Tops Day Nurseries launches UK-first accredited Baby Specialist programme

Tops Day Nurseries has launched a new accredited Baby Specialist programme, setting a new benchmark for baby care across its nurseries and giving parents added confidence when choosing care for children under two.

Designed to strengthen emotional security and expert developmental support for babies, the accreditation ensures that every Tops Day Nursery will have dedicated Baby Specialists trained in infant development, attachment, and wellbeing. These practitioners will champion best practice in baby rooms, support colleagues, and act as a key point of contact for parents seeking reassurance and guidance during their child’s earliest years.

The first two years of life are widely recognised as a critical window for cognitive, emotional and physical development, with the quality of early care having a lasting impact on children’s wellbeing and learning outcomes. The new Baby Specialist accreditation aims to raise standards across the sector by combining evidence informed practice with Tops’ well-established focus on nurturing, responsive care and sustainable, child-centred environments.

Sophie Johnson, Quality and Audit Director for Tops Day Nurseries, said: “The first year of life is the most important period for brain development, with babies having unique developmental, emotional and neurological needs that require specialist knowledge. That's why we're proud to offer accredited Baby Specialist training throughout our nurseries, deepening understanding of attachment, strengthening knowledge of the first 1,000 days, building confidence in responsive care, and rooting practice in current research”.

By introducing accredited Baby Specialists across its nurseries, Tops Day Nurseries is positioning itself as the first large nursery group in the UK to offer expert-led baby care as standard, directly addressing one of parents’ biggest concerns, how to ensure their baby receives highly skilled, attentive and consistent care every day.

The initiative also reflects growing demand from parents for greater transparency and professionalism in early years provision, as well as alignment with their values on wellbeing and sustainability. The Baby Specialist role will complement Tops’ wider commitment to “Growing minds for a greener future,” strengthening emotional connections with families while supporting the next generation to thrive from their very first months.
