Real world experiences at Green Park Day Nursery

There were exciting learning opportunities at Green Park Day Nursery in Reading as children ventured out on an exciting excursion to their local Costco warehouse.

Following an interest in shopping, children from the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on South Oak Way were delighted to visit the wholesale giant, armed with their clipboards and a checklist of items to tick off and buy, where they browsed the aisles and discussed the array of different products for sale using their speech and language skills.

After making their purchases at the checkout, children returned to the nursery with items including cucumber, carrots, pineapple and mango, which they helped to cut up using child-friendly utensils, before using as part of a special fruit and vegetable tasting activity.

As part of the learning inspiration, children have also enjoyed role playing as shopkeepers and customers in their imaginative play spaces, practicing counting money, discussing their favourite foods and sharing experiences of going on shopping trips with their own families.

Green Park Team Leader, Zhodi Constance explained; “As educators, it’s wonderful to see how real world experiences like this one spark interest amongst our children and help foster creativity. The group were captivated during their visit to Costco and this has left a real lasting impression, especially within their imaginative play. We can't wait to continue to provide our little ones with opportunities to learn and grow outside of the classroom setting.”
