Career options after being a nursery nurse

There are many different career options for those who have worked as a Nursery Nurse in a childcare setting for a few years. Experience of working as a Nursery Nurse can provide opportunities for many different career moves, both in and out of the childcare sector.


The skills you will have used as a Nursery Nurse – caring, compassion, empathy and organisational skills will stand you in good stead for your future.

Career options after being a nursery nurse

If you want to stay in the childcare sector there are many options for furthering your career such as:

Senior Nursery Nurse

This is an obvious next step after being a Nursery Nurse. A Senior Nursery Nurse takes on more responsibilities such as leading a team. You’ll usually need a Level 3 in Childcare.  

Deputy Manager

A Deputy Manager assists the Manager in the day to day running of the nursery. You’ll take on more responsibilities and will need your Level 3 in Childcare.

Manager

To become a Manager of a Nursery, you’ll need at least a Level 3 in Childcare, but a Level 5 is helpful too.  You’ll lead the nursery on a day to day basis, including budgeting and recruitment.  

Private Nanny

Out of a nursery setting, you could use your childcare skills in a private nannying role, working for a family from their home. This provides a varied role with some housework duties too.

Teacher

You’ll need a degree to become a Teacher but this can be a highly rewarding next step in your career.

You can also use your skills in many different sectors:

Social worker

You’ll need a degree or postgraduate programme to become a Social Worker and you can specialise in working with children.

Administrative roles

There are may different administrative roles that you can do in and out of a childcare setting ranging from Finance admin to HR admin. You may not need extra qualifications to work in an administrative role.
