There were learning opportunities at every turn for children at Nature Trails Day Nursery in Cawston as they received a gardening masterclass from a very special guest visitor.
At the award-winning setting on Coventry Road, pre-schoolers were delighted to plant a variety of seeds with the help of nursery grandparent, Karen, who shared her wisdom and showed the captivated group how to give their plants the best possible start.
After using their communication and language skills to discuss the shape and colour of the different seeds, children explored a variety of planting methods, including in individual pots, in flower beds and in grow bags, each having a chance to dig their own holes and sow seeds, as well as watering them and the other plants around the garden.
It is for such activities that Nature Trails have earnt a prestigious ‘Green Flag with Distinction’, the highest accolade in the international Eco-Schools scheme, which is awarded for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices, with year-round initiatives including creating habitats for wildlife and crafting with natural materials.
Nature Trails Deputy Manager, Kelly Lawson explained;
“At Nature Trails we believe in the importance of intergenerational learning and community involvement. It was heart warming to see how excited the children were to take part in this experience and it’s lovely for our families to participate in enriching the lives of our children and sharing their knowledge and skills. We will continue to host these exciting gardening sessions, with many of our grandparents already volunteering to come in to help our little ones learn more about the environment.”
