Jesters' beautiful, purpose-built, cedar wood Nursery and dedicated Baby Cottage specialise in nurturing under 3s with babies and children spending their formative years focusing on care, wellbeing and learning through play. The semi-rural, intimate setting overlooks the Essex countryside; and with nature on the doorstep, offers a truly 'home away from home' feel.

Jesters Bicknacre Nursery is part of the fully integrated co-location Nursery and Nursery School set up. Once children reach pre-school age, they transfer to the exclusive Nursery School located just 5 minutes up the road in the neighbouring village of Danbury. Jesters Danbury is the 'Home of School Readiness' and capitalises on and dedicates itself to preparing pre-schoolers for the transition to primary education, operating as a distinct and exceptional satellite Nursery School.

Once children graduate to primary School, the Jesters care does not end. Back at Bicknacre, the separate Jesters ‘Kids Club’ provides breakfast, after school and holiday care for children up to 12 years of age.

My wife and I couldn’t be happier with Jesters. It’s a lovely small nursery with small numbers of children, and the outdoor space is wonderful. We actually drive quite a distance for our son to attend Jesters. We’ve been able to have conversations with staff around our son’s learning plan, and he has
a lovely relationship with not only his key worker but the other staff too. He always comes home telling us about what he did and showing us the yoga moves he has learned. The menus there seem to be really nutritious and so varied. Our son has been at Jesters since the end of 2020, and all through Covid restrictions and requirements, I feel it was managed really well.

Our daughter is very happy at Jesters. She has been going since she was a baby and is going to school next term. Our other baby is going there too into the new baby room. The staff are fantastic, and we have never had any problems which makes us feel safe that our child is very well cared for and learning
lots of new things every day. The nursery buildings are lovely, and it's just like a children's village as all the buildings are around big central gardens next to fields, so they get to play out in the fresh air every day in a safe and natural environment.
Reply from Becky Tutte, Bicknacre Nursery Operations Manager at Jesters Day Nursery & Pre-School BicknacreThank you for your wonderful feedback. It has been lovely having your daughter here, and we can't wait to welcome your son to the Jesters Family.

Unfortunately, I have just removed both of my children from Jesters. Their standards have fallen below what I deem acceptable, especially in relation to the fees being charged. There have been several staffing changes which have meant that at one point my daughter had 5 different 'key workers' in just
5 months. Since we joined in August 2020, only 3 staff members remain. Moreover, I do not feel the staff considered my son's needs when changing his key worker just 3 months before he is due to start school. The teachers work hard and we have been appreciative of their individual efforts. There is a good variety of food offered but this has been inconsistent over time. The car park is a nightmare at drop-off and pick-up times. My experience with the management (both senior and at the setting level) has been poor. I tried to stick with the nursery as long as I could because the idea of changing was overwhelming but I wish we had left months ago. There is much better out there.
Reply from Madeline, Director for Compliance and Communications at Jesters Day Nursery & Pre-School BicknacreHaving considered the review after previously discussing the points personally with M. B, we would like to respond as they are in the public arena. Jesters Bicknacre is a small setting which for most families is a big plus. Staff know all the children, not just the ones they are looking after. However, we do not have a large staff so when people move or go on maternity leave it has an impact. We have, like others inherited post covid conditions affecting staff. We consider every child's needs when planning services but we have a duty of care to all of our children and striking a balance may mean that individual requirements cannot always be met despite our best efforts. We are sorry that M B feels her experience with managers was poor despite listening to her concerns and explaining our rationale. The car parking is beyond our control. We understand that there may be better out there for some individuals but this does not reflect the view of the vast majority of our parents.

Our daughter has been attending Jesters Day Nursery since November 2021, and we couldn't be happier with our decision. I was really apprehensive initially, but our daughter has settled in so well and enjoys her time there. She is always happy at drop off and collections and loves her nursery teacher.
The baby nook is a fantastic space, and they have a wonderful outdoor area. All the staff are so kind and caring, which makes it that little bit easier knowing they are so well looked after. Our daughter's confidence has come on leaps and bounds since starting, which is amazing to see. We couldn't recommend Jesters more!

My son moved midterm from another preschool to Jesters just over a month ago. It was a daunting time for us both, I didn’t know if I was doing the right thing moving him, but I didn’t have a lot of choice due to work. He was quite upset to start with, and I was worried he wouldn’t settle. How wrong
was I! After the first week, he loves it! He comes home and tells me he loves pre-school, he loves the ladies and his little friends. He has a great time, he comes back full of stories, and I enjoy catching up on his day via the app. I’d heard good things locally about Jesters, and it's 100% worth the money - if you considering Jesters for your child’s daycare, my advice is to go for it. They’re wonderful.

Our daughter joined Jesters Pre-School in September 2021. We're extremely happy with her progress and can't recommend them enough. The staff are all really friendly, go out of their way to support families and are brilliant with the children. They take part in loads of different activities each day,
like art and crafts and fun educational games - the list is endless. The fantastic outdoor space was also a big positive for us because our little girl loves being outdoors. She always comes out with a big smile on her face, which is lovely to see. I also like the fact that they can get my little girl to try different foods as she can be fussy. Highly recommend!
Thank you!

I currently have two children in Jesters and can't recommend it enough. Both love their time there and their staff in their respective rooms. I have always felt very informed about how they are getting on through their app updates and termly progress reports and parents evenings, as well as the updates
when I collect. I chose Jesters because it was small, and the outdoors was a big part of their philosophy. The kids are always getting fully involved in all the activities they have and come back telling all about their days and what they've done (well one of them does). I love all the theme days throughout the year and have never worried about leaving them; they both waltz in confidence as ever after settling showing how comfortable they feel.

My daughter started nursery at Jesters in Bicknacre about 7 weeks ago. I was worried about sending my child to nursery because I felt guilty that she wasn’t at home with me, however, taking this step has been one of my best decisions. Firstly the nursery is excellent because there is a lot of outdoor
space which is used as often as possible. I didn’t want my daughter being stuck inside all day so this was a real win for me when I viewed the nursery. The ladies who work in this nursery are amazing. They were sympathetic to me when I felt sad leaving my daughter, giving me updates through the day on how she was doing and overall caring people, exactly the kind you want to leave your child with. I now drop my daughter off and she happily leaves me and enjoys her day. The improvement in everything she does is astounding. It’s so reassuring to know my child is safe and happy and loves her days at nursery. I would recommend this nursery to any of my friends/family. Thank you so much Jesters.

When we first viewed Jesters Nursery Childcare @ Bicknacre we knew instantly that we wanted our daughter to attend there. It felt like home from home. Our daughter was born during the pandemic and so had very little interaction with other adults and children however she has settled in so quickly and
made some positive relationships with the staff and children. She has grown in confidence since being there and we are really pleased with the progress she's making. The nursery is located in a lovely setting and the staff are all so helpful, professional and personable.

We are thrilled with Jesters Nursery Childcare @ Bicknacre. The staff have made our family feel so welcome. The level of communication has been great, always making us feel informed about everything going on at the nursery as well as what our children are up to. Our children have already built a strong
attachment to their key worker and have made friends with the other children in their group. They come home having learnt new things every day. I love how much time they spend outdoors and all of the fun activities they get to do!

Jesters Nursery Childcare @ Bicknacre is a wonderful nursery for children, I could not recommend them enough to other parents who are looking for nurseries for their children. Jesters Nursery Childcare @ Bicknacre was recommended to me by a friend and I am so glad they were because I couldn't be happier!
The staff are warm, inviting and make you feel at ease when leaving your child or children with them for the day. I remember being shown around by the managing director and she said 'This nursery is her third baby and it's not just a business to her' which is something as a parent, you want to hear and hearing this made me feel even more confident with leaving my child in their care. Jesters Nursery Childcare @ Bicknacre felt like home away from away for me and my baby absolutely loves going there three days a week.

I am beyond happy with the care and support that has been provided for my daughter since she has been coming to the nursery. The staff are amazing and work really well with my daughter. They have helped her development both in education and skills based. They take great care of her every day that she
is in. I felt really anxious about her starting nursery at first. I am now so pleased with this nursery for my daughter, as I just cannot fault it. The staff have all worked to hard to keep it safe and clean for my daughter to continue to come throughout the lockdown. I feel at complete ease with her attending, even during these times. I must say, I will be pretty emotional when my daughter has to leave to go to school as their care and attention is amazing.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.691)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.691) out of 10 for Jesters Day Nursery & Pre-School Bicknacre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 15 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.816 for Jesters Day Nursery & Pre-School Bicknacre is calculated as follows: ( (146 Excellents x 5) + (33 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 179 Ratings = 4.816
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.875 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Jesters Day Nursery & Pre-School Bicknacre is based on 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.875
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 30 number of registered child places is 6, which has been reached with 15 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Working across both sites is such an incredible role. I love that the children’s personalities are really starting to show, especially the cheeky side! Most of my professional career has been at Jesters, and I love their values and ethos throughout the settings.

Outside Work
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my partner and my little boy, Dougie. We love to go for walks to the park and explore the wonderful places around us.

Favourite children’s book
Growing up, my favourite book was The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton. It reminds me of the time I would read it at my Grandma’s house and we talk about which ‘lands’ we wanted to go to. Mine would always be ‘The Land of Dreams!’

Background
Hello, I’m Rachel, Head of Education & Wellbeing at Jesters. I have over 12 years of experience in childcare and education, and have taught in both nursery and school settings. I am passionate about child development and will always go above and beyond to ensure that all children are provided with exceptional learning and care opportunities.

The Jesters Family
I am part of the leadership teams at all Jesters settings. My role is to shape education and the curriculum across the service. I have Early Years Professional status.

Outside work
In my spare time I enjoy watching a good documentary or my favourite football team. I love reading, gardening and being outdoors.

Favourite children’s book
My favourite book is The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark by Jill Tomlinson, as it reminds me of my childhood. My Grandparents used to read it to me to help me get over my fear. Happily, ‘Plop’ got over his fear, however I did not!

Background
Hello, I am the Head of Curriculum & Inclusion, developing and nurturing our Jesters pre-schoolers. I have always had an immense passion for helping others and making a difference, and because of this, I always knew I wanted to work with children, positively impacting their lives and helping them thrive and learn.

The Jesters Family
Growing up, I always admired my teachers and couldn’t wait until I could inspire other young children, too. I completed my University Degree in Early Years and Primary Education and QTS Qualifications, and have been working in childcare and education since 2014. I have loved every minute and continue to do so here at Jesters.

Outside work
In my spare time, I enjoy walking and cuddling my two dogs, Ralph and Willow; they are adorable and playful. I also enjoy spending time with my family, watching movies and cooking each other’s dinners.

Favourite children’s book
My favourite children’s book is Superworm by Julia Donaldson. This book has been extremely lucky for me, as I based an activity and lesson around it, and thankfully, I was successful. It is also an excellent read for children and my go-to in the classroom. I know firsthand the children enjoy it as much as I enjoy reading it to them.

Job Title: Deputy Nursery Manager Joined: 2025

Background
My first career was Nursing, specialising in Cardiothoracic Surgical Nursing. After I had my first daughter, I decided to leave Nursing. I ‘fell’ into teaching whilst volunteering at my daughter’s school and absolutely loved it! I gained QTS in 2011 and have worked in London schools up until last year, when I made the life-changing decision to move out of London. I am a passionate Early Years advocate and have predominantly taught Nursery and Reception Classes.

The Jesters Family
My role is Deputy Manager alongside Rhian. The ethos and curriculum at Jesters are inspiring, creative and most importantly caring. I love coming to work and seeing the children thrive. Jesters is a community that has children at its very heart, and I feel it is a privilege to help every child to be happy, healthy and develop a love of learning.

Outside work
I enjoy spending as much time as I can with my two grown-up daughters and my cat. My main passion is cooking. This is my go-to relaxation technique.

Favourite children’s book
My favourite book is That Rabbit Belongs to Emily Brown by Cressida Cowell. I love that it emphasises the power of imagination alongside the ‘magic’ bond we have with a special toy.
