Job Summary

We are seeking a compassionate, proactive, and skilled 1:1 Support Worker to work with a young child with complex needs including Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, global developmental delay, significant speech and language difficulties (including apraxia), and physical disabilities. The successful candidate will support this child across all aspects of their development, with a strong focus on communication, physical access, emotional regulation, and learning engagement. This is an ideal position for someone who has a keen interest in SEND, as it provides a unique opportunity to work alongside a multidisciplinary team including Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Local Authority SEND team and Early Years Educators in bringing the best outcomes for a young child with complex needs within a mainstream setting.

Key Responsibilities:

Communication and Interaction

Support the child in using a total communication approach, including:

·  High and low tech AAC

·  Gestures, facial expressions, and objects of reference

·  Model language and reinforce communication attempts throughout the day

·  Follow strategies outlined by the Speech and Language Therapist

·  Support consistent use of a communication book and/or visual timetable

Cognition and Learning

·  Implement a highly structured, personalised curriculum

·  Provide differentiated resources and concrete, multi-sensory experiences

·  Use repetition, modelling, and intensive interaction to support understanding

·  Help maintain attention and engagement during short adult-led activities

·  Follow strategies outlined by the Occupational Therapist and Educational Psychologist

Social, Emotional, and Mental Health

·  Support emotional regulation, using co-regulation strategies

·  Provide a predictable routine and visual supports to reduce anxiety

·  Support emotional literacy development through naming and responding to feelings

Sensory and Physical

Assist with all mobility and physical needs, including:

·  Use of adapted seating and equipment

·  Positional support and transfers, with training from the OT/Physio team

·  Support safe eating and drinking in line with health care guidance

·  Support to develop independence with activities of daily living such as self-feeding

·  Monitor fluid intake and ensure the child receives at least 1L per day (as medically required)

Personal Care

·  Provide full support with personal care needs, including nappy changing and hygiene routines

·  Maintain dignity and respect throughout

Multi-Agency and Record Keeping

·  Work closely with external therapists (SALT, OT, Physio) and follow therapy plans

·  Keep accurate daily records of communication use, progress, and care needs

·  Participate in regular reviews and contribute to planning meetings

·  Work with the nursery SENCo to complete specific learning plans which adhere to the child’s EHCP, monitor and feedback on the child’s development.
