There were learning opportunities at every turn for children at Hampstead Gate Day Nursery in Milton Keynes as they took part in an array of immersive activities to mark Earth Day.

From creating their own representations of Earth using sustainable materials and discussing why recycling is important, to planting seasonal vegetables and herbs in their allotment area, pre-schoolers from the setting on Eelbrook Avenue were delighted to embrace all the occasion had to offer and learn about how small actions can make a big difference.

As part of the festivities, children took to the eco-garden to learn more about the life cycles of frogs, where they observed frogspawn in the pond and discussed the different stages of development. To deepen their understanding of nature and caring for wildlife habitats, the group then designed and created their own ponds on a smaller scale.

To round off the experience, pre-schoolers helped to create signs and posters for an eco-friendly march outside the nursery building, proudly promoting messages including ‘keep our oceans clean, look after our animals’ and ‘save the planet, look after our world’.

It is for such initiatives that Hampstead Gate have earnt a prestigious ‘Green Flag’ award from Eco-Schools for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices.

Hampstead Gate Deputy Manager, Ashleigh Smith explained;

“Earth Day was a huge success and gave our children so many exciting opportunities to learn about the world around them. Through hands-on projects, they developed an excellent grasp of how everyday actions can have a positive influence. We are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm and the thoughtful conversations they have had about making a difference.”
