Children 1st Sheffield Nursery School is located within easy reach of Sheffield city centre. It has been refurbished to offer a bright and spacious learning environment for children aged from birth to five years.

A dedicated and enthusiastic team of early years staff are fully trained and experienced to support the children's healthy growth and development. The nursery has high staff-to-child ratios to ensure each child receives high-quality care.

The age-appropriate rooms have 'free-flow' access to a spacious outdoor garden which has designed to maximise the potential for outdoor play in all weather conditions.

The nursery also provides plenty of extra learning opportunities including Funky Feet dance classes for children aged between two and five years and a sports skills class with Sheffield Wednesday community coaches.

Children 1st Sheffield also operates an 'out of school' club for children up to twelve years of age and offers fully grant funded places for children aged three and four years.

Best nursery in Sheffield. My kid has been at this nursery since 2017. He is now 3 and this is the last year for us here. He loved it so much and of course, he will miss it. All the staff are friendly and care.


I strongly recommend this nursery to all my friends here in Sheffield.

The staff are friendly. The place is clean. There is a noticeable progress, you will notice in your child due to the various and interactive activities they do in the nursery. I really like the curriculum and the teaching staff are well-equipt with ways to deal with kids and their problems.

The Children 1st organisation at Sheffield is tremendous, my son attends 2 days per week and absolutely loves his time there. This is due to thoroughly committed, professional and caring staff at every level of the service. You cannot put a price on feeling and knowing that your child is loved and cared
for in a supportive, safe and effective learning environment. In my experience, the reassuring feeling and knowledge of this being the case, has come as standard at Children 1st Sheffield.

My 1st son started attending this nursery in 2010 at 3 months old until school. My 2nd son started age 7 months. The space of the nursery is excellent. Both children had the same key workers. Most staff are still in post, this speaks volumes given the age difference. All members of staff go above and
beyond to make sure the children are looked after to the highest standard and have all developed meaningful relationships with my children. The settling in period and transition between rooms are done in a timely manner. Age appropriate routines and boundaries are also put in place. Due to commuting, I have been late but staff have always remained patient over the years. My second son is happy and thriving and it gives me so much pleasure going to work knowing he is enjoying his time at nursery in a place where I know he is safe and being encouraged to learn through play.

The staff are really what makes this a great nursery. They are caring, thoughtful, and they are the engine behind all of the great systems that the nursery has in place like those used for communication, progress reporting and tracking/managing child development.


They make excellent use of the space

for each age group indoors. There also is quite a large outdoor area, which you might not realise in a short visit.

Children 1st nursery is a perfect place for a child to grow and nurture.


I was tense when I wanted to join my 10 months old baby, but the staff are very supportive.


My child got all the care she needs and now she has grown into a happy toddler.

I first used this nursery 12 years ago so when my third son was born and I made an appointment to revisit. I had been so happy the first time round but wondered if it had changed. This was 4 years ago now and I was not to be disappointed! As soon as walked through the door I recognised the same staff
and to me this speaks volumes. My son is currently in the nursery 4 days a week. He is very happy, the staff are amazing with the children and you can really see they love what they do. The staff work alongside parents keeping you fully up to date with a diary journal in the early day. I now have an app on my phone which shows me pictures and activities etc which he has done that day. The nursery is very clean and there is a cook on site to provide freshly cooked food. The location is perfect for me as it’s so close to the city centre. This nursery was recently awarded outstanding by Ofsted and I am not surprised. I can go to work relatively guilt free knowing my son is happy and safe.

From the moment I walked in I knew this was the nursery for my 1st born son, I was so apprehensive and worried about my son starting nursery but all the staff at Children 1st put my mind at ease. They are all so professional but in a kind and loving way, they all know my son's needs and wants and meet
them more than adequately. My son loves going to nursery, he has fun and learns at the same time.
Children 1st is fantastic and I highly recommend it. Actually, I do, I tell everyone about it.

My son has been going here for around 4 months. He came from a childminders, so the setting was completely new to him. Staff had so much patience whilst he settled in and kept me updated with his activities in the day. My son loves going to nursery, he has made so many new friends and his learning has
come on leaps and bounds. Getting new observations through is lovely as it allows me to see what he has done with his day and the exciting things he get up to. Management have been great with dealing with little niggles I had and put my mind to rest straight away. Staff are friendly and welcoming and I feel relaxed knowing that my son is in safe hands.

My son has been attending the Children 1st Nursery at Breedon House Sheffield since he was 6 months old and he has thrived since he has been there.
He seems to have bonded with his key workers immediately each time he has changed rooms. He's learning to talk at the moment and it seems that one of
the first things he has learnt is how to say the names of his key workers and friends at nursery and we always get a chorus or 'nursery time' whenever we park up outside in the morning. The fact that he is so enthusiastic about nursery really shows that he feels comfortable and loved when he's there and it makes it easier for us, as parents, to know that he's in good hands.
I've even recommended my boss's daughter to take her new baby there, which she has done and I wouldn't recommend a place if I wasn't confident of the care that a child would receive.

My little boy started this nursery in March and I have been so impressed with how thorough the nursery have been with his settling in period. Everything has been explained clearly. A fantastic nursery that I honestly cannot fault Children 1st in any way.
My child has been in various rooms as he's got older and staff have been consistently amazing. They genuinely care for each child and are all so knowledgeable about children's development. They work alongside parents to make
sure each child's individual needs are met, but also help make helpful suggestions that I, as a parent, can implement at home. It creates a great relationship between parents and staff. Their activities are so varied (and fun) and my child loves each day, especially when football classes are run! It's quite amazing how much is taught within a nursery setting, my 3-year-olds development and language skills have improved tremendously and I'm so grateful.
The management at this nursery are incredible. You can see it's run so well, it's organised and the team is passionate about they do. Managers are always happy to talk to you and give support and guidance.
I 100% would recommend children 1st.

Children’s First Sheffield is a fantastic nursery. My daughter loves everything about it - the well thought out activities, learning and development that is fun and interactive, engaging and varied events, brilliant staff who always go the extra mile and the friendship groups that the staff nurture.
The staff are fantastic - I really do believe that they care deeply about all the children and this can be seen by the affection the children have for them.
My daughter started at 11 months and will start school in September. I can honestly say I wouldn’t want her anywhere else childcare wise for 3 days a week. She is well looked after, excited to attend, cared for and with the nursery’s support has developed into a confident, kind, well rounded little girl. I’m always kept up to date with her day and development. Thank you so much!

My child started attending Children 1st Sheffield, approximately six months ago.
I can’t stress how patient the nursery team are with the process of settling in. This was a very challenging time for both me and my toddler who hasn’t previously been supervised by anyone other than myself.
Very strong
friendships have been formed between my child and the key worker and room leader. They go above and beyond to meet our needs.
Regardless of my child’s dietary needs, they have fantastic meals/snacks on offer without making them feel excluded by not eating the same foods when it isn’t always possible.
Managers also do everything possible to support parents and are extremely approachable.
I’m so happy to have found such a family style care setting in which my child can feel happy and safe and develop whilst learning so much through play.

My little boy started in January this year and I’m thrilled that we decided to go with this nursery. He has come on leaps and bounds since joining and Children 1st have really helped his development. The staff are lovely and everyone says hello and goodbye and everyone knows my little boy's name. They’ve

From our first visit, we knew Children 1st was ‘the’ place we wanted our daughter to grow learn and develop. Since attending here at Children 1st we’ve seen our daughter improve massively and come out of her shell, her speech and her imagination has come along on in leaps and bounds.
It's such a comfort
to see our girl happy and content within this environment.
The staff are superb! They’re all easily approachable and informative on how the day has been, key workers are brilliant in helping children settle in and are very caring and supportive, our daughter has always been taken good care of, then there’s the receptionist staff who are always there to help with any queries, whether it’s at the desk or over the phone, same goes for the management who are extremely approachable, although professional.
Children’s 1st @ Sheffield is like a big happy family! An enjoyable place to be. We are very pleased with children 1st @ Sheffield, highly recommend.

This nursery is brilliant, I moved my boy from another nursery and since being here I have seen a big difference in him. He really enjoys going to 'school' and telling me about his day. He looks forward to going too and never have any issues with him not wanting to stay. I love reading the comments
in his log book and seeing the photos of him on EY log. He always seems pleased to see his Key Worker and other staff there too. The staff have been nothing but welcoming and friendly, always quick to answer any questions or queries I have. I'm currently expecting baby number two, when I return to work I'll be sending them here too as I feel happy and confident knowing they'll be cared for well.

My daughter is now four and has attended Sheffield Children 1st since she was ten months old. During that time, I have been so impressed by the nursery. Their greatest strength is the staff, who are fantastic. You really get the sense that this isn’t just a job for many of them, but something they are
incredibly passionate about. I feel confident that my daughter is well looked after and that her individual needs are met. We both love the nursery - she looks forward to going each day and I feel genuinely sad that she has to leave to start school!

The most important thing to say about the staff at the nursery is that they're genuinely kind and understanding with the children they look after and always go an extra mile to keep children in their care well and happy. They are very knowledgeable, calm, confident and professional at all times. The
staff are friendly and polite in their communication with parents, they pay attention to parents' wishes related to their child's care and work together with parents to ensure children's well-being.
I've never seen a child left to "cry it out" - the nursery key workers are exceptional at helping children to settle in and thrive at the nursery. The nursery does a great job of helping children to develop and explore a lot of activities to find what they like the most. My child always looks very proud when he's showing off a new skill he's acquired at the nursery. With big thanks and warmest regards!

Deborah Thorne

Job Title: Manager - Early Years Joined: 1993

My Name is Deborah Thorne and I am the Early Years Nursery Manager for Children 1st @ Sheffield.


I have been working with children since the age of 16. I qualified as a Nursery Nurse in 1993 gaining my N.N.E.B Diploma in Nursery Nursing.


I then worked as a nanny for almost 2 years having sole charge of two boys Edward and Thomas who are now 19 and 21.


I started work for Children 1st Day Nurseries in May 1996 when they purchased the nursery that I was currently working in. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to grow with the Nursery right from day one and have gained a vast amount of experience. I have worked my way up from Nursery Nurse opening the baby unit, to Room Leader then to Deputy Manager and finally on to Nursery Manager in 2000. I have worked with all ages of children and enjoy the challenges that working with different aged children bring but I especially love the Early Years age group and this has been my area of specialism for a number of years.


While I have been with Children 1st I have managed the Newark Nursery for 6 months working with the team and the new Nursery Manager to build up occupancy levels. I then managed St Peters and St Paul Nursery for 2 1/2 years which I really enjoyed as this took me out of my comfort zone and I grew in confidence and was able to develop my own skills. I then came back to the Sheffield Nursery (home) in May 2009 were I have resumed my role as Nursery Manager for the Peter Rabbits and Early Years.


Through my role as Nursery Manager I have worked with diverse cultures and families with different needs and expectations, this has given me the tools to enable me to meet their different needs and make a real difference to children's lives, one of my passions is to be able to offer high quality childcare for ALL children regardless of their status.


My role as Nursery Manager also enables me to work with children with Special Education Needs (SEN) and become a linchpin with families and other members of my Nursery Team, giving our children the best start to their nursery education regardless of their abilities or needs.


I have also built a strong team who I work very closely with and feel I am a good role model to all staff members. I am a qualified NVQ Assessor and gained my Level 4 in Childcare and Education, I enjoy this very much and hope to continue to support all the trainee Nursery Nurses that train with us.


I became a Nursery Manager by chance as I had no desire to become one, I was more than happy being a Nursery Nurse and enjoyed the role as key worker to my children but through a passion for my work and the investment of Margaret I was encouraged to move up the ladder. I enjoy the challenges that being a Nursery Manager brings and feel that over the last 15 years that I have worked for Children 1st Day Nurseries I have gained so much and been able to give so much back.


I believe in the ethos of Children 1st Day Nurseries and am fully committed to our mission statement of: ‘Leading the way, shaping the future’ and providing high quality day care and education, my role as a Nursery Manager enables me to ensure that the children who use our setting are receiving the very best and I can ensure the quality is there all of the time this is why I have stayed with Children 1st Day Nurseries and will continue to stay until I am old and grey (if you let me)


I like lots of things about Children 1st Day Nurseries - the dedication to our small babies that we insist on, the quality environments, the sleeping outside in proper prams, the play experiences that the teams offer, the drive and passion of our teams and the on going commitment that we have to achieving the best that we can be.


I always feel proud when I attend outside training events as I know that out provision is up there with the best.


I hope I inspire other Nursery Nurses to be passionate and proud of the work that we do, and encourage new families to make that brave first step of bringing their children to nursery for the first time to start the education of their children.
