They have 5 Little Pioneers who help share their core values with children from encouraging them to express their feelings to making a difference in the world. They have a ParentZone app which keeps parents/carers informed about life at nursery with photos from their day, assessments, meals eaten and even toilet training progress!
They are big on safety and that's why ALL their staff are paediatric first aid trained. They are silver eco schools accredited, a programme that sees children lead the way in making little changes that deliver big environmental differences.
They are also big on happy children so they have areas for growing food (and eating it), regular visits to local care homes and take care of each other and the world.
Located on the outskirts of leafy Selly Park in Birmingham, Little Pioneers St Edwards provides high quality, innovative childcare for children up to the age of five. The nursery is set in a converted Victorian school with its own Forest School nearby.

About this price
How funding is applied, how the monthly figure is calculated.More info
- Working parents of children aged 9 months to 2 years can usually claim up to 30 funded hours a week. The working-parent hours depend on each parent meeting the minimum earnings rules and earning under £100,000 a year. This nursery stretches funded hours across 52 weeks of the year. You've selected 30 funded hours.
- This nursery applies up to 10 funded hours per day, stretched across 52 weeks of the year. With your selected funding, 21.9 hours are covered each week. Hours beyond this, including the early and late parts of the day, are charged at the standard rate.
- We work out the total cost across the year and divide by 12, so the figure shown is a smoothed monthly average. In practice, nurseries bill in different ways. Some bill monthly at this average. Others bill weekly, or charge for what happened that week or month, which can vary across the year. Confirm billing details with the nursery when you enquire.

St Edwards is a fantastic nursery. The staff are friendly, caring and engaging. Both my eldest who is now at school and my son have attended the nursery. The environment is stimulating and fun, the outside space is great for exploring and the food is great. Highly recommend.

Nothing but positivity for the staff in the purple room and First Steps Nursery. My 11-month-old is so happy spending his days there in the care of the amazing staff. He is loved and cared for and I couldn't be any happier. My first born attended First Steps before starting school this September and every day we come to pick up my son. She is super excited to see the staff who cared for her during her time here. Everyone is very friendly and super experienced. I would have no hesitation in recommending.

They did not prepare my child well for the reception year. Although the fees are expensive, the standard is not great.

As you are aware we have recently undergone staffing changes and are working hard to try and provide a smooth transitional period in the nursery. In response to these problems, we’ve ensured our staff attend further training, and a new, experienced Nursery Manager is starting with us shortly. A full refund of the over payment has now been issued. The management team here at St Edwards take parents' complaints and issues seriously and make every effort possible to action these as and when they arise.
Our Preschool focus is solely on getting the children school ready. We have a number of schemes set up to help the children become school ready such as Read Write Inc and the Ayla bikes programme tailored specifically to our nurseries and the children we cater for. Again, we are very sorry to hear of the concerns you have raised in this review, we regret that you felt unable to raise these concerns with nursery staff prior to your child leaving for school as we would have worked together to ensure your concerns were fully listened to and acted upon. The nursery has had recent staffing changes due to colleagues pursuing other career paths but all new staff are fully trained to the high standard we believe we hold here at St Edwards. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the nursery in the future if you would like any further information or would like to discuss this further.

She always eats well and comes home with lots to tell us about her day - mostly food related.
Our 2 boys adore going here. The facilities and resources are brilliant and they get to do a wide variety of fun and engaging activities. What really makes it such a good place are the staff. They give so much time and effort to all the kids we can't thank them enough.

Everyone is super lovely and friendly. They always keep us informed with his progress and send pictures of him enjoying the activities. It feels like a home away from home, we feel very confident that he is in safe hands and is being given the opportunity to thrive amongst his fellow children and with the staff members. The setting is clean and bright and has some wonderful facilities on site. We are so happy we found First Steps!
Home from home for our little girl.
The staff are so warm and friendly but still professional, can’t recommend it enough

The toddler room is more chaotic the staff don't seem to know my child well, there is a lot of sickness and a few miscommunications. My child now is eager to get his coat on and leave, whereas before he would want to show me the toys etc. We seem to be getting confusing emails from management regarding payments despite paying on time each month.
I have always been extremely pleased with the standard of care provided by this nursery to my daughter. She is very happy there and is learning lots. The staff are lovely and the facilities are excellent.

First Steps Children's Nursery is a special place to entrust your child's formative first years. I am amazed at the experience our children (and we as parents) have had there. The setting is beautiful, with masses of engaging outdoor space. Each room is spacious and beautifully set up, with dedicated sensory areas for each age group. There is nothing cramped or crowded about the nursery, and every display is well thought out and put together. There's a separate building for pre-school, which creates the perfect atmosphere for transition into a school setting. Each day holds a variety of activities and I'm constantly amazed by the adventures my children have. The children can join in with footie, bugs, French lessons and, crucially, Forest School. All fantastic opportunities for learning through play but it's the staff that are the real selling point of the nursery. Every one of them loves and lives for the children they work with, and it shows in the care and pride they display every day.

The activities and learning is varied and continually measured against the early year's criteria. I love receiving my monthly report. The facilities are the best I've seen and the food is healthy and varied which offers a well-balanced diet. I cannot praise this nursery enough and have absolutely no doubt that my little girl is receiving the best start in her education and learning here. She is developing all the time thanks to the lovely staff here.

I have always felt very welcome here and so has my child, and I am always updated on my child's progress on a regular basis.
First Steps has played a vital role in my child's early learning which will have a positive impact throughout growing up.

The rooms are really well equipped to entertain the little ones, the activities are so creative, the menu is delicious and my boy seems to eat perfectly at the nursery. Feedback is given daily and the staff always make you feel welcome to ask questions or share concerns.
My little boy loves his nursery days so I can go to work without worrying about him.
