Situated in a unique countryside setting in the Coombe Lodge Estate in Blagdon, The Old Potting Shed Nursery provides day care for children from 3 months to 5 years.

For their youngest children, the nursery offers 'The Stables', a cosy and comfortable area where babies are cared for by a professional and friendly team and engage in a range of sensory activities, both indoor and outdoor.

For toddlers and younger children, they have created a beautiful new space; the 'Apple Store' building, which has direct access to a spacious secure garden, sensory/ sleep room and a large open plan play room. This building is new for September 2025.

The Old Potting Shed offers a large enclosed walled garden as well as a spacious inside area for their Pre School aged children. Following the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, all children are offered a variety of activities, providing endless opportunities to play, explore and learn in a way that suits them.

The nursery place huge importance on learning in the outdoor environment and frequently explore the extensive and very beautiful grounds of the Coombe Lodge Estate as well as making the most of the amazing and purposefully created gardens.

As children reach the end of their time with the nursery, the team will help to prepare them for the next steps, and are always available for help and advice as you progress your child into school.

Open all year and available for full day and sessional care, the Old Potting Shed Nursery is a great facility for parents and families looking for a safe and stimulating day care provider.

I would highly recommend The Old Potting Shed. Our 2 year old goes there and he really enjoys it. We will also be starting our youngest there too, soon. The team are friendly, and provide everything needed, when leaving your child in their care

Our son was very shy when starting nursery and the staff have been so kind and supportive and really helped him come out of his shell. He now really enjoys nursery and bringing home all the different things they made that day. The staff are very friendly and welcoming.

I like that the nursery has a rural setting, there is no main road near the children and they have access to fresh, open air, and a large amount of outdoor area. The kitchen staff also deliver nutritional food that is clearly well thought out. There's also certain staff members who have taken the time
to get to know the needs of our child across his nursery experience.

We are also delighted to hear that you like our outdoor space, we are very fortunate to be able to explore the stunning grounds of Coombe Lodge estate along with having our own secure enclosed garden spaces for each of our rooms.

I was initially very apprehensive about my babies starting nursery, I found it very stressful and was torn in two about what to do. I found the nursery very understanding and accommodating. In particular the manager of the nursery was very friendly, reassuring and kind towards me during this overwhelming
time. The babies have now settled extremely well, and the staff are all so warm, friendly and approachable. I have gotten to know them all in such a short space of time and this has provided reassurance and peace of mind. They use an app, and keep me completely up to date of how the babies are getting on and this has been a great platform of instant communication. Highly recommend the nursery, mainly because of all of the lovely staff working there.
Reply from Lisa Marchent, Manager at The Old Potting Shed NurseryThank you for your 5* review, it is fantastic to hear we were able to support not only your children but yourself in settling into the nursery environment. We acknowledge that when the families are feeling reassured and secure this supports the children with settling into the setting also. The teams in all our rooms strive to provide a calm caring environment for all who come to the nursery.
I will be sure to pass on your feedback to the team

The staff at the Old Potting Shed, particularly the room leads, go above and beyond to help both the children and parents. They greet all the children with warmth, kindness and patience and help them work through any difficulties or big emotions they might be feeling. All stages of transition are done
sensitively and with the children's needs at the forefront.

Our youngest has allergies and the team are going above and beyond to ensure he is safe and enjoys his time.

I would wholeheartedly recommend the Old Potting Shed.

As our son hit 3 years old it's great to see him building great relationships with the nursery staff and other children. His development has been helped by this nursery and especially its setting, in the countryside with lots of space to play and explore.

My child really enjoys going to nursery, he receives a friendly welcome in the morning and as many hugs as neccessary throughout the day. A wide range of activities help with his development and maintain engagement. Daily updates on the App and the debrief when collected in the afternoon keeps us
involved and reassured that he is having a good experience
Reply from Lisa Marchent, Manager at The Old Potting Shed NurseryThank you for your 5* feedback we are delighted to hear that your child enjoys nursery and the team keep you informed throughout their sessions whilst at nursery. The team work hard to ensure that the parents feel informed about their child's time in nursery and the app really supports this parent partnership.

The staff are very caring, and our children really enjoy attending the nursery. We have two children who have attended from age 1. The staff really know our children and undertake a variety of activities. The outdoor spaces are lovely and the children go outside most days.

This is something that the team really pride themselves on! Our little girl has been attending since 1 year old and we have been more than happy with the setting and the care that they provide. The outside space is amazing, loads of resources inside and out for learning and development, and friendly staff. Extra events such as a sports day and parents play days
make it even more personal for parents. The app is well managed by all the team; always contactable and reply timely. Very grateful for the excellent preparation for school.
Reply from Natalie Purkiss, Head of Childcare at The Old Potting Shed NurseryThank you for taking the time to write a detailed 5* review of The Old Potting Shed Nursery. Parent feedback means so much to us and that it why we have really tried to develop opportunities for parents to be as involved as possible in their child's nursery life, through parent partnership forums, dads groups, parents stay and plays and all the extra curricular activities that parents are invited to join in with. We really appreciate you feeding back on this and are delighted that you are getting involved and feel we deliver a personal service. Best wishes Natalie

Our daughter has been at the Potting shed since she was 11 months and we felt that we were leaving her in safe hands from the start. The staff are caring and nurturing and she has had many opportunities to progress and develop in her time here. We especially love how much time is spent outdoors!

My eldest has been at the nursery for 3 years now and my youngest has just started this year. I'm so grateful to have found such a nurturing nursery. The staff are lovely and caring, and both kids settled in well. There's a nice mix of play and learning activities, lots of outdoor play and we get regular
updates about what they've been up. It's a warm, welcoming place, and both my kids enjoy going each day. Would highly recommend.

The Old Potting Shed is a fabulous nursery in a beautiful setting. My son is 3 and has been coming here for 4 months now ( he used to go somewhere else before) and I could not be happier that we found this setting for him. The Old Potting Shed has plenty of outdoor place where children can spend quality
time come rain or shine. We get daily updates via their app where you can read about the fabulous activities and games the teachers have planned for them. Just to mention a few : They read them books, teach them songs, let them paint and prepare fun obstacle courses in the garden. The teachers really do go the extra mile to keep the little minds entertained and busy. Every so often they hold parent's mornings as well where you and your child can stay and play and meet other parents. There is also an annual sports day , which is held in the grounds of Coombe Lodge and is great fun. My son still talks about it months later. Overall really, really happy with it.
Reply from Lisa Marchent, Manager at The Old Potting Shed NurseryThank you for your feedback. It is wonderful to hear that your little boy is still talking about the sports day and how much he enjoyed this event. We do love to make the most of the wonderful setting we have around us in the estate and the children enjoy exploring the grounds. We are very lucky to be able to offer this to the children to support their learning and development in a natural environment.

He is always happy to go and is greeted by his friends at the door most mornings. The app is good for communication and the manager is great at responding.

My little ones started at the nursery recently, having transitioned from another setting. I needn't have been apprehensive, as they were so well supported with the transition. The staff were kind and caring to my little ones and very informative to myself and partner.

Outdoor space was an important

factor for us, and this is something the nursery is not short of. The nursery is set in such a beautiful location and it's so lovely that the children can explore the grounds too!

Both our children are very happy to attend their new setting. The parent forum is a really nice touch - such a lovely way to find out more, give feedback and a bonus to meet some other parents too!

My littlest sleeps amazingly there - they work their magic on him and he seems to be really thriving. My eldest loves being outside and I love it when he comes home mucky from all his outdoor messy play.

Communication is great and we love getting updates on what the boys have been up to on the app.

Reply from Lisa Marchent, Manager at The Old Potting Shed NurseryThank you so much for your wonderful review, we are very fortunate to be based where we are. The children and staff love exploring the grounds and offering the children opportunities to engage in nature. Watching and supporting the children to think critically to work out how to climb the elephant tree, or understand the natural environment in navigating different terrains around the environment. We love to bring our learning into the outdoor environment to support all the children.

Our son really enjoys coming to the Old Potting Shed. The staff are really good at working with our son to help him develop. They have been fantastic in helping our son transition to being a big brother and actively asked how they could help. The staff really care and know our son well.
The food they
have is better than we have at home! Our son is trying lots of different things and has become really good at sitting and eating well.
The app the nursery use is really good for following along with what our son has been doing each day and there are images uploaded so I can see how he is getting on.
Overall the nursery has been fantastic.
Reply from Lisa Marchent, Manager at The Old Potting Shed NurseryThank you for your lovely comments, the team work really hard on ensuring the children are offered a variety of opportunities and the kitchen team work tirelessly to ensure the food offered is of high quality and nutritionally balanced. Overall, I am really pleased with the nursery. My child has clearly learnt a lot of skills whilst he has been in their care, including sitting to a table properly to eat food, walking nicely along side a pushchair and asking questions.
The outside space is fantastic and my child loves playing outside,
which I think has stemmed from playing outside so much at nursery
His speech has improved really well, and again, I think this is down to how the nursery communicate with him.
We would recommend this nursery to other parents and we are lucky to have our son here.

I cannot rate this nursery high enough. The level of care, attention and affection given to each child is outstanding. Nothing ever feels like a foolish request as a parent and often a staff member has gone the extra mile without being asked. My 3 year old has loved it there since day one and now my
1 year old is starting and I feel very happy knowing she's going to such a loving place. The outside space is wonderful and I can see how much effort the staff put in to help each child develop.

We cannot recommend the Potting Shed enough! From the moment we viewed it, we loved the warm atmosphere, the location and outdoor space as well as the friendly staff.
We also really appreciate the excellent communication with parents. The nursery regularly updates us with photos, progress reports,
and any important notices. It really gives us peace of mind knowing our child is in such caring hands.
Overall, this nursery has exceeded our expectations. We feel very lucky to have found such a wonderful place and our child loves coming here. Highly recommend it to any parents looking for a nurturing, fun and safe environment for their little ones!

We have a child in The Stables part of the nursery.
The nursery are passionate about working towards the relevant educational frameworks for our children and translating that into adaptive and varied activities. Focus week is a nice touch and not something we experienced elsewhere when our son was
in nursery.
The nursery has struggled for resource, which is a real shame and does seem to occasionally impact admin and being able to offer flexibility in service provision.
Overall our child is happy at the nursery and loves their key worker, which is the main thing.
Reply from Lisa Marchent, Manager at The Old Potting Shed NurseryThank you for your review, we appreciate the feedback and yes generally as an industry the staff recruitment has been an impacting factor to the service we are able to provide. However we have still maintained our high standards of provision and expanded the nursery both in child occupancy and staff team over the course of the 3 years under the YMCA Dulverton Group. We pride ourselves in the team and the high quality of our child centered curriculum.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.940)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.940) out of 10 for The Old Potting Shed Nursery is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 39 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 39 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.940 for The Old Potting Shed Nursery is calculated as follows: ( (441 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 467 Ratings = 4.94
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Old Potting Shed Nursery is based on 39 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 78 number of registered child places is 15.6, which has been reached with 39 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
