The Old School Nursery is a beautiful rural nursery situated in Honington at the Sleaford/Lincoln fork (A607/A153) just 10 mins from Grantham centre and the next village on from Barkston.

The nursery offers government funded places from nine months old (subject to eligibility), government funded places for three and four-year-olds and is registered with the Government Tax-Free childcare scheme.

The nursery is Hygge accredited - Hygge is the Danish way of living, incorporating mindfulness, a sense of being, and caring for yourself and others. The children enjoy a calm and relaxing atmosphere where they can explore, learn through their experiences and have fun.

The nursery garden has a wealth of experiences for the children. A sensory path, known as the Mindfulness walk, a tee-pee, a large 'Fort' incorporating things to climb, tyre-swings and a slide, large tractor tyres to climb, and a viewing station so that the children can say Hello to the donkeys and the ponies in the field next door. The garden also has raised beds where the children grow vegetables, which are then cooked by the resident chef. The nursery prides itself in being sustainable, and the items in the garden have been transformed from other items, such as pallets, old tyres, wood left-over from projects.

Inside, the nursery promotes a feeling of home in a calming environment, where the children are free to explore the natural open-ended resources, to enhance their learning. The practitioners are resources too, who sit with the children, join in their play, and enhance the learning opportunities when the time is right, by asking open-questions, and showing the children how to find out things.

A small setting in a small village location, The Old School Nursery really is a hidden gem, where the families become an extended family, where they care for each other and thrive on the enjoyment they have.

My son has thrived since going to the nursery, his speech has come on leaps and bounds. All staff are approachable and considerate and willing to go above and beyond to make things easier for the child and family - from finances, to dietary requirements, to learning capabilities.

The Old School Nursery provides excellent support and care for our son - he gets nutritional meals, a fantastic outdoor area for exploring, playing, and exercising as well as walking around exploring the village. The staff are great in their communication and provide a variety of learning activities
to help prepare him for school as well as activities for all areas of development and for fun! My daughter who is now in school still talks about the nursery and enjoys visiting and it's hard to get them both to go home sometimes! The nursery has thrived under Taylor's management and each staff member is always cheerful, patient, kind and welcoming each day. We have had such a wonderful experience here and we will be very sad once our son leaves to start school but we know he has had a fantastic few years from starting there as a baby, taking his first steps in the garden, and now recognising letters and writing his name - he has been set up for the next chapter. Thank you so much!

My daughter started The Old School Nursery last September. It became apparent very quickly that she was struggling to settle into a new routine away from me. The nursery were nothing short of amazing in helping her to build up her confidence and trust by putting a plan in place with me to get her used
to it. Sh absolutely loves it here, as do I. I feel very lucky she attends such a brilliant nursery!

Such an amazing, homely nurturing nursery setting. Our little boy started in January 2026 and it's always such a daunting experience having your baby start nursery and leaving them with people you don't know. After a few short weeks, they feel like family and our little boy gets so excited on his nursery
days.
From initial enquiry when I was pregnant to being shown around was outstanding. Every question or query has been answered with a reassuring, kind and friendly manner.
They are so well cared for in every aspect and they eat amazing well. Hats off to the chef! The app is amazing and informative seeing what your child is doing and regularly uploading photos.
I am looking forward to seeing our little one progress through nursery, forming friendships and preparing for his onward journey to primary school.
Reply from Taylor Stewart, Nursery Manager at The Old School NurseryThank you, We understand explicitly how hard it is to leave your child for the first time, and are so please you have felt supported in this huge transition.

The staff are amazing. They are good at communicating and nothing is a silly question. They are very supportive and understanding and my daughter loves going everyday. They are good at nurturing friendships between the children and helping out with organising play dates and passing on messages to other
parents which is absolutely going above and beyond. I love that there is so much time for messy play and playing outside.

Calm and nurturing environment for babies and toddlers. Really lovely staff and good communication with parents - they use an app to update through the day and always have a clear handover at pick up. Really pleased with the care for our daughter and would recommend to others!

Do not pick any other nursery in this area! Having lived in the area for 25 years and had experience of many local settings, the Old School Nursery by far exceeds others.
Each child is cared for as an individual in a home from home setting. The small size means the care is like a large family but
with the advantage over child minders of social interaction with a few more children. There is an outdoors ethos and nurturing environment. Whether your child has a routine or each day goes with the flow the nursery adapts to the little one's needs. Their comprehensive learning environment I cannot believe what my daughter has learnt in terms of emotions, counting, speech, communication and motor development. Most of all the staff are lovely and my daughter reaches out for them each morning. She even asks at 2 years old to go and play at nursery on our weekend! I would definitely recommend this nursery to any parents.

What a wonderful nursery in a beautiful setting. I personally find the app fantastic. Daily updates are so reassuring and make us as parents feel included our daughter's day, and also gives us nuggets of information that we can use to aid conversation with her when she gets home. Staff are so caring,
very helpful and extremely flexible. The team are genuinely interested in her development and are proactive in ensuring the schedule works for you. I trust my daughter is in safe hands when she's there.

We've been part of this nursery for years now, with both of my children attending, and I honestly can't recommend it enough. The setting is just wonderful - homely, welcoming, and full of opportunities for the children to engage with nature and each other. I really love the hygge approach, and I feel
it's been so beneficial for my children, helping them feel safe, happy, and nurtured. The staff are fantastic - friendly, warm, and brilliant with the children. My eldest, who has now moved on to primary school, is excelling in phonics and other areas and I put a huge part of that down to the activities and experiences she had here. It really prepared her so well. And I have to mention the food - my children have made it very clear that nursery meals are far superior to my own cooking! All in all, it's just a brilliant nursery, and I feel lucky that both of my children have had the chance to be part of it.
Reply from Taylor Stewart, Nursery Manager at The Old School NurseryThank you for such a lovely review, Susannah. I cannot fault The Old School Nursery, our son has been attending for just over 2 years and loves going to nursery. The staff are all kind and caring, the setting is an ideal size as to be stimulating but not overwhelming and he always eats really well (all delicious home-cooked food). Our younger son
will be starting soon and we have no concerns about the nurturing environment he'll be entering and the care he'll receive. He will likely come on leaps and bounds just as his brother did.

Our son has settled into the Old School Nursery brilliantly. Most importantly, he is happy, but he is also challenged and supported to make progress against the developmental steps. Communication from the nursery is effective, and we love getting regular updates and seeing what he's getting up to- it
helps us talk to him about his play at home. The hygge approach makes the environment inviting and cosy. Outdoor learning is a key part of the children's learning which we love. Parents/carers are warmly welcomed inside at pick up/drop off. We would highly recommend!

Such a beautiful nursery set in a lovely rural location. The staff are amazing and plan new activities for the children daily and the amazing cook prepares the most delicious home-cooked meals which my daughter has enjoyed. She has been going since she was 7 months and has thrived and grown from a crawling
baby to a writing, potty-trained little pre-schooler. She will be starting school this September well-prepared!

I would highly recommend The Old School Nursery - from the moment I arrived for a first viewing, both myself and my son felt so welcome and at home. The staff have been wonderful in helping him to settle in and sending me updates during the day showing him happily involved in the many activities they
offer. I love how much time they spend outdoors, and my son especially loves watching the donkeys over the wall! It has been so lovely to see him flourish over the time he has attended the nursery so far, and I know he will continue to thrive thanks to the care and dedication of the staff and the fantastic environment they have created.

I cannot praise this nursery more highly; my daughter is now in pre-school and after receiving such fantastic care for both of our children over the last 6 years it's going to feel like a loss in our lives when she heads to school in September. The care and attention to the children's development is
superb, as is the communication with the parents and the photos and progress updates on the app brighten up my day. The staff know all the children really well and the small setting allows the children to build fantastic relationships with both staff and children alike. The support we received when toilet training was nothing short of excellent and the preparation for school work currently being conducted is fun, fresh and effective - I am in no doubt that my child will be ready to start school with confidence due to the efforts of this nursery. The outdoor space and connection to the countryside continue to be a real asset. We will really miss being part of The Old School family!

Feel very lucky that I found The Old School Nursery! The staff are absolutely amazing - they've created such a warm, nurturing environment that feels like a home away from home. I love the regular updates and adorable photos of his day I get sent through on the app. The home-cooked meals are a huge

Current Review Score: 10.0 (9.979)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 10 (9.979) out of 10 for The Old School Nursery is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 20 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.979 for The Old School Nursery is calculated as follows: ( (235 Excellents x 5) + (5 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 240 Ratings = 4.979
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Old School Nursery is based on 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 26 number of registered child places is 5.2, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I have worked at The Old School Nursery since Mel took over in 2022. I love making fresh, healthy, home cooked meals everyday for the children here, and they love the food! I also hold a level3 qualification in early years and enjoy getting to spend time with the children over a hot lunch.
