Little Forest Folk Winkworth is a fully outdoor forest nursery, based year round within the grounds of the stunning National Trust property Winkworth Arboretum. Offering the full seven areas of the EYFS curriculum with a forest twist, including mark making in nature, counting natural materials & learning about the great outdoors! Learning surrounded by nature is a fantastic way to build creative, resilient little learners - naturally building core strength and confidence.

Children attending the nursery spend their days exploring the unique & magical 121 acres on offer - from spotting ducks on the lake, to building their core strength as they walk, run and climb, and observing the seasons as they change. The nursery also benefits from a bespoke indoor space, as well as their own cottage garden, perfect for campfires, tool work and cooking in the mud kitchen! Also available on camp are forest toilets and nappy changing station, hand washing facilities, napping tent & a friendly log circle for sharing meal times.

Little Forest Folk follow a strict staff ratio of 1 educator to 4 children, at all times and for all ages, allowing them to provide the quality of care and education they pride themselves on.

The day starts in the indoor space for breakfast and free play, before venturing into the forest for morning snack, followed by more time for exploration and adventures. Lunch is served in the forest around the camp circle, followed by afternoon snack. The afternoon allows for more forest learning, or maybe even an adventure walk, before returning to the indoor space for dinner!

The nursery opened in January 2025 and is currently awaiting its first Ofsted inspection.

We have been over the moon with our 3 year olds transition to Little Forest Folk - Winkworth. It felt like within days the team really understood, cared for & championed our little girl - she was no longer just a number but a little person and part of a team. The creativity of the team is amazing -
I'm blown away by the activities they come up with and the learning/ experiences our little one gets. Communication is always open to the level of the amount of breakfast our little one eats (if needed!), and I've never felt more happy & confident with a nursery setting. The staff are amazing - Karlenne & Charlotte have been outstanding & the bond they have with our daughter is wonderful. With being outside all day she never comes home overwhelmed, but full of songs, knowledge and enthusiasm about her day. Thank you team!
Reply from Little ForestFolk, Admin at Little Forest Folk WinkworthThank you so much for your beautiful review. We're absolutely delighted to hear how well your little girl has settled in at Little Forest Folk Winkworth and how much she's thriving in the forest environment!
It's wonderful to know that the team (especially Karlenne and Charlotte) have built such a strong and caring bond with her. Thank you for trusting us with her early years and for your kind support. We're so happy to have your family as part of our community!

Little Forest folk Winkworth is a magical place. It has been all we needed and more for our little one.
The staff members are SO lovely and clearly love what they do despite the fact that it must be exhausting for them with all the effort they put in to giving the children a wonderful day!
Nearly all
the time spent outdoors, fantastic free play and structured opportunities, nutritious food and loving care givers. I honestly can not fault it.
My mother's family is from Norway where Forest school-type education tends to be the norm, especially at nursery age. Little Forest folk reminds me so much of watching my little cousins growing up going to similar settings. 10/10 from a scandi family!
I truly appreciate the photos and updates we get during the day as well. It makes such a huge difference to see your little one's smiling face when you are missing/worried about them.
Thank you for everything you do!

Little Forest Folk at Winkworth is an amazingly caring day nursery. The staff ensure that all children are happy and settled, they send a very detailed report at the end of the day so that you know what your child has been doing. They use the app to keep parents updated on how the day is going for each
child. The children have breakfast inside the bungalow and then out into the garden. During the day, depending on the weather, they go out into the arboretum to the tepee specially set up for the nursery. The food is provided and is not only vegetarian but they also carefully cater for allergies. All staff are first aid trained and they teach the children 9 rules to keep them safe whilst at the nursery. Each new child has a home visit and also 2 settling in periods to ensure they are comfortable before being left in the nursery. The children have a specific set of waterproofs, with removable fleece lining, as their uniform and also have colour coded hi-vis jackets to assist the staff

My son started at the nursery about a month ago after being at a nursery in town. I'm really happy with the experience so far. The home visit was a great insight into how the staff interact with him, which helped me feel comfortable he would be well supported when he started. The biggest difference
I've seen vs his old nursery is that he's no longer upset when I drop him off; there's no more screaming and thrashing. Instead, he has a cuddle and sits down to breakfast. Similarly, he's calm when I pick him up, rather than worked up. The variety of activities I see in the photo updates is really impressive; the staff are clearly very imaginative. Overall I'm really happy we've sent him there.

We so thrilled to have found this nursery, after a disastrous attempt at settling our (quite sensitive) little boy into another nursery. The staff have worked with us, allowing a longer settling in period and a lot of flexibility. They have made such an effort to help our little boy find his feet at
the nursery, who is now absolutely loving it. They are wonderful with all the children; always playing and interacting with them with so much enthusiasm and kindness, and bringing so much creativity into learning and playing. They are just fantastic. We have had an issue with the admin and office side of things, but my review is purely for the nursery setting and staff there.
Reply from Little ForestFolk, Admin at Little Forest Folk WinkworthThank you so much for your thoughtful and heartfelt review. We're truly delighted to hear how well your little boy has settled in with us - especially after a difficult previous experience. Every child is unique, and we're so pleased that the flexibility and care offered by our team have helped him feel safe, confident, and happy.Your kind words about our staff's enthusiasm, kindness, and creativity mean a great deal. Supporting each child's journey with genuine warmth and joy is at the heart of everything we do, and it's lovely to know that this has made a difference for your family. We also appreciate your honest mention regarding the admin and office side - while this review focuses on the nursery setting, your feedback is important and helps us ensure that every aspect of our service meets the standard we aim for.Thank you again for your trust and support!

Little forest Folk Winkworth has been a breath of fresh air compared to two previous nursery settings we have used. In the short few months our child has been there we have seen his confidence and independence grow. He now skips off at drop off easily and has a huge grin on his face and is full of stories
of the day when we pick him up. We are so impressed by the energy and enthusiasm of each member of staff and love how nurturing they are.
From exciting adventure walks, to daily role play set ups, to learning more about nature and all the delicious meals - we couldn't be happy with LFF Winkworth!

My grandson is so excited to attend this nursery, which sadly was not the case with his previous nursery. He has a wonderful day filled with creative activities and exciting adventures to stretch both his mind and his body. He is genuinely cared for and staff help him with his emotional development
too.

Our daughter loves going to forest school at Winkworth. It provides a great balance to traditional nursery: lots of outdoor time, more freedom and exploration, and plenty of opportunities for creativity. I feel the staff are really invested in my daughter's wellbeing and getting to know her. And coming
under the Little Forest Folk umbrella means plenty of structure, guidance and resources as well. Overall we're really pleased and would recommend it to anyone.

Absolutely fantastic nursery. We were so reluctant to take our son out of his previous nursery when we moved house but we needn't have worried. This setting is absolutely perfect for him, the staff are fantastic, you can tell they really care about the children and their development. Our son is thriving
in this setting, learning so many new things on a daily basis, always happy, confident and well mannered. The core values of the nursery and those that they teach the children are in my opinion, very important. Being kind, looking after others (and the environment) and supportive of each other. The daily photo updates are lovely, and the monthly write ups are really informative. They feed the children a really nutritious fresh and balanced diet, if I'm being honest I would prefer if meat or fish were included in at least one meal a day given the cost of nursery but otherwise it's just an all round fantastic place.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.790) out of 10 for Little Forest Folk Winkworth is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 14 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.940 for Little Forest Folk Winkworth is calculated as follows: ( (158 Excellents x 5) + (8 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 167 Ratings = 4.94
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.85 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Little Forest Folk Winkworth is based on 14 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.85
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 24 number of registered child places is 4.8, which has been reached with 14 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
