Little Forest Folk Winkworth is a fully outdoor forest nursery, open year-round on the grounds of the National Trust property, Winkworth Arboretum. All seven areas of the EYFS curriculum are offered with a forest twist, including mark-making in nature, counting natural materials, and learning about the outdoors. Learning surrounded by nature fosters creativity and resilience, naturally strengthening children’s core skills and confidence.
Children spend their days exploring 121 acres of natural surroundings—from spotting ducks on the lake to building core strength as they walk, run, and climb, and observing the changing seasons. The nursery also benefits from a bespoke indoor space and a cottage garden, ideal for campfires, tool work, and mud kitchen cooking. Additional camp facilities include forest toilets, a nappy-changing station, hand-washing facilities, a napping tent, and a log circle for sharing meals.
The nursery maintains a strict staff ratio of one educator to four children at all times and for all ages, ensuring the quality of care and education provided.
Each day begins indoors with breakfast and free play, followed by time in the forest for a morning snack, exploration, and adventure. Lunch is served in the forest around the camp circle, followed by an afternoon snack. The afternoon provides more forest learning or an adventure walk, before returning to the indoor space for dinner.
The nursery opened in January 2025 and had its first inspection in October 2026; the results are currently pending.

On acceptance of a private place we’ll require payment of a £200 non refundable enrolment fee, which includes a set of our Roarsome Summer/Winter waterproofs, plus a refundable deposit of £450 - this will be returned to you at the end of your little ones time in the forest, providing all notice conditions have been met.

Overall Experience
I honestly can't believe how good this forest nursery is - we feel so lucky our daughter attends. The staff are exceptional, the activities are endlessly imaginative, and the setting is absolutely beautiful. Even the food is healthy and genuinely tasty. It's everything we hoped for and so much more.

Karlenne’s love for the outdoors started at a young age. When she was seven years old she became a Brownie as part of Girlguiding, then a guide and is now an active volunteering leader for the last 25 years. She enjoys taking them camping, teaching them to make and cook on open fires, respecting the natural environment and enjoying the outside natural world which even includes some international trips. It was through this involvement and passion that she learnt that she really loved helping children and learning new skills in the outside environment. She worked as a Nanny for a year and then worked as a level three practitioner for the last ten years and took her Forest School Leadership qualification.
She is excited to be joining Little Forest Folk and sharing her skills, and knowledge and smiles each day.

Miranda has always loved outdoor adventures, starting with many camping holidays growing up and, more recently, exploring the countryside of the UK. Her passion for working with children began when she was a guide leader, in which she loved taking the girls away and giving them a safe space to thrive.
Miranda brings hands-on experience supporting children across a wide age spectrum (1-12 years) and is backed by a solid understanding of neurodivergence and special educational needs. She loves keeping children active through creative obstacle courses and imaginative play and is looking forward to bringing new ideas to Little Forest Folk.
