Gooseberry Bush Day Nursery is seeking a dedicated and organised Chef / Cook to join our friendly team. This is a fantastic opportunity to take full ownership of a nursery kitchen, creating nutritious, delicious meals that support children’s growth and development in a warm, nurturing environment.

In this role, you’ll be a key part of our setting—working independently in the kitchen while being fully supported by a collaborative and welcoming team. You’ll have the freedom to plan menus, manage your kitchen, and make a real impact on the daily experiences of our children.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take full responsibility for the day-to-day running of the nursery kitchen
  • Plan and prepare healthy, balanced meals and snacks in line with the Government’s Nurtition guidance
  • Create menus that are varied, engaging, and tailored to children’s needs
  • Cater for dietary requirements, allergies, and cultural preferences with care and attention
  • Manage food ordering, deliveries, and stock control, including weekly ordering and budget awareness
  • Ensure the kitchen meets all food hygiene and safety standards, following Safer Food Better Business guidance
  • Complete all required documentation, including daily temperature checks and food safety records
  • Maintain a clean, organised kitchen environment at all times
  • Build positive relationships with staff and children, communicating confidently about food and menus
  • Occasionally support the wider team with breaks or lunch cover where needed

  • Full of Part-time position (minimum commitment of 5 hours but can extend to 7)

Requirements

  • Previous experience in a kitchen, school, nursery, or care setting
  • Level 2 or 3 Food Hygiene Certificate (essential)
  • Strong understanding of food safety, allergies, and dietary requirements
  • Good organisational skills and ability to manage a kitchen independently
  • A genuine passion for cooking nutritious food for children

Successful candidates will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS check. It is an offence to apply for a role in regulated activity if you are barred from working with children.
