First Class Nursery provides high-quality, integrated and flexible day care for babies, toddlers and pre-school children, close by to Huddersfield town centre.

Highly trained and experienced staff provide a wide range of stimulating and educational activities linked to the EYFS curriculum. The staff encourage and support all children to achieve their full potential, actively promoting the development of positive self-image within each child.

Children are given lots of opportunity to get creative in the outdoors, with woodwork, loose parts play and caring for the fruit and vegetables which are grown every year.

First Class has embedded the curiosity approach, where modern toys and technology are removed from the learning environment and replaced with everyday items to encourage children's natural curiosity and eagerness to explore and create.

First Class Nursery menus are planned in house and children, parents and staff are actively involved in this process. Good quality, fresh, wholesome ingredients are used to prepare meals. The nursery supports local suppliers where reasonably practical and cater for a variety of special diets. Nursery currently holds a Food For Life Early Years Award and continue to follow the Food for life ethos.

The nursery work in close partnership with parents and carers, maintaining strong, open and honest working relationships and good communication through regular newsletters, email updates, parents zone electronic journal, child's learning journals that can be accessed in the child's room and also parents evenings.

    Fully Funded 30 hours places are subject to a sundries charge of £1.50 per hour
    For example: 23 hours per week £34.50 10 hours per week £15.

My daughter attends the preschool here, she loves the vast selection of activities on offer from Forest School to food for life cooking, baking, she enjoys the woodwork area, sensory garden and water activities. She loves all the staff in the nursery which are of a range of ages, ethnic backgrounds
and long term members of staff offering stability, continuity and low staff turnover. I love that the staff plan for my daughter's individual needs following her interest and taking on board things that she likes at home. Staff know exactly where her learning is at and plan around her areas for development.

I chose to put my little one into a nursery when she was 2. She went one day per week until she was 3. She really enjoys her time at First Class and the staff look after her as well as I could. The level of staff is fab and she has come on no end in the last 2 years. She will be leaving the setting
in September and she will miss the staff and her friends. I feel that she has been well cared for and would highly recommend to anyone.

Laura Barthorpe

Job Title: Nursery Manager Joined: 2018

My Name is Laura, I am the Nursery Manager at First Class.


I qualified in 2010 with BTEC Level 3 in childcare. I then went on to complete my degree in BA (Hons) Early Years with professional studies and QTS. I graduated in 2015 with a 2:1.


I started working at First Class in 2018 as a nursery practitioner and then was promoted to senior practitioner in 2019. From then, I remained a Pre-School senior until I was promoted to deputy manager in 2022. I have recently been promoted to nursery manager.


I am now mainly based in the office but I like to go into the rooms to help out when needed and at dinner times. I love my job and I’m passionate about working with children. I am told by my colleagues that I am kind, and always willing to listen and help. Goes above and beyond in my role as a manager.


My other roles within the nursery are safeguarding officer and health and safety officer. I have carried out many training courses including EYFS, food hygiene, First Aid, behaviour management and Mental Health First Aid.

Job Title: Deputy Nursery Manager Joined: 2013

I qualified in 2010 with an NVQ Level 3.


I've worked at First Class since 2013.


I have worked in all the rooms in the nursery as a practitioner and also as a senior, I then became deputy manager in 2016.


In 2018 I completed a BA in Early Years.


I have been on many training courses including behaviour management, health and safety, food hygiene and first aid.


I've been told I am a funny, caring enthusiastic member of the team. I love working with children and I love to work with all age groups at First Class.
