Overall Experience 1.0 out of 5
My daughter attended this pre-school from September 2015-March 2016 while I was completing my first year at university.
In the 6-7 months she was there, she had 3 different key persons. There were always different staff in the room, staff leaving and new staff joining. I was never introduced to
new staff who were caring for my child through the day.
In the first term, Sept-Dec, I was charged just under £2000 which was a massive mistake by them, as they had not included any deductions. This was brought up only because I had contacted the council to find out what I was entitled to, and they soon realised I had been overcharged. The money was not reimbursed, but carried over to the following term so I was charged a lot less.
On my daughter's last day, they presented me with a file of her progress, which had no more than 10 pieces of paper; 3 were observations scribbled down from that afternoon. I never had any work given to me that my daughter had made at all from the whole term.
Reply from Bev Sharpe, Area Manager at West Downs Day Nursery (Winchester)Thank you for taking the time to review our nursery. We regret that your experience with us has not been as positive as we would expect. We strive to maintain consistency between key people and children however in situations of long term sick this becomes a challenge. This situation was communicated to all affected parents and we brought other colleagues in from sister nurseries, who covered for a number of months, to provide consistency.
I agree that an error in applying funding did mean that your fees were incorrect initially and this was rectified once you brought it to our attention.
All children have regular observations completed by staff with a focus on the child's development and progression. Without being able to see the particular Learning Journey you were given I am unable to make comment.
Once again I can only apologise on behalf of myself, and the team, that your experience at West Downs was not at the high level we pride ourselves on.

I am so grateful that I go a spot for my two and a half year old. The management is so understanding and friendly, the staff are well aware of the child's needs and are very friendly. It took no time for my kid to adjust here, which gave me the peace of mind I so needed after moving countries. Perfect
location, great activities for kids to be engaged at and reasonably priced.

My son has attended West Downs since he was 6 months old. He goes 2 mornings and one whole day each week. He settled in within a few sessions and the relationship between all staff and parents is excellent and always has been in my experience. The outdoor area is great for all ages along with the rooms,
and played a big part in us choosing this nursery. My son loves it there and his learning, speech and social skills are great. The 'Golden Values' are a fab idea. He is happy, which makes me happy!! I would recommend it for anyone looking for a centrally located nursery in Winchester.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.920) out of 10 for West Downs Day Nursery (Winchester) is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 23 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.920 for West Downs Day Nursery (Winchester) is calculated as follows: ( (254 Excellents x 5) + (22 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 276 Ratings = 4.92
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for West Downs Day Nursery (Winchester) is based on 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 68 number of registered child places is 13.6, which has been reached with 23 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
