Chiltern Hills Montessori has three sites - one for babies, one for toddlers and one for pre-school aged children.
All sites are very short walks from each other in the small, picturesque village of Downley, a Chiltern Hills area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Downley Common, where the children regularly play and walk, is also designated as a Conservation Area meaning all three sites are surrounded by historic buildings and lovely, green spaces and woods to explore. Wildlife forms a fascinating part of Downley's natural environment with children regularly encountering pheasants, partridges, red kites and muntjac deer, to name just a few.
The Toddler site and Pre-School have been graded as outstanding by Ofsted (January 2024) and the Baby room achieved a good grading at their very first inspection. All teams are incredibly proud of these grades.
The nursery takes children from three months old up to reception school entry. Babies aged from 3 months to 2 years attend the Moor Lane setting, 2 to 3 year old toddlers are located at the High Street POD setting and pre-school children, aged 3-4, attend nursery on the Downley Primary School site, known locally as TDS.
The pre-school site offers a Forest School for the older children to help develop a lifelong love and understanding of the natural environment, whilst developing self-esteem, confidence and social skills.
All staff are highly trained and enhanced DBS checked.
The nursery is open Monday to Friday, 51 weeks a year, closing for one week at Christmas, on bank holidays and for Inset training days.
Chiltern Hills Montessori nursery has 3 buildings in the Downley village. Please contact the team to arrange a visit.

About this price
How funding is applied, how the monthly figure is calculated.More info
Working parents of children aged 9 months to 2 years can usually claim up to 30 funded hours a week. The working-parent hours depend on each parent meeting the minimum earnings rules and earning under £100,000 a year. This nursery stretches funded hours across 49 weeks of the year. You've selected 30 funded hours.
This nursery applies up to 10 funded hours per day, stretched across 49 weeks of the year. With your selected funding, 23.3 hours are covered each week. Hours beyond this, including the early and late parts of the day, are charged at the standard rate.
We work out the total cost across the year and divide by 12, so the figure shown is a smoothed monthly average. In practice, nurseries bill in different ways. Some bill monthly at this average. Others bill weekly, or charge for what happened that week or month, which can vary across the year. Confirm billing details with the nursery when you enquire.

Today was my daughter's last day at nursery before moving to the next stage, and we couldn't be more grateful for the wonderful care she has received over the past year. From her settling-in sessions to her well-planned transition visits to the next site, every step has been thoughtfully organised to help her feel happy, confident and secure.
The staff have taken the time to truly get to know my daughter, understanding her needs, strengths and interests, and supporting her development every step of the way. Communication is excellent, with daily diaries, end-of-day handovers and parents' evenings providing valuable insights into her learning and progress.
What stands out most is how much the staff genuinely care about the children and their families. Their kindness, warmth and dedication shine through in everything they do. We have built such lovely relationships with the team and will miss them greatly. Thank you for giving our daughter such a positive, nurturing and memorable start

Thank you so much Josie for your kind review. We have absolutely adored having such a fantastic little girl in our care and seeing her blossom and gain in confidence. She will be very happy at our toddler nursery with her little pals and continue to go from strength to strength.

Both of my children have had the happiest times here and I feel 100% confident leaving them here whilst I work. They go on walks around the village and common and the woods regularly and have even taken a trip to the supermarket on the bus which my son loved!
It will be an emotional day when my son eventually leaves for school.

My son has formed such lovely bonds with them, and they have helped us, as parents, a lot. From toilet training to learning letters, table manners or emotional regulation...I cannot thank them enough! He's made many friends there and has started enjoying new foods. Also...my child would always come home absolutely knackered, their days were always full of fun things to do and learn:)

He has grown in confidence and has developed so much socially and academically, and is now ready to start school. The staff is what sets this nursery apart. This is an amazing nursery that has been perfect for our son. We were looking to move him from a different nursery for his preschool year so visited lots and almost gave up then we came across Chiltern Hills and knew instantly it was the one. It is a 15-minute drive from home and so worth it. The staff are all incredible, most of them have been there for years and years and care very deeply about the children. They do such a range of activities as well as a gentle introduction to phonics etc. It is all well-planned and purposeful which differs greatly from our experience elsewhere. Our son has developed so much thanks to this nursery. It seems very rare to find a high-quality preschool that does 8 AM - 6 PM all year round but this is it!
