This cottage-style nursery was graded by Ofsted as ‘Good in all areas’ in December 2021. Located near Bearsted on the edge of the North Downs; an area of outstanding natural beauty, Pennies Hockers Lane perfectly balances rural surroundings with the convenience of swift access to main routes, such as the M20.

The main features of Hockers Lane include catering for children from three months to five years and four separate rooms, arranged by age, for nursery age children.

The nursery ensure parents have an active involvement in decisions on care for their children. There is an extensive garden with Pennies Pit Stop, sensory snug, book nook large sandpit, play equipment and sheltered areas. While meals are prepared daily by a trained chef and made with fresh ingredients sourced from local suppliers.

Pennies offers an annual social calendar of events for children and parents and has rooms that are designed specifically for babies, toddlers, and pre-school aged children.

Pennies fully-inclusive fees cover all food, drinks, nappies and formula milks for the babies and children in their care.

Pennies Day Nursery is a special place where my nearly one year old is incredibly happy and thriving. My son was born at the start of lockdown and I wanted him to have a chance to socialise with other kids and develop in a new setting. He also has a variety of health issues including a restricted diet
that needs to be managed. Pennies Day Nursery have gone above and beyond to engage with specialists and understand my son's needs. From the girls in the room doing his physio exercises with him to the chef in the kitchen understanding his diet better than me! I’m extremely grateful for their effort to work with us and give my son the very best opportunities to develop and thrive.

We currently have one child at Pennies Day Nursery and one who left in August 2020. They both began their journey in the baby room so will have had the full Pennies Day Nursery experience and what a wonderful time they have had! We cannot praise the nursery and its wonderful staff enough for the amazing
care they have shown both of our children. It's a daunting task as a parent, leaving your child in someone else's care for the first time but the Pennies Day Nursery team managed the transition so sensitively both times. I always felt my children were in the right place. Pennies Day Nursery has a real homely feel. It's not too big but has excellent facilities, including a lovely garden which both our children have enjoyed. The real stars at Pennies Day Nursery are the staff who always go above and beyond to make the children happy. I really feel our children have benefited from going to this nursery and now my eldest is at school, I can see this is the case. I have no hesitation in recommending Pennies Day Nursery to any parent.

Our son thoroughly enjoys his time at Pennies Day Nursery - Hockers Lane, Maidstone. He gets so excited as we pull onto the drive, it really says it all! He has learnt lots of new skills, made friends and most of all he has a blast! The staff are super, we certainly feel our son is in the best hands.

My son has been with Pennies Day Nursery - Hockers Lane, Maidstone from nine months, he’s now two and a half. Regardless of what room he has been in or which member of staff has been his key worker, his experience has been nothing short of fantastic. He is always happy to be dropped off there and always
leaves with a skip in his step and a beaming smile on his face! He is really well looked after, he is very well fed and I’m often jealous of what he eats there. I highly recommend Pennies Hockers Lane. My 5-year-old son attended from the age of 9 months and developed incredibly well. My 1 year old now attends and the smile on his face each day, and lets us all know how much he enjoys it. The staff are very professional and the manager is an exceptional leader
who is very dedicated to her job. It's a great environment for kids during their early years.

I have used Pennies at Hockers Lane for over 8 years now and highly recommend them! My youngest daughter is currently attending the nursery and barely says goodbye to me as she runs in the door each morning. She is so happy and content when I leave her and that in itself speaks volumes of how wonderful
the nursery is. We are updated every day through Tapestry with what she’s been up to and the team are always available should you need to talk to anyone. They feed the children with really lovely, fresh and varied cooked food each day and my daughters have great diets and are willing to try anything which I genuinely believe was instilled in them from a young age at Pennies. There’s nowhere else I’d be happier leaving my children, I just wish they could have sleepovers there! I also just wanted to add that their approach to dealing with COVID-19 has been excellent and I feel my daughter is very safe in their care during this time.

Pennies at Hockers Lane is everything you would want from a nursery. The staff are warm, encouraging, supportive and most of all professional and my son loves his time there. He has been attending the nursery for over 3 years working his way through the different rooms to the Pre School room where he
is now. He has learned and developed so much and it's clear to see the staff all genuinely care about all the children. I am so impressed with how they have adapted this past year and kept things as normal as possible for all children. My son will be so sad to leave next September when he starts school.

Our daughter has special educational needs and Pennies are extremely understanding, helpful and supportive of our daughter and us as a family. Pennies is a great environment for children to spend time indoors as well as outdoors and trips to the park. We feel our daughter is looked after as well here

Pennies Hockers Lane is a fantastic nursery. It has such a ‘homely’ feel to it. All the staff from management, room staff and kitchen staff are all very polite and very professional and care for each child. Our daughter has been attending there for about 2 years and she has learnt and developed so much
during this time. She has made some lovely friends there. We receive great communication about her day via email i.e photos of what she has been up to. Thoroughly recommend Hockers Lane!

My son started at Pennies in August. I originally reserved a place for November but needed a place sooner and on short notice, but Pennies were great and sorted out a place for him and he has settled it very well. My son is in the Lodge, and he loves it. The staff are lovely, and they keep him busy
throughout the day with different activities indoor and out. The variety of food is great too. I’m so glad I have found Pennies. The App they provide gives daily updates and includes photographs of his day which you can download and share too and we like to see what he has been doing. I also like the fact that they help potty train as a first time mum it’s useful to have some support!

My daughter started at Pennies in October (13months) after we moved back from living abroad. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I am thrilled with everything about the nursery, my daughter happily goes in every morning and often talks about her teachers and little friends. I get regular updates on what’s
she's been doing with pictures and videos in which she’s always smiling. I’m also really happy with the development she’s shown since starting, especially eating with a fork/spoon. I also love getting the paintings and other art that she brings home, she loves showing us what she’s done. The staff make my life easier, I don’t want to leave my daughter but I have to for work, and knowing she’s safe and happy is so important. I am truly grateful to them both for the love and care they show her and for being so flexible and reactive to her needs and development. It’s a shame they can’t move classes with her when she moves up!

I would thoroughly recommend Hockers Lane to fellow parents. My son attended a previous setting whereby the feedback and developmental encouragement was lacking. This nursery couldn’t be more to the contrary. The level of feedback, activity and engagement I see daily is superb. My son happily gallops

It is clear that the staff love the children, which is very reassuring.
The team in the kitchen go over and beyond what is expected to provide healthy and nutritious meals for the kids. This is great as it means the kids try new and a variety of foods.

As a first time Mum leaving my baby with strangers was terrifying. Pennies and the key workers in the Butterfly Room have provided so much peace of mind. My 13-month-old loves his days at Pennies. The updates on Pennies has been wonderful and my child has already shown new skills that he has developed
while playing with staff at Pennies. The access to lovely outdoor space was one of the things that made our decision to send our child to Pennies easy. We also love the trips to the local park and structured play.
I feel staff take a genuine interest in my child and care for him as I would. This is reflected in the big smile he gives them when I drop him off.

Our eldest son (who's three and a half years old) has attended Pennies for a couple of days each week since he turned one and we will very happily be sending our youngest there once my wife's maternity leave comes to an end. It's hard to fault the care he's received during his time at Pennies - the
staff have all been wonderful to him, and he's always looked forward to his days there. From day one, he's been appreciated and nurtured as a unique little person, rather than just another child to look after. He's fed well and given a wide range of things to do; the staff have always been very happy to accommodate his interests as they develop, too. They've also given him excellent support in picking up new skills - some have come easier than others and extra care and attention has been there to help him with those skills that haven't come as naturally. Can heartily recommend, it'll be a sad day for us when our boys' time there comes to an end.

Pennies at Hockers Lane is a fantastic nursery. Our son has been at the nursery for three years and our daughter recently started too. The manager and staff are brilliant and there is a real family feel which is great for little ones. We wouldn't hesitate to highly recommend Pennies.

My daughter has just finished her time at Pennies Hockers Lane and we were so sad for her time to end. The staff are all so incredibly caring and always thinking of ways to improve their provision. My daughter only attended one day a week but she would always come home having learnt something new and
be so eager to share it with myself and her dad. Their safeguarding procedures are excellent and always followed and I really appreciated the efficiency of their communication. It is one of the pricier options for childcare but I have to say that they are worth every penny!

There is a lovely village feel at Hockers Lane. Staff are incredibly friendly, caring and helpful. My son was made to feel very welcome and the staff listened to any issues I had and a compromise was reached. Food is varied and activities are different every day.

My little one joined Pennies about a month ago and I was a bit concerned as it had to be done very quickly because his previous childminder closed. Staff at Pennies have been so kind and lovely and straight away he felt like at home.
Since he joined I have seen massive progress on his development,
his speech and confidence have been improved greatly.
They always do different and very fun activities. Definitely recommend it.

If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 55 number of registered child places is 11, which has been reached with 15 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I have worked for Pennies for nearly 18 years, I have worked alongside a great team and successfully progressed from being Head of Unit, Third in Charge, Deputy Manager at Newnham Court to Nursery Manager at Hockers Lane.


I love being apart of such a great team and I share my enthusiasm, with the teams, for arts and crafts, messy play and sensory exploration, promoting great learning opportunities for the children. My work family has extended and the team, children and parents, couldn't have made me feel more welcome.

Hi, my name is Kathryn and I joined Pennies in April 2024. I have worked in Early Years establishments for the past 23 years. Back at the beginning of my career, I gained an NNEB in childcare, working in various day nurseries and school settings, with children aged between 3 months to 5 years. More recently I have achieved a BA Hons (first class) degree in Early childhood studies and spent time teaching children in Preschool settings. Having the opportunity to be part of the Pennies family is wonderful and enables me to continue to fulfil my passion within the Early Years and continue to be part of children’s early childhood journey.

Hi, my name is Sarah-Lou and I started Pennies at Hockers Lane in 2001 as a Level 3 Practitioner. Before joining Pennies I worked for another family run company and during this time I completed a Level 2 and 3 NVQ in Childcare and Education. In 2005, when Newnham Court opened, I decided to take a new post there. During my time at Pennies I have gained experience working with children from 3 months old to 11 years old. I have also had 2 children of my own, Millie and Jake. In 2016 I took on a Development Coordinator role at Pennies which allowed me to work with all 3 nurseries and to support each setting with their CPD. I’ve now come back to Hockers Lane as Deputy manager.
