There were learning opportunities at every turn for children at Windmill Hill Day Nursery in Swindon as they learnt about life cycles first-hand with the help of some special additions.

At the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on Whitehill Way, children of all ages were delighted to follow the journey from start to finish as they closely monitored living eggs in an incubator, before watching them hatch into fluffy chicks, learning all about the process through observations and caring for the creatures in their early stages of life.

During the unique experience, the chicks were incorporated into a broad range of learning areas to help children build on STEM knowledge, as well as promoting caring and nurturing skills and personal responsibility by carrying out duties such as replenishing food and water.

Windmill Hill Day Nursery Manager, Kayleigh Blaylock explained;

“This experience has not only been incredibly enriching for the children’s learning and development, but it’s also helped to strengthen our parent partnerships, with adults just as engaged and excited to see their children learning in such a hands-on way. By connecting with real-life experiences like this, we’re also helping to build the children’s cultural capital – giving them a deeper understanding of the world and creating lasting memories.”
