Little Green Rascals Organic Day Nursery - Bishopthorpe

Old School House, York YO23 2RE

Little Green Rascals opened its doors in March 2017 in the lovely village of Bishopthorpe.

The new setting offers both nursery care for children aged 2 – 5 years and wraparound care both before and after school which includes freshly-prepared organic meals and snacks, all cooked on site.

A holiday play scheme is available for all children aged 5 - 14 years and can be booked on an ad hoc basis for each school holiday subject to availability.

The setting boasts three beautiful rooms which are named as The Hive, The Oak Room and the Green Room, offering a family group style for the key person system with mixed aged rooms, which is unique from all other LGR settings.

It is based within the old school building opposite the library and drop off and collect from Bishopthorpe Infants School and Archbishop of York CE Junior School. However in the holidays, they are happy to provide care for children from any school on an ad hoc basis subject to availability.

The nursery provides an enabling environment both indoors and outdoors with a range of super-exciting activities supporting learning and development for each child as an individual.

It offers a range of optional extra-curricular activities such as Forest School, science classes, yoga, drama, French, Spanish lessons, ballet and lots of other sporty classes.

The idea behind these extra classes is to give parents ‘family time’ at the weekends, so they offer many hobbies during nursery hours. Staff involve children in the decision-making process and support the planning of activities choosing particular topics of focus.

The setting is quite unique with restored original features such as beautiful high ceilings and panelling. It is all presented in its own individual Little Green Rascals way, bringing the ‘outdoors indoors’.

The manager would encourage you to go and have a look around with no obligation to book and meet the lovely team.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Day Nursery / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Day Nursery receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.75 for Little Green Rascals Organic Day Nursery - Bishopthorpe is calculated as follows: ( (36 Excellents x 5) + (12 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 48 Ratings = 4.75

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Day Nursery to friends and family?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.356 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Little Green Rascals Organic Day Nursery - Bishopthorpe is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 3.75

    2. Target of 6.6 positive Reviews (33 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 4 Reviews ÷ 6.6 Target = 0.606

I can't praise the nursery and staff enough.
My husband and I are so happy to have found such a lovely, warm and welcoming environment for my daughter to spend her time while we work. The little touches for parents mean a lot and show they understand how hard it can be balancing work and childcare. She is clearly very happy and enjoys her time as a rascal.

I was concerned that the nursery would be too small for my daughter and that the outside space was much smaller than on her previous nursery site (also Little Green Rascals). Actually, my daughter loves the nursery. The rooms have the same warm feeling as previous sites and I love the managed approach to risk in having a wood burning stove in two of the rooms. The staff are warm and welcoming and seem to genuinely enjoy being around the kids and are very engaged in playing with them.

The use of Famly app is great for keeping me in touch with what my daughter is doing and helps me link to things she talks about or shows an interest in. I love the creative play-based approach to learning and that possibly due to the more intimate size, sometimes the play activities are very much focused on where her current learning interests lie.

The effort that the nursery puts into celebrating events like Christmas is magical and is a very special touch.

My son has been to previous nurseries in the past but none of them compare to Little Green Rascals. The staff go above and beyond for every child in their care. I feel like they really care about every child’s development in their care. I would recommend Little Green Rascals to anyone.

Description:

I originally started working in Marketing for a number of the UK’s blue chip organisations, with my final employed role as the Head of European Marketing for American Express in London.

After the birth of my second child, after experiencing the benefits of alternative medicine, I decided to train as a Homeopath, I became fully qualified in 2006.

Following a number of failed attempts to find suitable nursery provision for my children I decided to open up my own Nursery in 2009. The Nursery runs with a wholly ethical philosophy, we respect our environment and strive to do everything in our powers to ensure that not only do we operate with as little impact on the environment as possible but our children also understand and act under this mantra. We use essential oils, have a kitchen garden and use only natural cleaning products. We do not compromise – the children are our totally focus.

We now have two nurseries, with over 400 families and look after up to over 200 children each day. Within six years of opening we now employ over 100 staff and source all our products and services within 10 miles of York.

My passion is nursery care and food and I hope to encourage other providers with research and example.

I was lucky enough to win the North of England’s Business Accelerator Award in 2012. The nursery is an Investor in People and we hold one of only three Gold Awards in the UK from the Soil Association for our Catering.

I currently sit on the Soil Association’s Committee and I am the Deputy Chair for the National Day Nurseries Association in York.
