wooden House.
Reply from Caroline Taplin, Manager at Wooden House NurseryThank you for taking the time to complete a review. We are very lucky with our outside space and it is somewhere the children like to spend a lot of their time. I am glad that we have been able to support you as a family as part of the settling in process. We know how difficult it can be for everyone to change settings so it is important to us that we consider the whole family in this process.

We can't say enough about how good wooden house has been for both of are children especially are boy. He started nursery really upset and unsettled but now he will happily run in and enjoy himself. They support both our children when they had to adjust to having a new brother at home. There so welcoming
and nothing seem to be a problem. The outside space is brilliant especially when you've got children who love going outside also the new room set ups are outstanding. They've made the whole nursery experience a lot more easier especially with all the updates throughout the day, it feels like an extension to our family.
Reply from Caroline Taplin, Manager at Wooden House NurseryThank you for your lovely review. It is great to hear how we have been able to help your son in particular settle especially as he found it difficult to leave you initially. I am pleased to hear how you like the new room and with access straight onto the garden it has been very popular with the children.

Our son started at Wooden House when he was 11 months old, and now at 2 years old he has thrived in their care.
The team have always made us feel welcomed and reassured. They take the time to understand our childs needs and personality, and it's clear how much they genuinely care. We can see how much
he enjoys his time there through the learning, play and relationships he's built.
As parents, we've always felt informed and supported. Nursery staff are approachable, open and happy to talk about his day or answer any questions. We would recommend Wooden House to any family looking for a nurturing and supportive childcare setting.
Reply from Caroline Taplin, Manager at Wooden House NurseryThank you for your kind review. Wooden House Nursery is such a wonderful and caring setting for our little girl. She took a while to settle and find her feet, but the staff have been so supportive and really helped the process. We feel like the nursery is an extension of our family. Staff are always super welcoming. The new building
is awesome and I love the undercover outside area, so the children can always be outside what ever the weather. The changes they are making to the setting are all positive. Thank you for making the nursery experience feel easy.

We love Wooden House and the team that work there. A few minutes' drive from Tiverton town centre, the nursery offers so much more outside space than other nurseries in the town due to its rural setting. We get regular updates on our daughter's day through the app. Wooden House is an excellent nursery;
we're so glad that we chose it.

Wooden House is a fantastic Nursery.
Our Daughter loves going. So much so that she almost jumps out of my arms when she sees the lovely staff in the mornings at drop off.
You get updates all through the day about what the kids have been up to and snack/nap/nappy updates.
We honestly couldn't be happier
with this brilliant little nursery!

My son absolutely adores all the staff at wooden house. As someone who has to travel for work it's really reassuring to know that my little boy is happy when I'm not there. The facilities are brilliant and the activities the kids do are great. They have an app where the photos of the day are uploaded
and your invoices are uploaded making everything easy to use and traceable. I couldn't recommend woodenhouse more.
Reply from Caroline Taplin, Manager at Wooden House NurseryIt has been so lovely watching your son grow and develop from starting with us in the baby room. He has strong bonds with many of the staff and loves to explore, especially in the outside area. It is good to hear how useful the app is, especially in your situation when you are away but still able to see what activities your son has taken part in during the day. The nursery helped my 2-year-old settle in incredibly quickly after moving from another setting. He absolutely loves it and has built strong connections with several members of staff, not just his key worker, which has been really reassuring. They do lots of reading, engaging activities (he often comes
home with baked goods!), and singing - and one of the staff plays her guitar to the children, which is just lovely. I always feel that my child is very safe, happy, and well cared for here. They also have a great outdoor space and get the children outside as much as possible.

Highly recommend.

Reply from Caroline Taplin, Manager at Wooden House NurseryThank you very much for your kind review. Once a child is settled we like them to form links with all the staff so they fell safe and secure even when they are not there and it is lovely to hear that you as a parent can see this. We are very lucky to have a member of staff with music talents that we can use with the children as they love the sessions and music is such as valuable activity for helping children's holistic development. It has been a pleasure to see how well your son has settled in and see him enjoying the outside area in all weathers!

The lovely staff have been fantastic at supporting my son's transition to Wooden House nursery. They have taken the time to get to know and understand him and he is happy at drop off and pick up. I know he is having a great day when there and is being well looked after. We love seeing the daily photos
and they are always up to something fun. They have a fantastic outdoor space as well, which is such a bonus. They support him in his development and help him in meeting his milestones, as well as keeping us up to date in how he's getting on! Thank you!
Reply from Caroline Taplin, Manager at Wooden House NurseryMany thanks for your lovely review. One of the most important things is that children are happy when they are in our care, so it is good to hear that the photos we put out for parents to see reflect that as well as showing what they have been up to during their day. We also work hard to engage with each child and family individually to meet their needs when they join the setting, and it is rewarding to hear that this has been the case for yourselves and the transition has gone well.

My son came to Wooden House in July 2025 after having been at a previous nursery which he had loved. We were sad to move him but all the staff were brilliant in supporting us all with the transition particularly their fantastic manager who would check in regularly as he was struggling to settle.
He
loves the activities they plan and the great space outdoors and has built a good relationship with the staff, especially his fantastic key worker who he adores.
I would highly recommend Wooden House. Some nurseries might look fancier or have more space/resources but this place is all about the people and I know my son is cared for, listened to and supported to grow and develop.
Thank you

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.939) out of 10 for Wooden House Nursery is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 41 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 41 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.939 for Wooden House Nursery is calculated as follows: ( (460 Excellents x 5) + (28 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 489 Ratings = 4.939
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Wooden House Nursery is based on 41 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 30 number of registered child places is 6, which has been reached with 41 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
