At Maggie’s the team believe that every child deserves a nurturing and stimulating environment where they can play, grow, learn, and thrive. Children should spend as much time as possible in the great outdoors being nurtured with nature, feeling free to run and explore vibrant, natural spaces. That’s why at Maggie’s they seize every opportunity to be outside, with children frequently enjoying the forest school, alfresco dining and outdoor sleeping.

Over the past 5 years, Maggie’s @ Oakwood has evolved to become one of the UK’s leading nurseries. Formerly part of Children 1st Day Nurseries, and created by Children 1st’s founder Margaret Mason OBE, the nursery now exists to provide children with an unparalleled nursery experience in an award-winning environment.

From thoughtfully designed playrooms to the enriching, award winning outdoor play areas and forest school, every aspect of the nursery is crafted to inspire curiosity and foster a love of learning. They are committed to creating a safe, supportive, and joyful space where children can explore their interests and develop their unique talents, preparing them for a bright and successful future.

Kindness is one of their core values, they strive to foster an atmosphere of empathy, respect, and inclusivity, where every child learns the importance of kindness and compassion towards themselves and others.

The team would love to meet you and your little one so that you can experience the setting.

Our little boy has been attending Children 1st @ Oakwood since he was four months old. He is now eight months and in that short amount of time, has flourished. The staff are like a second family, and he always has a big smile when his key worker greets him in the morning.
The communication you receive
from the nursery is excellent, with an update at pick up on what they have done throughout the day, regular observations uploaded to the app, including areas of learning and development and individual learning plans.
There is no surprise the nursery has received ‘outstanding’ from Ofsted. Thank you, Children 1st!

I cannot say enough how wonderful this nursery and the staff are!
My little boy has been attending since July 2020 and in that time he has developed into a confident, inquisitive and happy child, supported by his key workers. The nursery has a very nurturing atmosphere and the staff will go out of
their way to support not just the child but the whole family as well.
The experiences offered in the classroom and out in the forest school are second to none and I can drop him off knowing he is going to have a fun-filled day with key workers that really care about him!

My child has attended this nursery since she was 9 months old and is now over two years old. Her room leader and key worker are incredible and exactly the kind of people that you want to look after your child; they are loving, encouraging and have such positive energy. All staff are very approachable
and visible within the nursery. The resources are all new, and my child loves telling me about the forest and the animals on site. My child is very happy here.

What a wonderful nursery! Incredibly friendly and helpful staff and a huge range of activities the children partake in - including forest school. The facilities and grounds are amazing! My child has massively grown in confidence since attending Children 1st @ Oakwood, particularly with his independence
which is thoroughly encouraged here and there are loads of ways parents are made to feel part of the nursery. Food options are incredibly varied and broadened my little one's pallet. I'm regularly informed about my child's progress, as well as what's happening at nursery and upcoming events. I'd absolutely recommend this nursery!

My son started here in June 2022 when he had just turned 1. He struggled settling into nursery life (just drop off) to begin with but the staff at Children 1st Day Nursery were amazing with us all. They are all lovely and caring and they very quickly created a plan to distract him at drop-off and try
to get the same staff to greet us at the door so he could recognise a familiar face. He soon settled and he absolutely loves going! The range of toys and facilities is amazing, he's always doing something new. He eats every single bit of food put in front of him (even two portions sometimes) so the chef must be good! The communication is great and very well organised! I love that the managers are very visible and like to get involved. 100% recommend this lovely nursery.

Both my grandchildren are attending Children 1st @ Oakwood and have grown massively with their development and confidence. The experiences they have been able to be a part of from looking after ducklings to exploring the forest and loads of activities we couldn’t even imagine. When our grandchildren
visit they tell us all the wonderful things they have been doing. The staff are so supportive and use goals to help both the children achieve. The management team have always been supportive towards myself and the rest of our family. This really is a lovely place for children to thrive and has such a homely feel to it. The staff members should be proud of the hard work as we can defiantly see the care, time and patience they have for the children and families. Thank you.

The nursery has done a fantastic job with my baby. He speaks now and he is more confident and well-behaved with other kids. He knows he needs to "share" and this has helped also with his little sister. The outdoor space is spectacular! Kids can play with the animals, grow vegetables, play in the sandpit
and spend entire days in the woods!

I was invited along to graduation. Overall, it was a lovely afternoon. Lots of thought and detail were put into the afternoon and the little touches in the gift bag were a very nice touch. It was an afternoon enjoyed by many, thank you for all your hard work.

Cannot fault Children 1st @ Oakwood Day Nursery. It's a joy to hand our daughter to the nursery staff because you can tell that she's excited to go with them. Communication is always good and the facilities are second to none. There is nowhere else that comes close.

We could not be any happier with our's and our little boy's experiences at Children 1st @ Oakwood Day Nursery. Right from the start, they made our son's transition to nursery as smooth and easy as possible.
All the nursery staff go above and beyond each day, explaining exactly what has happened that
day during our son's stay and we love reading what our son has been up to in both his book and on the app. Our son has really progressed in the last few months and we definitely have everybody at nursery to thank for that.

Both of my daughters attend this setting one is in the baby room all week and the other goes to the after-school/holiday club once a week. The nursery itself is in a beautiful location with lots of outdoor space where my eldest daughter tells me about going on adventures in the forest and helping to
look after the animals. She also loves playing in the role play areas she tells me there’s a little shop, a post office, and a pretend house and garden! My youngest daughter who has just turned 1 year and 1 month (started at the nursery when she was nearly 11 months) has settled really well and absolutely loves all the ladies that help look after her. Every day she comes home with a diary saying what she’s been up to etc I also look forward to seeing the photos that get sent home weekly. So far communication has been brilliant on all levels from daily verbal feedback to information emails and invoices. I feel that both my daughters are 100% safe and cared for here, Thank you all so much!

My child has been going to nursery since September, age 9 months. Every time she is there we have nothing but smiles and laughter. The staff are amazing with her and she has really bonded with her keyworker and two other staff members.
I'm so proud of the little girl she is turning into. She certainly
loves nursery lots.
Thank you Children 1st.

A modern, beautifully refurbished and caring nursery. My child has settled in with ease and it is clear how much he enjoys attending and interacting with the staff. The staff have set well thought out plans to improve development and regularly keep parents updated on this with the online app. I would
highly recommend Children 1st @ Oakwood.

An absolutely fantastic nursery to say the very least. The renovation is beyond impressive and far more than I imagined. When I walked around for the open day, I was not prepared at all for how brilliant it really is. The staff and lovely owners of this nursery are amazing and I am very proud and grateful
to be able to send my son to such a beautiful nursery.

I was so nervous about returning to work and leaving my little boy in nursery so young, however, Children’s 1st Day Nursery have been absolutely amazing with my little boy, and the communication between myself and the nursery is amazing, they always keep me informed of everything he’s been doing in
the day and send the most lovely pictures. My little boy has a food allergy and they have been so good catering for him and he doesn’t miss out at all on anything, I wouldn’t send him anywhere else now, incredible!

Our child was in this nursery for two years and it was then taken over by Children 1st in 2020. Beautiful building recently refurbished which has been the main focus in the past year. Unfortunately, since being taken over by Children 1st the staff turnover has been very high. On a couple of occasions,
we dropped our child off with someone we have never seen before. Communication has been poor during this time and we got few photos and updates. To start with there was little focus on a keyworker or offering some continuity for children. Whilst some children don’t mind who is looking after them there are other children who are more aware of their carers. Building a connection with a keyworker makes children feel more safe and secure providing a safer base for development and learning. I will say all the staff members we met were lovely. I just feel there needs to be more improvement in overall staff stability and communication with parents.
Reply from Laura Wildin, Senior Manager at Maggie's NurseryDear Miriam,
Thank you for the review. I hope your son has settled into his new school since leaving us this summer. I am disappointed that you didn’t feel satisfied with our takeover. I would have welcomed the opportunity to discuss this with you, as I was not aware. We do appreciate that change is not easy, and communication has been made more difficult with the challenges that Covid presents. Whilst we facilitated many zoom meetings I appreciate for parents this isn’t the same as coming into nursery. Whilst your son was with us, we did see one member of the existing team leave as unfortunately, she wasn’t at the standard we were looking for, and another team member later left due to her own personal circumstances. This isn’t ‘high staff turnover’ and our staff team has grown to meet the growing occupancy of the nursery. We agree with the importance of keyworkers and the role they play in a child’s learning and development which is why we have such a strong system in place.

My daughter joined the nursery as a baby prior to it being taken over by Children 1st and whilst we chose this nursery due to the lovely nature of the staff members this has only served to enhance the nursery further with even more wonderful members that have been added to the staff team. As a family,
we have seen an overall amazing transformation of the utilisation of the building and grounds to further enhance the potential of all ages of children's learning and development to the communication between staff and parents. Our daughter loves going to nursery and is always eager to attend and tells us about her day. We have noticed increased confidence as we are also notified of our daughters next steps and targets so we can support her at home too. I am so delighted that our daughter is a part of Children 1st Day Nursery and we look forward to another few years with them. Definitely recommend this nursery without hesitation.

Current Review Score: 10.0 (9.958)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 10 (9.958) out of 10 for Maggie's Nursery is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 38 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 38 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.958 for Maggie's Nursery is calculated as follows: ( (436 Excellents x 5) + (19 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 455 Ratings = 4.958
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Maggie's Nursery is based on 38 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 160 number of registered child places is 32, which has been reached with 38 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
