This cottage-style nursery was graded by Ofsted as ‘Good in all areas’ in December 2021. Located near Bearsted on the edge of the North Downs; an area of outstanding natural beauty, Pennies Hockers Lane perfectly balances rural surroundings with the convenience of swift access to main routes, such as the M20.

The main features of Hockers Lane include catering for children from three months to five years and four separate rooms, arranged by age, for nursery age children.

The nursery ensure parents have an active involvement in decisions on care for their children. There is an extensive garden with Pennies Pit Stop, sensory snug, book nook large sandpit, play equipment and sheltered areas. While meals are prepared daily by a trained chef and made with fresh ingredients sourced from local suppliers.

Pennies offers an annual social calendar of events for children and parents and has rooms that are designed specifically for babies, toddlers, and pre-school aged children.

Pennies fully-inclusive fees cover all food, drinks, nappies and formula milks for the babies and children in their care.

Brilliant nursery.
My little girl can be quite shy and more focused on adult interaction but Pennies have been brilliant for supporting this. Their very focused on how they can maximise the nursery experience specifically for your little one, and I've seen nothing but positive things (especially in
terms of social interactions), since my little girl started a year ago.
We wouldn't attend anywhere different. All the staff are so friendly and brilliant, meals are lovely and varied and activities and outside time is very interactive and encouraged.

Once it was time for my little one to start Nursery, choosing which Nursery she attended was easy!
Having friends and relatives with little ones who attended Pennies (both the Hockers Lane and the Newnham Court sites) I was inundated with positive comments, messages and referrals, all speaking so highly
for Pennies and the lovely staff that work there!
Since my little one joined, she has grown in confidence as the weeks have passed. She now speaks excitedly of her key workers at home and, after a few weeks/months of settling into her new routine, she now goes into Nursery with a smile on her face, which has been a welcome comfort for my partner and me.
We have never doubted the care she's received and feel confident in knowing and trusting that she is well looked after.
We are grateful that she has started her school/learning journey at Pennies and look forward to watching her reach new milestones and gain new achievements.

My grandchild has attended Pennies for almost one year. Although I only collect her on the occasion, I have always been made to feel very welcome in the nursery. My son absolutely loves it here. The team are fantastic, so caring and great at keeping you up to date on how you're children are doing. The activities they do are varied, interesting, and really support my son's development. They look after the nursery beautifully as well - it's very clean and tidy.
They also have a gorgeous garden with lots of different play areas and the children go outside everyday. I'm super happy with the service here and would definitely recommend it.

My 2 year has been at Hockers for 14 months and loves it. She's always telling us about the entertaining things the staff do that make her laugh and fun she's had each day. Her speech improves on a daily basis. All the staff know her name and what she does and doesn't like. The staff are very professional

Our daughter started nursery not long after turning 1, she is now nearly 2.5 and we are still so pleased that we chose Pennies. She seems to really enjoy her time at nursery, and we have witnessed her grow in confidence while being there despite being very shy. All of the staff are friendly and take
the time to learn your child's name etc despite working in different rooms. While our daughter is now moving up to her next room which i'm sure she will equally enjoy, i'd like to give a special mention to the Ladybird Lodge and the lovely girls that work in there. They've created the most cosy room with a really homely feeling - i'd be very happy to spend the day there! Our youngest will be starting in a few months time and we're sure that she will also be very happy at Hockers Lane.

The team at Hockers are amazing, everyone knows my son and has time for him. Even people from rooms he hasn't been to. The food is great and everything feels very clean. One member of staff in particular makes every day a joy for my son. We are sending our second child here later this year.

My Daughter has been at this nursery since September 2024. She was at another nursery 9 months before that and the difference is amazing. Within two weeks we noticed her speech coming along much quicker. Her confidence has grown so quickly, the staff are lovely any requests I have asked them to follow

Our daughter started with Pennies in September this year and we were nervous about trusting others to look after her (possibly a feeling other first-time parents may have). The staff at Pennies made the transition so easy and she absolutely loves going now, with big smiles when she sees us pull up outside
nursery. We receive a daily report after each session and a report at the end of the week with lots of photos of her time at nursery. We are so thankful for Pennies and particularly two members of staff who are amazing and so creative in all the activities they put on for the children. Our daughter has learned so many new skills since she started at nursery and really benefited from spending time with the other children in her group.

Our daughter attends Pennies Hockers Lane 3 days a week. The staff have been welcoming and helped my daughter settle into the nursery extremely well. She was a little apprehensive at first but now goes into nursery with a big smile on her face. We always receive lovely photos and updates on her learning
and development and we have noticed how her social development has come on leaps and bounds since attending Pennies. We are very pleased with the care our daughter receives and can not fault the nursery.

My daughter joined Pennies in January at six months old. To say I was anxious to leave my baby so young is an understatement. However my fears were quickly put to rest after meeting the lovely two particular members of staff, the care and attention to detail they put in is outstanding. My little girl
would put her arms out to go to them in the morning, I could walk away and go to work knowing that she was with her Pennies family. They threw her a birthday party when she turned one and praised all her milestones along with me and my husband. Them early days were made achievable because of their care. Once she turned 15 months she moved up to Busy Bees and we did have a slight wobble with transitions, however, another member of staff worked hard to help settle her in and now she goes happily to nursery once again.
The vibe is warm and caring in Hockers Lane, I see continuous change and progression in the rooms to make sure that the children all have the best days there, which really and truly is all we want as parents.

I can’t thank the butterflies room, ladies, enough for how amazing they have been with my son’s transition to nursery life. I was a very anxious mother and found it challenging to let my son go. My little girl has been going to Pennies Day Nursery - Hockers Lane, Maidstone since 2020, she's really grown and learnt so much whilst she's been there. My son and daughter have both attended Pennies Day Nursery, we've been using them for years. I cannot fault the care, love and learnings provided by the Pennies staff. The nursery is a lovely environment and the children love it there. So much attention goes into getting them ready for school and the

I have worked for Pennies for nearly 18 years, I have worked alongside a great team and successfully progressed from being Head of Unit, Third in Charge, Deputy Manager at Newnham Court to Nursery Manager at Hockers Lane.


I love being apart of such a great team and I share my enthusiasm, with the teams, for arts and crafts, messy play and sensory exploration, promoting great learning opportunities for the children. My work family has extended and the team, children and parents, couldn't have made me feel more welcome.

Hi, my name is Kathryn and I joined Pennies in April 2024. I have worked in Early Years establishments for the past 23 years. Back at the beginning of my career, I gained an NNEB in childcare, working in various day nurseries and school settings, with children aged between 3 months to 5 years. More recently I have achieved a BA Hons (first class) degree in Early childhood studies and spent time teaching children in Preschool settings. Having the opportunity to be part of the Pennies family is wonderful and enables me to continue to fulfil my passion within the Early Years and continue to be part of children’s early childhood journey.

Hi, my name is Sarah-Lou and I started Pennies at Hockers Lane in 2001 as a Level 3 Practitioner. Before joining Pennies I worked for another family run company and during this time I completed a Level 2 and 3 NVQ in Childcare and Education. In 2005, when Newnham Court opened, I decided to take a new post there. During my time at Pennies I have gained experience working with children from 3 months old to 11 years old. I have also had 2 children of my own, Millie and Jake. In 2016 I took on a Development Coordinator role at Pennies which allowed me to work with all 3 nurseries and to support each setting with their CPD. I’ve now come back to Hockers Lane as Deputy manager.
