  • The Old Station Nursery Filkins, Lechlade
Nestled within a charming rural community near Lechlade, The Old Station Nursery Filkins offers exceptional childcare services. Housed in the former village school, the nursery has warm and welcoming rooms designed to support children’s development at every stage. The nursery offers exceptional care, enriched by unique learning opportunities for your child. One such experience is child-friendly cooking classes, helping to equip children with valuable skills and deeper knowledge of the cooking process.

The Old Station Nursery Filkins has recently extended its provision to introduce a brand-new 9-place baby room, providing a cosy and nurturing environment for young learners. From the age of two, children can join the 2–4-year-olds' room, where age-appropriate resources and activities tailored to their interests are provided. As children progress, they move to the Pre-School room, where they can learn and play in a safe and nurturing environment. The team emphasises child-led activities whenever possible while also providing structured sessions to help children develop. Additionally, weekly French lessons and preparation for school are included in the Pre-School curriculum.

Outdoor play and exploration are at the heart of the ethos at the nursery, with weekly Forest School sessions for the children to immerse themselves in the natural world. Each child can explore and engage in a mud kitchen, play in dens, and care for the different animals, such as chickens and guinea pigs.

The qualified and dedicated team is passionate about providing high-quality care for all children at the nursery, which is reflected in the Millie's Mark award, recognising the team’s commitment to paediatric first aid.

My son started Filkins Nursery in September 2020, we were warmly welcomed and have built a good relationship with all staff, particularly his keyworker. The outdoor facilities are fantastic, in particular, the forest school. The staff have dealt with COVID-19 amazingly; they have not been given enough
recognition throughout the pandemic. Thank you!

A fantastic nursery with the most caring staff who are all amazing. Both of my children have attended here and have absolutely loved it. The range of activities, along with the great outside space, gives the children a wide variety of fun learning resources. I cannot recommend it enough.

Filkins nursery is absolutely fantastic. They are a very small setting which I love, all the staff are friendly, warm and welcoming and know the children so well. It's the best feeling knowing my son is excited to go to the nursery and comes out happy, telling me about his day. I cannot fault anything,
I have recommended this setting to a few people know and will continue to do so. I'm so glad both my children were able to come here.

The Old Station Nursery, Filkins is an amazing nursery. My son has been going there for the last year since he turned 2. The location is amazing, in a beautiful and peaceful Cotswold village with loads of green space for walks and woods to explore.
The staff are absolutely brilliant and my son talks
about them all at home all the time. They all take such wonderful care of my son and I’ve never worried about him once whilst he is in their care. I know they are taking such good care of him.
He loves the guinea pigs and chickens the nursery have. The forest school and playground area is a wonderful place for children to play and explore. I’ve been using nurseries for the last 16 years and I can honestly say that hands down this is the best nursery we have ever used. I will be so sad when my son starts school next year.

Filkins is a wonderful village nursery. Our daughter spent 3 exceptionally happy years here and our son is currently enjoying his second year. Nursery manager runs the setting efficiently and ensures excellent communication with parents. Our son's keyworker has developed a wonderful bond with our son,
working closely with us through each and every stage of his development and she really has made sure she knows him as an individual. The staff have the most positive and energetic attitude I have ever encountered within childcare, each and every one of them are warm and nurturing and take real pride in what they do.
We simply couldn't recommend Filkins more highly.

Amazing nursery. Our son was slightly delayed on his speech and his key worker really invested in helping him. He has since gained his speech and now has too many opinions!
We cannot recommend Filkins Nursery highly enough.

This Nursery truly deserves its 'Outstanding' rating. The staff consistently go above and beyond to deliver person-centred, educational care, for my little girl.
My husband and I travel out of our way to enable our little girl to attend this nursery as we wouldn't have her anywhere else. My son (now
in primary school) is an August baby and so the youngest in his class. Filkins more than prepared him for school, he is now exceeding in all areas of the curriculum for the second year running. Both of my children have loved being at this nursery and the huge variety of activities amazes me term after term.
I cannot rate them highly enough.

Our daughter moved to the Old Station Nursery at Filkins from another local nursery. She is behind where she should be for speech and language but the difference in her development since starting at Filkins is unbelievable! Her key carer put a development plan in place shortly after starting and has
worked closely with us ever since to do all that she can to bring her on. They encouraged us to start potty training with our daughter and supported us with this day to day. Our daughter managed to be dry throughout the day within a week with the support from her key carer. The setting, staff, imagination with activities and atmosphere are, in our opinion, miles above what we have experienced elsewhere. My eldest daughter went to Filkins and loved every minute. We moved my second daughter there as soon as she was 2, I just wish she could have moved there sooner! Amazing nursery and staff! Highly recommend.

We couldn't be happier with our daughters care at Filkins. Having previously struggled to thrive at other settings she has grown in confidence and bounds in happily, excited for the day ahead. Our daughter is truly treated as an individual and is able to learn and develop in a safe, fun and nurturing
environment.

I was especially impressed with her 2 year review, it was as if I had written it myself. Her key worker has taken the time to get to know her so well. Attention is given to nurturing the key worker relationship, this is not just a phrase thrown about but has real meaning at Filkins, care is taken to endeavour that each child is met and seen out by their key worker every time (when allowing). The facilities and resources available are varied and used to their upmost, often with great creativity to create excellent games for the children, every day there are exciting, varied and relevant activities available.

Overall we cannot praise the level of care and attention given highly enough.

Between my 2 children, I have worked with 4 nurseries (due to moving with the military) and Filkins is by far my favourite. It's hard to say what makes it stand out head and shoulders above all of the other nurseries as it is just such a warm, friendly and loving place.
My son settled in so smoothly,
loves his days there and has really come on leaps and bounds since he started in September 2018. Every morning, we walk into new activities that are so creative in how the staff have used their imagination and the staff are so good at responding to the children's fancies. For instance, my son chose to wear a spider-man outfit to nursery one day, so they came up with a superhero-themed game for the children to play and they all dressed up. They do so much outdoor play and use the community surroundings for walks. They bring books to life by recreating the books and physically 'walking' the children through the stories. Communication is a real strength of Filkins.

As a family, we have moved around the country quite regularly. We have always chosen outstanding nurseries but this preschool is a cut above the rest. I cannot express what an excellent place this is. Children thrive and learn and develop in the most imaginative ways. Our son has come on leaps and bounds
and always comes away full of excitement from the day's activities.

The most fantastic nursery I have found. Our 4 year old son attends the nursery and it is simply the best nursery my wife and I have found.

Due to work, we have had to move the family regularly and have looked at many nurseries (with our son attending 3 others). As such I can confidently say that

this is the best nursery and would recommend it to anyone. The staff are friendly and very knowledgeable and are fantastic with the children.

Love the nursery and will trust them with all our children.

My son has been at the nursery for five months and has a wonderful bond with the staff, is very happy there and I am particularly impressed with the regular contact we have from the team on his development and the care and education of the children. All staff clearly enjoy and are passionate about their
roles and the children. This gives me great peace of mind when dropping off my son.

Believe the reviews on this site and the outstanding OFSTED rating as Filkins nursery really is a gem. Our daughter has been at the nursery for almost a year and we cannot recommend its caring, nurturing and fun environment highly enough.

Staff go the extra mile in all areas. The time and care put

into making it a fun, stimulating, caring and safe place is obvious. The diverse mix of activities - often tailored to children's individual interests - with weekly themes and special events through the year must take a lot of effort.

The rooms are fresh, fun and cared for. Our daughter loves the playground and the chickens, willow tunnel and mud kitchen in the fab Forest School area.

There seems to be low staff turnover so they build good bonds with the children. Our daughter is shy but feels safe, happy and likes all the staff.

The Tapestry journal is a lovely window into our daughter’s world at nursery and lets staff get to know our family more as we can upload content too.

I can not rate Filkins Nursery highly enough, everything they do is faultless.
They put your child first, before everything else. So if staff have spent time preparing Gingerbread Man resources but the children want to focus on dinosaurs, the focus is dinosaurs! They always go that extra mile so
that your child is happy, safe, cared for, and most importantly is doing the most fun and educational activities. From lentils to pasta, slime to shaving foam, there is always a really stimulating hands-on activity ready for the children to explore as soon as they walk through the door. There’s always something new, even after 5 years!
Staff are so kind and nurturing and are always ready to give your child a cuddle when they need one or read them a story in the quiet corner.
I tell every new family to the area to sign their child up for Filkins as it really is the best nursery around. I drive in the opposite direction to where I work, but I wouldn’t send my daughter anywhere else.

My little girl has attended the Nursery since she was 2 and she has had a loving, caring environment throughout. I have always felt that when leaving her needs will be looked after both an emotional level and for her development. it is her final year before she starts school and we will miss everybody
at the nursery, without exception.

My daughter has been attending Filkins full time since October and I couldn't be happier with the nursery. The staff are fantastic, friendly, and genuinely care about your child, their needs and development. My daughter loves going to nursery and her speech has come on leaps and bounds since starting,
she's gone from saying a few words to talking full sentences. I really like the tapestry system and being kept up to date with all the activities my daughter takes part in. The forest school is a lovely addition to the nursery. All in all, a fantastic nursery with brilliant staff, would highly recommend.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.617)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.617) out of 10 for The Old Station Nursery Filkins is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.917 for The Old Station Nursery Filkins is calculated as follows: ( (78 Excellents x 5) + (5 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 84 Ratings = 4.917
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.7 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Old Station Nursery Filkins is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 30 number of registered child places is 6, which has been reached with 7 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
