Portland House is an Ofsted Outstanding setting (July 2023) situated at the edge of Lindley and has strong links with the local community and schools.

The nursery has bright, spacious rooms that are highly resourced and are led by highly qualified and experienced practitioners.

The outside areas are imaginatively designed with nature trails and a tree house, providing fun and challenges for all age groups.

A home-cooked menu and plenty of outdoor play ensures each child will develop both a healthy body and a healthy mind.

We couldn't be more grateful for the wonderful experience our daughter has had at Portland House Nursery. She joined a few years ago, and from her very first day we knew she was in a safe, caring, and nurturing environment. The staff are not only professional and highly skilled, but also genuinely warm
and attentive - they always took the time to understand our girl as an individual, helping her grow in confidence, independence, and kindness.
Over the years, we've seen her blossom from those first hesitant steps into nursery life to becoming a curious, enthusiastic little learner who loves exploring the world around her. The team at Portland House have played such a big role in her development, providing not just excellent early education but also teaching valuable life skills and encouraging friendships that made her nursery years truly special.
Our baby graduated this summer, and while it's bittersweet to say goodbye, we leave with the happiest memories and the reassurance

My child has attended Portland since she was in the baby room, and ever since she was first settling the staff have been warm and caring towards to her.
Throughout my child's time at Portland, we have seen growth in her confidence, social skills and communication.
The staff seem well trained and
my child is kept well stimulated throughout the day.
She has come on in the past few months, her writing skills and pencil control is great, I can tell they are concentrating on getting the Pre Schools 'school ready'
If there was one thing I would mention is the older she has got the less communication we get, you stop getting daily photos/report of the day on the app and it's all verbal by Pre school age, it would be nice to see more photos throughout the month of what she has done.

My review is based on 1) Admin 2) Pre-School.


Recent changes to the fee, was not communicated effectively which lead to confusion, as well as additional payment to be made. This could have been avoided.


Since my daughter joining pre-school, the level of care is different to the other rooms she

has been in. Comms is very limited due to her the impression of busyness and time it takes to attend a buzzer, could be waiting up to 5+mins.

My little boy settled into nursery life very quickly at Portland House and he is always excited to join his friends when we drop him off in the morning. The Daisy baby room team have been fantastic in supporting his development through a range of creative activities (in the baby room and outdoors in
the garden). I really appreciate the thoughtful updates that we receive both in person and via the nursery app. My little one has built lovely relationships with the team and I am very pleased that we chose Portland House. Thank you to all the staff.

I'm pleased with Portland house and how it is run. The staff are pleasant and knowledgable, there have been instances however where my child has come home with soiled underwear, he is toilet trained but needs help wiping sometimes / ensuring he's clean. Secondly there have been a couple of occasions
whereby he has been injured, I've noticed this when it comes to pick up time and it hasn't been noted down.

My daughter has been a part of the nursery since Jan 2022. We love Portland house, the staff have been amazing throughout and show a lot of care and attention and are always available for a chat for any concerns or anything relating to the children. All food is made in house and fresh ingredients are
used - my daughter enjoys all her meals and will try lots of different things to support her varied diet at home.
The outside space and the effort to be outdoors daily is fantastic - the outdoor space is varied and good for the children.
The children are dressed for outdoor wear in nursery provided overalls and know to change into their wellies.
The only downside I have found is that the nursery management can be quite inflexible with swapping days in the week to accommodate any family events/flight days for holidays etc. it's just not going to happen.
This is literally the only fault I can think of. I am planning to send my second child there in the new year too!

Love this nursery. My child has grown in confidence and is more than ready for school now. Staff are friendly and welcoming and my child feels safe and looked after every day. The food is amazing and has really encouraged my child to try different things.

Outstanding progress being made by my son RH under the care of his Key Worker in the toddler room. I am fully informed of daily activities and his potty training progress through the app ParentZone. He is happy and speaks highly of his daily activities which range from outdoors to indoors. Each carefully
crafted to support his physical/ emotional and all over well being. Different religious celebrations are celebrated which teach my son mutual respect and inclusivity. When he comes home full of stories we continue the knowledge as a family.
Icing on the cake- food is prepared by an award winning chef!

Strengths - The outside facilities. Focus on health and wellbeing. Staff generally good and friendly upon collection. My boys enjoy good relationships with lots of the members of staff. Good at proactively flagging any incidents to ensure we’re aware of anything to look out for e.g bumps/grazes. Some
of the holiday club activities. Variety is good and involves visits to support wider development, e.g. visit to supermarket to purchase recipe ingredients for baking that day. Opportunities - Admin is poor. Billing is frustrating - holiday club fees are not updated in bills and parents expected to re-calculate. Multiple emails involving lots of back and forth. Minimal visibility of holiday club dates. I’ve had to chase this several times - often only a couple of weeks in advance despite Kirklees releasing full-year term dates. Food menus rarely get updated in reception areas. Today’s menu (Wednesday 17th April showing Monday menu) why have them on display when not updated? Basement still not repaired.

We are over the moon with our child's progress within the Bluebells preschool room. She always leaves so happy and full of energy after having lots of fun. One of the staff members is a fantastic key worker and whenever I get the opportunity to see her, she always keeps me updated on what my child has
been doing and how she is getting on. She is always encouraging my child and helping her develop.
Also a special mention to another staff member who my child has also developed a great bond with. She is lots of fun and her relationship with the children is brilliant, she is so kind and caring. My child loves being 'crazy' with this staff member (my child's words).
The stay and play sessions have been great and I attended one where I could be involved in the French lesson. This is such a good idea and it was brilliant seeing all of the children engage and really enjoy it.
Overall, we couldn't be happier with Portland House and very glad we could send both of our girls here.

Our experience with Portland House and the Daisy baby room has been excellent. Our child loves going to nursery and gets great benefits from all the wonderful and varied activities the staff do with them. He has great relationships with the staff and is progressing brilliantly. I feel completely content

Staff are very friendly with my child who loves coming in. My eldest child also attends for holiday club, which they also love. The outdoor space is fantastic, and I really appreciate that the children are out in all weather (in appropriate clothing!). I feel that both my children are very well cared

The team at Portland House Nursery is amazing. My son loves going there and they are always doing great educational activities with them. My son is now in the toddler room, the transition from the baby room to the toddler room was really smooth and took away a lot of my worries!

Our daughter joined prior to starting school age, bless her, as she was at after school club where I work. The transition from starting reception and also a different after-school club was worrying. However, we were pleasantly surprised and happy when we went to look around at the after-school club.
The staff, including management, have been wonderful. Our daughter spends time as well in holiday club. She always comes home happy as she has had a fantastic day. Our daughter is an outside girl. As well, I want to say that they are very accommodating, especially when I was ill. I had to ring up to ask if they could have her for that day. Obviously, they squeezed her in. Which gave me time to rest. Our daughter has made a lot of friends at Portland House Nursery & After School / Holiday Club which is lovely. Also, I have made some as well.

My son has been attending Portland for about 6 years. The staff have been excellent in supporting and teaching him new things. He often came home with new knowledge. When he reached school age, they prepared him for the transition in their preschool room by explaining what would happen when he went
to school. Since starting school he has been attending after-school club which he loves as he can play with his friends. He also goes to the holiday club and does various activities which are educational or just simply playing with friends either indoors or exploring outdoors weather permitting. The food is excellent and nutritional and he always looks to see if there are any goodies left over for him to bring home.

I cannot recommend Portland House Nursery enough to other parents. It's an excellent childcare provision providing amazing care and activities, and they genuinely care.
My daughter attended four years ago, and my son has been there for three years now. It's his last few months before school. He has
excelled at Portland and the preschool room he is in now, he is coming on leaps and bounds with his speaking and phonics and beginning to write his name. The food is outstanding, and my son eats everything at nursery (I wish he did at home!).
I'll be sad when he leaves as we've built a good relationship with Portland. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a brilliant nursery for their child.
My daughter, aged eight, also attends their holiday fun club in the holidays and loves it. The activities are great and she's kept busy all day.

My son has attended this nursery since he was nine months old. He is now in the preschool room. He is very happy to come to the nursery every day. The staff are so friendly and nurturing, and I’m very pleased with his development. The communication and support for parents is excellent.

A very positive first experience of fun club for half term holiday. The staff were very welcoming. The opportunity to pop in the day before for a quick familiarisation with staff and the building was much appreciated. My daughter had a great time and I’m sure that meeting some staff the day before contributed
to this. Lots of activity in the day and outdoor play, and my child coming home covered in mud and smiling is a sign of a great time! Thank you.

Job Title: Nursery Manager & Senior Manage of Portland Nurseries Joined: 1995

I am the Manager of Portland House and have worked for the Portland Nurseries group for 26 years. I joined the Portland House team in July 1995 as the senior of the baby room which I led for 6 years before taking on the role as Manager.


I have always worked in childcare and gained my NNEB at Percival Whitely College. In 2007 I began my journey into further education graduating with a BA (Hons) in Childcare Management followed by my Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) whilst continuing to work full time managing the nursery.


I have a vast wealth of experience, knowledge and understanding of the Early Years Sector and have led Portland House with my team to achieve three consecutive Ofsted Outstanding. The only nursery in Kirklees and Calderdale to do so. An achievement I am extremely proud of. As one of the senior managers in the Portland Nurseries group I support, train and lead staff and managers across the 4 sites.


I love spending precious time with my family and friends. I have two children Harrison and Elise who both went to Portland House as young children. My daughter now works alongside me at the nursery as an early years educator. I absolutely love being creative & crafty. I love cooking, walking and also Zumba.
