First Class Nursery provides high-quality, integrated and flexible day care for babies, toddlers and pre-school children, close by to Huddersfield town centre.

Highly trained and experienced staff provide a wide range of stimulating and educational activities linked to the EYFS curriculum. The staff encourage and support all children to achieve their full potential, actively promoting the development of positive self-image within each child.

Children are given lots of opportunity to get creative in the outdoors, with woodwork, loose parts play and caring for the fruit and vegetables which are grown every year.

First Class has embedded the curiosity approach, where modern toys and technology are removed from the learning environment and replaced with everyday items to encourage children's natural curiosity and eagerness to explore and create.

First Class Nursery menus are planned in house and children, parents and staff are actively involved in this process. Good quality, fresh, wholesome ingredients are used to prepare meals. The nursery supports local suppliers where reasonably practical and cater for a variety of special diets. Nursery currently holds a Food For Life Early Years Award and continue to follow the Food for life ethos.

The nursery work in close partnership with parents and carers, maintaining strong, open and honest working relationships and good communication through regular newsletters, email updates, parents zone electronic journal, child's learning journals that can be accessed in the child's room and also parents evenings.

I was so nervous sending my son to nursery as he is very clingy to myself and his dad. All the staff were so supportive of both mine, my partners and especially my son's feelings. My son is now so independent thanks to this nursery and his progression and development has come on tremendously. I can’t
thank this nursery enough. My son now gets upset leaving nursery never thought I would see this in my entire life. So happy we picked this nursery to put my child in.

Our little girl started in First Class Nursery when she was 12 months old. When we started viewing nurseries initially, we were anxious about thinking of handing over our little girl for the first time - but from our first viewing of the nursery, and meeting the manager and the team, our mind was immediately
put at ease. We knew it was the perfect place for us when we were told ‘we know how precious everyone’s child is, and will ensure she is so well-cared for and happy here’. Because this is what everyone wants for their child. The team in the baby room did everything to settle her in - working around her naps, eating, playing etc. Now, she is so happy going in each morning and seeing her lovely key workers and little friends. Everyone in the nursery really cares about the children, and form bonds with them. The daily feedback you get is thorough and really helpful to hear what she has done each day. We also love the personalised app with updates on your child. Highly recommend!

My daughter has attended here over 2 years and has developed very well through the nursery. She has always come out of nursery happy and telling me about all the fun stuff she has done and about all her friends she's played with. The nursery followed our requirements regarding toilet training and other

My eldest son, who is almost 16, attended First Class many years ago. Three years ago, when we unexpectedly found out we were having another child, there was no question where we were going to send him. First Class, are their namesake, they provide 'First Class' care, enabling you to go to work, confident
and assured that your child will be well cared for and safe. I think First Class stands out from other nurseries as you feel that they truly love and care for each individual child. Sadly, both my sons have had to go to nursery from 3 months old due to my job, but as a professional working mum, this is one aspect of our busy family life I have never worried about. Both of my children have excelled at First Class with their language, speech and social skills which I put down to the nurturing nursery environment. I cannot make any higher recommendation than the manager and her excellent team if you want the reassurance of knowing your child will be well cared for, nurtured and loved.

My daughter loves the staff, I trust them as well.
They give her the best standard of care, paying the attention to every detail wherever possible that I can feel by having the daily feedback from them. The staff are also supportive of any questions/concerns I have with my daughter as she is my first
child. The staff offer variety of activities throughout the day. I especially love their policy to go outside as much as possible.
The nursery also respects as much as possible the policy of us, for example, not giving specific food, the routine etc.
I definitely recommend this nursery to friends & family.

I cannot speak highly enough of First Class Nursery. All 3 of our children have attended, so we have experience of all the different rooms and facilities they have to offer. The building and grounds are kept to an excellent standard. It is clean with a large variety of toys and offers a wide selection
of home-cooked food. The nursery provide a range of activities and plan things to do to get the children ready for school. The staff are amazing. They really go above and beyond for the children. All the staff are so kind and caring and treat the children as if they were their own. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this nursery to anyone.

My daughter has attended this nursery for four months now and is having a great time. The team are extremely attentive and create a stimulating and friendly environment. She is allergic to several food groups and the team go out of their way to ensure that she is well cared for. The building is great
with the baby room able to access their own outdoor space easily and plenty of space to pick up or drop off by car. I fully recommend.

After a long break from nursery due to Covid, we were a little nervous for our son to go back. He went back and settled into a routine with no problems the nursery were very welcoming, within a week he was transferring into a bigger room with no issues, he loved the baby room but Bumblebees is amazing,
he doesn't even say bye anymore as he's so excited to go in. I love seeing what he's doing throughout the day with Facebook updates, honestly couldn't ask for a better nursery and staff.

The nursery staff are excellent, very friendly and attentive. I've been reassured that my child is settling in well with the daily reports and updates via the app. At the parent's evenings his key worker made some spot-on observations about him that made me feel like the staff pay attention to each

My son loves First Class, as do I. I 100% trust the nursery will give the best standard of care and commitment to his development. I would recommend the nursery to family and friends. The staff team are great. My son has had two fantastic key workers. It's great I can use the app to track progress and

My son has attended since 9 months old. I will be extremely sad when he leaves this September as he will have turned 3 and start school nursery. My niece and nephews attended and First Class had been recommended to me. I expected to be happy with the level of care, but they have also surpassed my expectations.
I've always been offered the flexibility I need with my son's attendance, changing to suit my working hours at ease. I completely trust the staff team to care, teach and safeguard my child. Their outstanding Ofsted report is well deserved. Teaching standards and parental involvement is excellent. I haven't had one issue or concern in almost three years. I will definitely enrol my next child.

My daughter is very happy at First Class. She has a good relationship with all the staff and seems to have settled in really well. Staff are very welcoming and friendly and keep us well informed. This nursery despite being a large setting and part of a larger chain feels like one big happy family. All of the staff are welcoming and friendly, regardless of whether they have immediate contact with my son or not and take an active interest in his interests and experiences. All facilities are currently
bein updated to further enrich the high standard of provision already available. Despite being in the baby room my son experiences a wide range of exciting activities also available to older children and thoroughly enjoys his days here.

I would definitely recommend this nursery. The staff are welcoming any issue gets dealt with quickly even though there hardly have been any. My eldest attended and now my youngest is at the nursery but I'll be sad when he leaves, it's like our second home haha. Well done Birkbees you all should be proud

Laura Barthorpe

Job Title: Nursery Manager Joined: 2018

My Name is Laura, I am the Nursery Manager at First Class.


I qualified in 2010 with BTEC Level 3 in childcare. I then went on to complete my degree in BA (Hons) Early Years with professional studies and QTS. I graduated in 2015 with a 2:1.


I started working at First Class in 2018 as a nursery practitioner and then was promoted to senior practitioner in 2019. From then, I remained a Pre-School senior until I was promoted to deputy manager in 2022. I have recently been promoted to nursery manager.


I am now mainly based in the office but I like to go into the rooms to help out when needed and at dinner times. I love my job and I’m passionate about working with children. I am told by my colleagues that I am kind, and always willing to listen and help. Goes above and beyond in my role as a manager.


My other roles within the nursery are safeguarding officer and health and safety officer. I have carried out many training courses including EYFS, food hygiene, First Aid, behaviour management and Mental Health First Aid.

I qualified in 2010 with an NVQ Level 3.


I've worked at First Class since 2013.


I have worked in all the rooms in the nursery as a practitioner and also as a senior, I then became deputy manager in 2016.


In 2018 I completed a BA in Early Years.


I have been on many training courses including behaviour management, health and safety, food hygiene and first aid.


I've been told I am a funny, caring enthusiastic member of the team. I love working with children and I love to work with all age groups at First Class.
