Over 11,500 children from 136 Busy Bees Nurseries Ltd nurseries raised the money for The Dame Kelly Holmes (DKH) Legacy Trust in 136 days.
The charity aims to give disadvantaged children the chance to realise their dreams through the inspirational guidance of Paralympic, Olympic, World and Commonwealth champions.
Dame Kelly Holmes kindly invited key members of Busy Bees staff, parents and children to Grovesnor House to thank them personally and congratulate them on their commitment on their fundraising initiative.
Ms Holmes said: “I can’t thank Busy Bees enough for all their support and commitment to my charity. To raise over £53,000 is an unbelievable achievement, and it will make such a difference to our work supporting more young people.
“It’s been great to see the Busy Bees children complete so many Golden Miles. I had a great time when I visited the Sudbury Hill Nursery, and the commitment everyone has shown to completing their Golden Miles has been fantastic!”
The DKH Legacy Trust also sent along some very special guests who have supported Busy Bees along the way. These included national Olympic hero and this year’s Deputy Mayor of the Olympic Village, Duncan Goodhew, Paralympic 1500m and 800m Tim Prendergast, and Commonwealth Taekwondo Junior Champion, Romaine Bailey.

Marg Randles, Busy Bees managing director said: “We are delighted that Dame Kelly Holmes was able to join us in recognising and celebrating the hard work of our children, their parents and staff raising money for the DKH Legacy Trust.
“Parents and children travelled from all corners of the country to join us, which reflects their commitment to supporting this worthy cause. Busy Bees support children to follow their interest and passion and the DKH Legacy Trust has the same ambition so it seemed fitting to engage, particularly in the year of the Olympics.
“We have had a great time walking, cycling and running the golden mile and hope that our efforts will go some way to help others to follow their dreams”.
Busy Bees have lived up to their name this year by combining a commemorative Olympic theme with a physical activity programme called the Golden Mile.
The nursery children walked over 20,000 miles between them to promote healthy living and raise awareness of their fund-raising initiative.
