Situated in Chilton Moor, Houghton-le-Spring, Chilton Meadows Day Nursery is an award winning, family run children's nursery offering a caring and happy learning environment.

Established in 2001, the experienced and qualified team of Early Years Practitioners at Chilton Meadows Day Nursery place children at the centre of provision and pride themselves on providing flexible childcare for children aged from 0 to 5 years old.

Rated Good in all areas by Ofsted in November 2022, Ofsted inspectors reported that “Children are happy and thrive at Chilton Meadows Day Nursery where staff treat children as part of the family.” and “Staff are very caring and attentive. Parents speak highly of the caring and nurturing staff and they value the support and advice that they receive.”

A well-resourced open plan interior is complemented by a large secure outdoor areas and spacious gardens. There is a large car park onsite to enable children to be safely dropped off and collected from the nursery.

Offering a rich learning environment for each child as they grow and develop whilst focusing equally on all areas of learning, the team of qualified Early Years Practitioners have established a setting designed to support each individual child’s development.

Our son has come on leaps and bounds. He is so much more confident and is always telling us about what he has learnt. He loves all of the staff and the toys at nursery. He is now even trying more food when he is at home. We can tell he genuinely loves coming to nursery.

Our son has really come on since starting here 6 months ago. His language, behaviour and playing have developed, and he's always so excited to come to nursery. The staff made a tricky adjustment to starting nursery easy and really helped him settle.

We watched our little boy grow from a baby to a confident young boy ready to start school and we couldn't have done it without all the staff at Chilton Meadows Day nursery. Every member of staff has been so caring, thoughtful, friendly and overall amazing.
Would 100% recommend Chilton Meadows Day
nursery for any family. We were regularly kept up to date with progress and what activities the children had done throughout the week and what was planned for the next term.

Chilton Meadows Nursery has been part of our parental journey since 2018! From the moment we went to visit the nursery, the warm and family focused environment was very appealing.
Sadly, we have finished our journey at Moorside as our youngest child begins Reception. Both of our children have nothing
but positive memories from their time spent at Chilton.
From a parental perspective, I would like to take the time to praise the truly wonderful staff (both past and present) for their attentive, friendly and caring nature. It is really appreciated especially as a parent handing over your precious children. It was never in doubt that they were in very safe hands :)
Finally, a special thank you to the manager! What a superb manager! No request is too big and she has been so supportive and reassuring, when dealing with medical issues regarding my daughter.
We will miss you Chilton!!

We can't recommend Chilton Meadows Day Nursery enough. The care they've gave to our daughter has been amazing. Everyone is so friendly, the nursery is very clean with great indoor and outdoor facilities and the food choices were excellent too.

My Daughter attended Chilton Meadows Day Nursery the year leading up to starting school and I can honestly say I'm so glad she went there. The nursery itself has such a family, loving, comfortable feel to it that both me and my daughter felt when going to view her place. The staff are so friendly, caring
and approachable.. this was confirmed more so by seeing the bond between my daughter and her staff when picking her up and dropping her off. Whilst in nursery my daughter took part in so many different activities, this was amazing to see on the parent portal along with the craft items and pictures she brought home.
I have reccomended the nursery to many friends as I honestly think the children get the love and support they need there and knowing that gives peace of mind that they are safe and in good hands with competent staff.

My child enjoys going to Chilton Meadows Nursery. The staff are very good at what they do and take really good care of my 2 year old boy. He has been going to the nursery from when he was 11 months old. It is like his second home. He always goes in happy and comes back happy.

Hello, my name is Joanne. I am a dedicated and highly qualified Nursery Manager and Safeguarding lead who has been part of the Chilton Meadows Day Nursery team since 2002. I am qualified in both Early Years and Leadership and Management.


I am Paediatric First Aid trained and I have experience in safeguarding children's welfare. My current role involves supporting the team, parents and carers to enable them to support the children to be happy, critical thinkers and reach their full protentional.


In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, cooking and upcycling furniture.

Hello, my name is David. I am a Nursery Director at Chilton Meadows Day Nursery. I am a qualified teacher and I also have a degree in Leadership and Management which I utilise to support the team of Managers at Chilton Meadows Day Nursery.


Experienced and qualified in Early Years Education, I also support the curriculum and ensure that the welfare requirements are adhered to at all times. I am a member of the Sunderland Schools Forum and represent the Private Voluntary and Independent sectors in the Early Years. I am also a Governor at a local primary school. I am able to use these links to support transitions for the children as they progress from nursery to key stage one.


In my free time, I enjoy DIY and travelling to new places and to Dublin to visit my family. I also enjoy volunteering at our local community group and spending time with my family.

Hello, my name is Rebecca. I am an Early Year Teacher at Chilton Meadows Day Nursery. I am a Paediatric First Aid trained, highly skilled, innovative and dedicated Early Years Teacher working with children aged three- to five-year-old in the Early Years Foundation Stage. I also lead the curriculum with the support of colleagues David and Joanne.


I am a very calm and friendly individual who takes time to get to know the individual needs of every child that I care for. I encourage children to learn naturally whilst also preparing the children for the transition to key stage one. I pride myself on my creativity and ensuring that all activities are both fun and educational.

I have Ba Hons in Journalism Studies; a PGCE Post Graduate Certificate in Education and am qualified at Level 5 in Leadership and Management. I am a member of the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) and Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), I have over 20 years of experience working within Marketing and PR agencies and in-house for clients in a variety of sectors.


I have a love of writing and I am passionate about innovation, making a difference, and positive outcomes for all children.


Outside of work I love to combine my passions for education, writing, local history, photography and digital marketing. I love photography, reading and travelling to new places.
