Ofsted rating for Co-op Childcare's Bristol Nursery is Good (April 2023)

Located next door to Bristol Temple Meads train station, Little Pioneers Nursery & Pre-School Bristol boasts tons of character! They partner up with parents by regularly asking for their feedback through questionnaires and parent meetings as you’re the most important person in your child’s life.

They know that little things can make a big difference, so they make sure to give children lots of hands-on experiences. They have areas for growing food (and eating it), make regular visits to local care homes and focus on doing their bit for the environment.

Your child will learn all about the environment and the community through a global eco-schools programme which will make them become a real environmental champion!

The nursery goes above and beyond for safety which is why ALL staff are paediatric first-aid trained. They have 5 Little Pioneers who help share their core values with the children and encourage them to make their own choices, express their feelings and make a difference in the world.

They have a Parent-Zone app which keeps you informed about what your child has been up to all day including observations, assessments, meals, and even toilet training progress!

Although the staff in the baby room were lovely I found the overall approach to communication disappointing. I logged a call with the main Co-operative Nursery switchboard about access to the online feedback and received no callback or resolution to the issues. I never saw the key worker who we were
assigned - who seemed to not work on the day my child was in the setting.

The setting wasn’t welcoming to parents entering the main door and it was frequently difficult to talk to staff in the office. Rooms were moved without any notice and left me searching for the group. I also was concerned about security on occasion when I could just walk in through the inner door with no one acknowledging or questioning me.

Generally, it felt like, as my child was only there one day a week, that we didn’t get the acknowledgement or attention which should be due to a parent with a baby in the setting.

Reply from Ramandeep Sandhu, Customer Service Advisor at Little Pioneers Nursery & Pre-School, BristolThank you for your review, I am pleased to hear you had a good partnership with the Baby room staff, however, apologise for your overall approach to communication. We try our best to address all concerns and compliments as quickly as we can while ensuring the daily running of the nurseries are to the highest standard for the children and staff. As we have rolled out the use of Tablets within the nursery setting, we have spent a lot of time learning our way around them to ensure we are using them to the fullest potential, I am sorry you were unable to access this.
Recently we have appointed a new Deputy Manager to the nursery setting who has worked within our other nurseries for a long time. We are aiming to develop a strong management team and develop the setting in lots of new and exciting ways. We also spend a lot of time supporting the rooms to create stimulating environments for all the children that are enriched with resources and learning opportunities. We want each child’s experience here to be special to them and we hope that in the future you will get to experience this.

The individual staff in the rooms are great; they are always enthusiastic and talk fondly and knowledgeable of my daughter. She has bonded well with them and is clearly in a caring environment and receiving focused attention. She would benefit from more structured activities. When picking her up she
often seems left to her own devices a lot and sometimes the children have been watching TV, which I would much prefer not to be the case. They do spend a lot of time in the garden, which is great.

The nursery has suffered from management and staff turn over this year, resulting in poor communication (esp. about room allocations), not knowing who is who and slow responses to emails. I used to really appreciate their flexibility, but company policy is to cut this out with administration fees and no ability to swap days - even if there is spare capacity that day. Also, things like the boards with people's pictures, roles and names are out of date which seems poor.

Reply from Ramandeep Sandhu, Customer Service Advisor at Little Pioneers Nursery & Pre-School, BristolIt's great news to hear you are happy with the care our staff provide for the children, we do take a lot of pride in getting to know our parents and children and building strong partnerships with them. Each room spends a lot of time each day completing planned activities with each individual child, these are brought together by setting individual next steps by the key person and then with the interest of the child. These activities are prioritised to be completed around the normal drop off and pick up times. We ensure all staff have the time to give an effective and thorough feedback of each child’s day to the parents/carers dropping off and picking up so at these busier times of the day, we do a lot of free-flow play where the children can decide, based on their interest what they play with. We also do a rolling snack so this again is children choice, this is when they are ready to come away from their toys/activity and have some fruit of their choice and a drink.
Regards to the management team, we have recently recruited a new Deputy Manager who has transferred from another Co-operative Childcare, this has given us the chance to begin our new journey within the office and can help support the rooms.
We are spending a lot of our time updating and sprucing up the nursery with lots of exciting new changes and displays.

Our son has been at pre-school here for only 4 months and he’s fitted in so well during this time, he loves that he can play outside when he wants and has made a lot of friends in the short time he’s been here.
He gets on very well with all the staff not just his key worker and his confidence continuously
grows. He loves it here and very excited his baby brother joins the baby room in a few weeks time.

The Co-operative Childcare in Bristol is a fantastic nursery. It's very rare to find a nursery that will look after your children exactly as you would and who provide a really lovely experience for all the children in their care.
Both my children have been and still are at the nursery and in the five
years we have been there we have never had a single complaint.

I find the staff in the nursery is very friendly and welcoming to my little girl. But the best review I can offer is that my daughter can't wait to go to nursery, she really enjoys her time there.

My daughter has been in Co-op Nursery in Bristol for last four years. She really enjoyed her time in the nursery, she has been looked after very well by nursery staff. All the staff members are quite friendly and well caring. We really liked this nursery as its more spacious compared to other congested
nurseries. The best thing about this nursery is the convenient timings, as it's opened for longer hours from 07:30 am to 18:30 pm which is ideal for working parents, as we need not rush to pick up our child. The staff are outstanding. I thank all the staff for looking after our daughter very well for last four years, she really misses everyone in the nursery as she has moved to school now.

My daughter started the nursery with the usual phase of tearful mornings and even pickups but staff were always welcoming with smiles and cuddles. In no time at all, my girl was loving it, regularly running in full of excitement. She has made some lovely friends and memories. Her allergies were always
nicely catered for.

It's a lovely nursery - staff are excellent and caring. It is in a very convenient position.
My daughter is very happy there. The only issue is that it is dearer than other nurseries. I wish that we could remain at the nursery but sadly will be leaving for a more affordable place.

The staff are very approachable, friendly and caring and seem to work really well together as a wider team. The staff engage really well with the children and form good relationships. Both our children have always enjoyed the food and mealtimes where they can serve themselves. The outside space is limited
but made the best of and resources inside are plentiful. In preschool, I did hope there would be more structured learning activities but they are clear about children choice too. They do lots of messy play which the children enjoy. They were good with recognising development needs and supporting this. Fantastic at supporting with inhalers/medication etc. The access times are good without additional wrap around charges. There can be problems with the billing but they have recently launched a new payment system which is expected to simplify things. Ultimately we feel our children are in a happy, safe, stimulating and nurturing environment.

My child started in the nursery (cats1) and is now in the attached pre-school. I have always found the staff to be very friendly and informative. Nothing I have asked for has ever been too much trouble. All staff are happy to help. Management always reply to any requests immediately and seem honest
and open. My child has always been happy here and therefore so am I.

My little girl has been attending this Nursery since January 2015. My main reason for choosing this nursery is location, being near to temple meads on my route to work.
She has moved up rooms twice since being there. Each time she settles really quickly and well. All the staff are friendly and welcoming,
my little girl willingly walks into her room and goes to staff when I drop her in, she is happy and has come on so much since being there.

My daughter has attended The Co-operative Childcare in Bristol since October 2015. We could not be happier for her to be there. All the staff - from nursery managers, room leaders and childcare assistants to the ancillary staff - are welcoming, warm and positive. They clearly care about the children
and I have never once worried about my daughter's needs being met. She is now in her third room at the nursery having progressed through the age groups and is thriving due to the interactive play and supportive learning environment. The facilities are excellent - spacious, inspiring and clean. We have regular progress updates and I feel connected to the staff if I ever need to discuss an issue with them. We also appreciate the extended hours which is invaluable in combining busy work and home lives. I rate the nursery extremely highly and have no hesitation in recommending it to other parents.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.397) out of 10 for Little Pioneers Nursery & Pre-School, Bristol is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 14 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 14 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.786 for Little Pioneers Nursery & Pre-School, Bristol is calculated as follows: ( (136 Excellents x 5) + (28 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 168 Ratings = 4.786
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.611 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Little Pioneers Nursery & Pre-School, Bristol is based on 14 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.85
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 92 number of registered child places is 18.4. 14 Positive Reviews ÷ 18.4 = 0.761
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
