There were endless learning opportunities for children at Crescent Day Nursery in Birmingham as they embarked on a special trip to learn more about their favourite animals.

After being asked by practitioners where they would like to go on their next trip, children from the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on Calthorpe Road were delighted to take the bus to Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park, where they saw an array of creatures, with highlights for the group including otters, red pandas, bush dogs, meerkats and snakes.

As part of the experience, pre-schoolers were thrilled to bring along their very own mascot, Harry the Hippo, whilst navigating the park and finding and identifying the different animals, before stopping for a picnic lunch and discussing the exciting facts they had learnt on their adventure, as well as the ways in which they could help protect endangered species.

It is for such activities that Crescent have been awarded a prestigious ‘Green Flag with Distinction’, the highest accolade in the internationally recognised Eco-Schools programme, which is awarded for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices, including a ‘green’ curriculum of topics including biodiversity and marine life.

Crescent Day Nursery Manager, Laura Whittingham explained; “Our pre-schoolers have been focusing on animals as their learning inspiration recently, so they jumped at the opportunity to visit the Conservation Park when we were planning our latest outing.

"For some of the group, this was their first time going on the bus, so there were new experiences all round, and lots of excitement when visiting the reptile house. We believe that instilling a love and respect for nature at a young age is crucial in nurturing environmentally conscious individuals who will make a positive impact on our planet.”
