Parents breathed a sigh of relief knowing they’d got through possible tantrums and tears as their child’s costume cut the mustard on World Book Day.

Based on Judith Kerr’s children’s book ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’, a little boy arrived at 22 Street Lane Nursery in Leeds wearing a stripy tiger suit.

He was accompanied by a child dressed as 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar', based on Eric Carle’s picture book character.

22 Street Lane Nursery tweeted (@22StreetLane) ‘The children have loved coming to nursery as characters from their favourite books for #WorldBookDay.

‘We spent lots of time reading through their most treasured stories and we loved looking through all the illustrations together.’

World Book Day was created by UNESCO on 23 April 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. It is marked in over 100 countries around the world. The first World Book Day in the UK and Ireland took place 25 years ago.

While still encouraging children to bring in their favourite book, Ninelands Primary School in Leeds decided to give parents a break by boldly announcing they could ditch children’s costumes this year.

Ninelands Primary School tweeted: “No extra work by parents making costumes, children selecting their favourite book and taking it into school to read

“For the nursery level the teacher read their favourite story to them, lovely to hear how successful it was for them”.

Many children arrived at nursery wearing capes to mimic their favourite comic superheroes and early years staff at Bonny Downs Nursery in London delighted children by transforming themselves into Catwoman, Batman and Wonder Woman.

A red and white-striped work colleague, however, may have beaten them to the prize of best dressed adult, when she arrived looking like the ‘Where’s Wally?’ character.

The nursery tweeted (@CPS Nursery): “Hopefully the aliens have gone now and the nursery team will be back this morning!

'We had a great World Book Day and did lots of activities based on our book 'The aliens are coming!'
