First Class Nursery provides high-quality, integrated and flexible day care for babies, toddlers and pre-school children, close by to Huddersfield town centre.

Highly trained and experienced staff provide a wide range of stimulating and educational activities linked to the EYFS curriculum. The staff encourage and support all children to achieve their full potential, actively promoting the development of positive self-image within each child.

Children are given lots of opportunity to get creative in the outdoors, with woodwork, loose parts play and caring for the fruit and vegetables which are grown every year.

First Class has embedded the curiosity approach, where modern toys and technology are removed from the learning environment and replaced with everyday items to encourage children's natural curiosity and eagerness to explore and create.

First Class Nursery menus are planned in house and children, parents and staff are actively involved in this process. Good quality, fresh, wholesome ingredients are used to prepare meals. The nursery supports local suppliers where reasonably practical and cater for a variety of special diets. Nursery currently holds a Food For Life Early Years Award and continue to follow the Food for life ethos.

The nursery work in close partnership with parents and carers, maintaining strong, open and honest working relationships and good communication through regular newsletters, email updates, parents zone electronic journal, child's learning journals that can be accessed in the child's room and also parents evenings.

I cannot speak highly enough of First Class Nursery. All 3 of our children have attended, so we have experience of all the different rooms and facilities they have to offer. The building and grounds are kept to an excellent standard. It is clean with a large variety of toys and offers a wide selection
of home-cooked food. The nursery provide a range of activities and plan things to do to get the children ready for school. The staff are amazing. They really go above and beyond for the children. All the staff are so kind and caring and treat the children as if they were their own. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this nursery to anyone.

My daughter comes to this nursery and she absolutely loves it, she settled really well and really quickly within 1 week. The staff are really nice, welcoming and friendly. They have helped my daughter settle really quick. I would definitely recommend First Class Nursery.

My daughter has attended this nursery for four months now and is having a great time. The team are extremely attentive and create a stimulating and friendly environment. She is allergic to several food groups and the team go out of their way to ensure that she is well cared for. The building is great
with the baby room able to access their own outdoor space easily and plenty of space to pick up or drop off by car. I fully recommend.

After a long break from nursery due to Covid, we were a little nervous for our son to go back. He went back and settled into a routine with no problems the nursery were very welcoming, within a week he was transferring into a bigger room with no issues, he loved the baby room but Bumblebees is amazing,
he doesn't even say bye anymore as he's so excited to go in. I love seeing what he's doing throughout the day with Facebook updates, honestly couldn't ask for a better nursery and staff.

The nursery staff are excellent, very friendly and attentive. I've been reassured that my child is settling in well with the daily reports and updates via the app. At the parent's evenings his key worker made some spot-on observations about him that made me feel like the staff pay attention to each
individual child, which is excellent. They deal with his allergies and eczema in a brilliant manner.

My son loves First Class, as do I. I 100% trust the nursery will give the best standard of care and commitment to his development. I would recommend the nursery to family and friends. The staff team are great. My son has had two fantastic key workers. It's great I can use the app to track progress and
activities. We love seeing posts of what the children have been doing that day. As a parent, I feel really included. The staff are friendly. They offer great learning activities, trips and home interaction.

My son has attended since 9 months old. I will be extremely sad when he leaves this September as he will have turned 3 and start school nursery. My niece and nephews attended and First Class had been recommended to me. I expected to be happy with the level of care, but they have also surpassed my expectations.
I've always been offered the flexibility I need with my son's attendance, changing to suit my working hours at ease. I completely trust the staff team to care, teach and safeguard my child. Their outstanding Ofsted report is well deserved. Teaching standards and parental involvement is excellent. I haven't had one issue or concern in almost three years. I will definitely enrol my next child.

My daughter is very happy at First Class. She has a good relationship with all the staff and seems to have settled in really well. Staff are very welcoming and friendly and keep us well informed. This nursery despite being a large setting and part of a larger chain feels like one big happy family. All of the staff are welcoming and friendly, regardless of whether they have immediate contact with my son or not and take an active interest in his interests and experiences. All facilities are currently
bein updated to further enrich the high standard of provision already available. Despite being in the baby room my son experiences a wide range of exciting activities also available to older children and thoroughly enjoys his days here.

I would definitely recommend this nursery. The staff are welcoming any issue gets dealt with quickly even though there hardly have been any. My eldest attended and now my youngest is at the nursery but I'll be sad when he leaves, it's like our second home haha. Well done Birkbees you all should be proud

My child is very happy at this nursery and loves all staff and loves doing all the activities, which are varied. Staff always inform me about my child's development, talent or interests. I can also check my child's development through the parent zone. Staff also posts pictures on Facebook almost daily,
so that I am in touch with my child during the day - eg. I can check what he's been doing during my lunch break at work which is amazing.


The nursery also works with a university student and we have agreed to participate in her study. Our child gets some extra attention thanks to that. The only thing I don't like is the nursery putting up posters instead of face-to-face communication with the parents (eg. late arrivals result in penalties ) and when staff don't take my child's jumper off for an afternoon nap.

Both my girls have attended First Class Nursery Huddersfield. My youngest daughter currently attends -she is 17 months and joined at 9 months. I've never had a single problem, there are 3/4 ladies that work in my daughter's room. Staff turnover is very low and a lot have been there for years. My daughter
loves to go there and is well fed and looked after. The staff deserve lots of praise and recognition. The nursery is well managed and billing etc efficient. The owners are improving the building all the time. Would not hesitate to recommend - my two sisters babies will be there soon too ??

I would likely recommend the first class nursery to all parents who cares about the education, health, development, and safety level. All the staff are lovely and the manager is really helpful, they are there if you need them.

My daughter had been attending First Class Nursery Huddersfield since July 2014 when she was 12 months old. She loves the nursery and we often have tears at home time! She has been very happy at nursery and where there have been times she has seemed upset staff a quick to react to her needs and ensure

My son attended nursery when he was a 1 year old baby. He really likes it. All staff are so nice and competent. Children have a lot of activities. He is 2,5 now and still at the same nursery. Sometimes he doesn't want to go home. In the summer I will send my daughter to the same place.

Our daughter has attended this nursery since she was 7months. We looked into various nurseries and chose First Class Nursery. We have been more than happy with the care she has received. She is settled and always happy. I love how they add things to Facebook as the day goes on and I can then see what
she has been doing whilst at work. Our daughter loves being outdoors and she is always outdoors and doing activities that are exciting and linked to her interests. We could not recommend the nursery highly enough.

My eldest daughter has attended First Class Nursery Huddersfield since September 2013 and my youngest daughter started May 2016. My daughters love going to nursery. The activities provided are varied, fun and a good basis for their early education. Detailed feedback is given about their day. Provision
for the children is excellent, the nursery is bright and colourful and there are lots of varied equipment which is accessible all the time. Outdoor provision is superb. My eldest daughter loves playing outside on the climbing frame. the staff are very friendly and make the whole family welcome. I would definitely recommend this nursery.

Laura Barthorpe

Job Title: Nursery Manager Joined: 2018

My Name is Laura, I am the Nursery Manager at First Class.


I qualified in 2010 with BTEC Level 3 in childcare. I then went on to complete my degree in BA (Hons) Early Years with professional studies and QTS. I graduated in 2015 with a 2:1.


I started working at First Class in 2018 as a nursery practitioner and then was promoted to senior practitioner in 2019. From then, I remained a Pre-School senior until I was promoted to deputy manager in 2022. I have recently been promoted to nursery manager.


I am now mainly based in the office but I like to go into the rooms to help out when needed and at dinner times. I love my job and I’m passionate about working with children. I am told by my colleagues that I am kind, and always willing to listen and help. Goes above and beyond in my role as a manager.


My other roles within the nursery are safeguarding officer and health and safety officer. I have carried out many training courses including EYFS, food hygiene, First Aid, behaviour management and Mental Health First Aid.

Gemma Bradshaw

I qualified in 2010 with an NVQ Level 3.


I've worked at First Class since 2013.


I have worked in all the rooms in the nursery as a practitioner and also as a senior, I then became deputy manager in 2016.


In 2018 I completed a BA in Early Years.


I have been on many training courses including behaviour management, health and safety, food hygiene and first aid.


I've been told I am a funny, caring enthusiastic member of the team. I love working with children and I love to work with all age groups at First Class.
